LISTEN TO THE SHADOWS by Joan Hall Hovey
Star Writer; $3.95 download $9.95 CD-ROM; ISBN 1-929034-96-2
Highly Recommended
Written with the finesse and grace of a master, Joan Hall Hovey's first novel, LISTEN To THE SHADOWS, is an engrossing tale of fear and danger certain to keep the reader awake, turning pages long after bed time, and listening carefully to everything around them. A man without a conscious stalks artist Katie Summers. She hasn't seen him, but she senses his presence. A tingling on the back of the neck, a flicker out of the corner of the eye, and an instinctual awareness of danger are her only warnings. Stood up by her date late one night, Katie leaves the restaurant alone to drive through a storm to her remote country home. She doesn't notice the headlights following her. But when she does glance in the rearview mirror, the sight of a dead man's sightless blue eyes staring back at her results in a nearly fatal accident. She doesn't know, as she lies unconscious and bleeding, with her car crushed by a telephone pole, that her stalker lurks close by, watching. After four days in a coma, Katie awakens in the hospital. There she meets Dr Johnathan Shea, a sexy, vibrant, man carrying a heavy load of guilt over the loss of a young patient. A romantic interest develops, spiced by fierce attraction, sexy intrigue and danger. But the question remains as to whether he will be enough to protect Katie from a madman.

"Eradicate that cockroach!" With these words, President Winfield shows his frustration after his FBI fails to kill or capture the Mudslinger, a.k.a. Jim Foster. Winfield applauds the hiring of Nils Van Oot, world's foremost bounty hunter, to finish Foster for a fee of fifty million dollars. When he learns the Russians have hired a rival assassination team as well, his spirits soar. Fugitive Foster, the most dangerous man alive, has few places left to run or hide. The nightmare will soon be over. But the hunted turns hunter.
When Dr. Gordon Whittier is kidnapped for bait, Jim sets out to rescue him against all odds. His powers are pitted against ruthless murderers, a brilliant computer hacker, the FBI's best and the clock in a race to save Whittier's life. All he has to work with is a trail of clues and his talents, but to succeed he must learn to use his force against theirs.
Will he learn this painful lesson in time? And will he be able to decode clues left by a genius? What in the world is the meaning of a flag flown backward? What's the significance of 300km3 15W? And where is 031245E?

Follow Ups Post Followup Author Discussion Forum FAQ Posted by Marion Rand on July 01, 2001 at 11:53:03: From my website: http://joanhallhovey.tripod.com/marionsjhhoveysite/ "The novelist is a shaman who is ... offering his experience for the use of the rest of the tribe." Russell Hoban Hi: I am an avid reader whose children have grown up. I have been an admirer of Ms. Hall Hovey for many years - since I picked up a copy of LISTEN TO THE SHADOWS when it was first published. Since that time I have followed Ms Hall Hovey's career with great interest, always delighted by her many articles and short stories, as well as by her books. My favourite book to date is NOWHERE TO HIDE, a compelling page-turner, in which I felt I came to know her characters intimately. I have managed also to see Ms. hall Hovey perfoming on stage in a couple of plays. It is my shared opinion that Hall is every bit as good an actor as she is writer.

There are certain thing's that one never knows which will come when your eyes close and sleep takes over, dreams or nightmares. For Ellen Harris, she'd had her share of nightmares in her lifetime. She had also had her share of heartbreak and anguish. As a child she had to deal with alcoholic and abusive parents while she tried to protect her younger sister Gail. When both of her parents were killed in an auto accident, her and Gail were separated for a short time when Gail was sent to an orphanage. When Ellen became old enough, she took Gail out of there and raised her. Once Gail went out on her own, Ellen went back to school and got her degree in psychology. Shortly after she met and married Ed and all of her dreams were coming true. But happiness sometimes comes with a price. First Ed died suddenly from 'Sudden Cardiac Arrest' with absolutely no warning, as he was only in his thirty's. Now three years later, her sister Gail is realizing her dreams of becoming a singer. Gail has signed a major contract and getting ready to go out on tour, but not before coming home for Christmas. But the night before Gail was suppose to arrive, Ellen's life is once again shattered when Gail is brutally raped, beaten and murdered. How much can one person endure? Ellen isn't sure how to handle everything, but suddenly things become crystal clear to her, she will either catch Gail's killer or die trying

Raised in an atmosphere of violence and unpredictability, Ellen and Gail Morgan have banded together, survivors of a booze-fertilized battleground, forming a fierce united front against an often cold and uncaring world. When
their parents are killed in a car crash, Ellen becomes the mother figure for Gail.
When fifteen years later Gail is brutally raped and murdered in her shabby New York basement apartment, practically on the eve of her big breakthrough as a singer, Ellen is inconsolable. Rage at her younger sister's murder has nearly consumed her. So when her work as a psychologist wins her an appearance on the evening news, Ellen seizes the moment. Staring straight into the camera, she challenges the killer to come out of hiding: "Why don't you come after me? I'll be waiting for you."
Phone calls flood the station, but all leads go nowhere. The police investigation seems doomed to failure. Then it happens: a note, written in red ink, slipped under the windshield wipers of her car, 'YOU'RE IT.' Ellen has stirred the monster in his lair . and the hunter has become the hunted!

Browseren understøtter ikke indbyggede rammer eller er aktuelt konfigureret til ikke at vise indbyggede rammer. Listen to the Shadows Nowhere to Hide by Joan Hall Hovey Interview By Pamela James Joan, how and when did you begin mystery writing? I began writing almost as soon as I could read, coming up with stories that no doubt were derived from fairy tales about princesses and frogs. Some were pretty gruesome as I remember. I was drawn to the dark side even then. I also liked to draw, and in first grade I recall showing my teacher one of my renderings – a snake crawling out of a bathtub and a man with a gun about to shoot it. Miss Vanwart’s exact words when she looked at it were: “I don’t know what’s going to become of you.” Growing up, I lived a great deal inside my head and in the pages of wonderful books. Mystery and suspense novels were my favorites. I was a big fan of writers like Shirley Jackson, Phyllis Whitney, Edgar Allan Poe. I loved reading about moors and spooky old houses, so not surprising that my writings would lean in the direction of thrillers. I loved gothic novels with their long secret passageways and attics, and I think the influence of gothics is reflected in my own novels.
