When artist Katie Summers emerged from a four-day coma, she remembered all too vividly the horror of that night the terrifying dead eyes that had stared back at her in the rear view mirror, causing her to crash the car. But nobody believed her. Even the enigmatic and disturbingly attractive psychiatrist, Dr. Jonathan Shea, implied that she had made the whole thing up. Or dreamed it. Released from the hospital, still weak from her ordeal, katie took a taxi to her remote farmhouse on Black Lake. Darkness had already fallen. There was only the wind in the trees to greet herand the cold and empty house. But the house was not quite empty. Something her upstairs in her bedroom. Something with cold, dead eyes...

Chapter One
NOWHERE TO HIDE
August 6, 1979
The closet door was at the top of the stairs at the end of the hall. To get to it he had to pass by two doors, one on either side, both now partly open. He could hear talking, very low. Farther away, the sound of running away. In three quick strides he was past the doors and inside the closet. He knew he was smiling. He felt excited the way he always did when he got past them. Even if anyone had got a glimpse of him, it wouldn't really matter. He was invisible. The invisible man. The secret door was to his right, just behind the wide rack of musty-smelling winter coats in varying sizes. He ducked beneath them, and opening the door, let himself into the narrow, cave-like space. The space separating the inside and outside walls went nearly the whole way round the third floor, stopping abruptly at the wall of the stairwell where he had to turn around and go back the way he had come. Once, this space had been used for storage - old bed springs, broken chairs, trunks - but the doors, except for the one in the closet which he had come upon quite by luck, and through which he had come again and again, had long since been replaced by sheetrock and papered over with rose-patterned wallpaper.

So when her work as a psychologist wins her an appearance on the evening news, Ellen seizes the moment. Staring straight into the camera, she challenges the killer to come out of hiding: "Why don't you come after me? I'll be waiting for you." Phone calls flood the station, but all leads go nowhere. The police investigation seems doomed to failure. Then it happens: a note, written in red ink, slipped under the windshield wipers of her car. 'YOU'RE IT.' Ellen has stirred the monster in his lair ... and the hunter has become the hunted. Publisher: Wings ePress, Inc

SAMPLE CHAPTER FROM "Nowhere to Hide"
By - Joan Hall Hovey http://www.joanhallhovey.com/
NOWHERE TO HIDE NOT ALONE It was nice to be alone. As she brushed her hair, Gail launched into her favorite fantasy buying her sister a white Ferrari. Ellens birthday was coming up in May; she'd have the car delivered right up to her door, a big red bow tied on the antenna ... dream on, girl she told herself, grinning at her reflection in the mirror. Tiger padded into the room just then, winding his sleek, warm body around her bare ankles, purring like an old washing machine. I owe her so much, Tiger, Gail said, reaching down to stroke the cat's soft, glossy fur. If it wasn't for... Suddenly, Tigers back arched under her hand and he hissed. Gail's heart leapt in her breast and her hand drew back as if burned. "What the...?" But Tiger, fur standing on end, had already fled the room. Gail turned in her chair just in time to see his electrified, retreating tail... Then she caught a movement from the corner of her eye. Turning, she froze at the sight of the closet door slowly opening. Chapter One August 6, 1979

Interview with
Joan Hall Hovey
Author of
Nowhere to Hide
Interview by LISA Lisa: Could you tell a little about yourself? How you first started writing and when your first "big" break was. Joan:I was born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada's oldest incorporated city, situated on the Bay of Fundy. I married my husand, Mel, when I was 18, and we had 3 children within four years. (our son, Bill, came along 18 years later.) When the children were still small, we moved from the city to Gondola Point, (it was country then, but no more) and have lived here quite contently for many years now with our poodle, Coco, and cat, Sasha, in a modest, but comfortable home, overlooking the Kennebecasis River. Lots of lovely tall pine trees as I look out my window. People often tell me the view must be inspiring, but the truth is when I'm at my computer, my back is to it. My head is already filled with characters and scenes; I'm living in a world of the imagination. My first story sold to True Confessions, more than 20 years ago. The second story, after being rejected numerous times, sold to Home Life magazine. It was titled God's Special Gift, and was about my grandmother, who was an artist. Her death, as a result of a house fire, when I was 15, was an enormous loss for me. And I think the story was my way of dealing with it. When my children grew less dependent on me, I decided to pursue my lifelong dream of writing a novel. Always an insatiable reader, with a vivid imagination and natural facility for writing, (so my teachers said) I immersed myself once more in the work of those writers who had instilled me with the desire to write Shirley Jackson, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Dickens, and contemporary authors like Ira Levin, Phyllis Whitney, Joy Fielding, Ruth Rendell, Stephen King, and so many more fine writers. At the same time I was making notes for my own novel. Listen to the Shadows sold first time out to Zebra Books. Not that they gave me a contract right away; they said it needed to be 100 pages longer. Back to the drawing board. In December 1991, the book was published. Nowhere to Hide came shortly on its heels.

Joan Hall Hovey writes a great thriller story. I was reading nervously from beginning to end, with goosebumps everywhere! Ellen Morgan is decorating her house for Christmas. Her sister, Gail, is coming home for a visit. She is a singer in New York. When Ellen went to meet Gail at the airport, she was instead met by her best friend Myra and an officer. He told her that her sister has been murdered. That started a chain reaction of murders and events. After going to New York to look for clues to Gail's murder, she talks to several people but comes up with nothing. She figures the police aren't doing enough, so she investigates further. After fruitless efforts, she goes back home to Maine. She goes on a television program and tells her story to everyone. The only person she was really directing it to was the killer. And he was listening! Soon, he goes after Ellen. He watched her for several days before he attacked. He waited until she wasn't home and snuck in the house and waited for her in the bedroom. She never knew until he came at her. At this point in the story, keep the lights on! It's too scary to read the rest in the dark or alone!

WRITING CHILL WATERS By joan hall hovey. An Interview With joan hallhovey 1. Your mystery/suspense novels have all been standalones.
http://www.mysteryplaceonline.com/JHHovey.html
WRITING CHILL WATERS By Joan Hall Hovey According to author Willa Cather, "Most of the basic material a writer works with is acquired before the age of fifteen." I believe thatís true. Writers do tend to write again and again about certain subjects, regardless of the genre theyíre working in. My own books deal with betrayal and loss. Although I didnít realize this until I was in the middle of writing Chill Waters , my third suspense novel. Emotional abandonment seems to be an issue I feel compelled to revisit in my writing. I think all good books canít help but tell you something about their author.
In Chill Waters , following the breakup of her marriage after learning of her husbandís infidelity, 45 year old Rachael Warren retreats to the old beachhouse in Jenny's Cove, where as a young girl she lived with her grandmother. It is the one place where she had always felt safe and loved. But she is about to learn that ëa safe placeí is mostly an illusion. And that evil can find us no matter where we go. When I sat down to write Chill Waters , I had already thought about my story for a long time. Now I needed a title to hang it on. Some writers can write an entire novel without a title; Iím not one of them. Iíd abandoned a dozen possibilities, before I came up with
