Notes on the on-line text: "A Shropshire Lad" was originally published in 1896. Some changes from that edition:
  • The initial word in each poem is not in all-caps in this edition.
  • There are no page breaks (or page numbers) in this edition.
  • In poem V, the 1908 edition's "what it is" has been changed to "what is it" (which I believe to be correct).
  • In poems XXIII and elsewhere, lines in the poem appear without breaks (since the margins here are wider than in the print edition)
  • In poem XXXIV, the italics in the first three lines could not be reproduced in ASCII. Instead, they are here denoted by single quotes.
  • The design of the 1908 edition obscures the indenting of the initial lines of some poems. I have tried to restore it by looking at other editions.
  • The first four lines of poem L were in small-font italics in the 1908 edition. Here they are surrounded by asterisks instead.
Some editions place quotations in single quotes. The 1908 edition, and this on-line edition, use double quotes (") for quotations. Footnotes are designated by [1] and placed at the end of the poem.

A(lfred) E(dward) Housman
Born 26th. March, 1859, in Fockbury, Worcestershire, England; died 30th. April, 1936, in Cambridge, England.
British poet. His father was a country solicitor who took to drink. His mother died when he was twelve. His brother Laurence was also gay, and his sister was a lesbian. A. E. Housman went to Bromsgrove School where he won prizes for his poetry. He won an open scholarship to St John's College, Oxford in 1877. At Oxford he developed a 'passionate attachment' to a fellow student, Moses Jackson with whom he shared rooms, but who did not reciprocate his feelings. A. E. Housman's realisation of his own homosexuality may have distracted him from his studies. He was also worried about his father's illness and bankruptcy. He was also stubbornly concentrating on his classical studies at the expense of his other subjects. The combination of circumstances may explain why he failed the finals of his degree in 1881. He obtained a pass degree the following year. He is said to have told Moses Jackson that he was the reason why he wrote poetry and was the subject of many poems.
