Born 26th. March, 1859, in Fockbury, Worcestershire, England; died 30th. April, 1936, in Cambridge, England.
British poet. His father was a country solicitor who took to drink. His mother died when he was twelve. His brother Laurence was also gay, and his sister was a lesbian. A. E. Housman went to Bromsgrove School where he won prizes for his poetry. He won an open scholarship to St John's College, Oxford in 1877. At Oxford he developed a 'passionate attachment' to a fellow student, Moses Jackson with whom he shared rooms, but who did not reciprocate his feelings. A. E. Housman's realisation of his own homosexuality may have distracted him from his studies. He was also worried about his father's illness and bankruptcy. He was also stubbornly concentrating on his classical studies at the expense of his other subjects. The combination of circumstances may explain why he failed the finals of his degree in 1881. He obtained a pass degree the following year. He is said to have told Moses Jackson that he was the reason why he wrote poetry and was the subject of many poems.

    A.E. Housman
    Profile
Alfred Edward Housman, classical scholar and poet; was born at Valley House, Fockbury near Bromsgrove in Worcestershire. His father was a solicitor and one of his younger brothers was the novelist and dramatist Laurence Housman . Alfred was educated at King Edward's School, Bromsgrove and St. John's College, Oxford where, to his shame and humiliation, he failed his final examinations. From 1882 to 1892 he worked at the Patent Office in London and, in his spare time, devoted himself to classical studies and to thereby establish himself as a scholar to regain his pride. lie was also writing some poetry during this period but it was his brilliant articles on the classics in scholarly journals which gained him a high reputation and led to his appointment as Professor of Latin at University College, London in 1892. He remained there until 1911 and became a respected and renowned scholar. An apparently rather dry and austere man (at least to those who did not know him well), he astounded his students and colleagues by the publication of his first collection of poems A Shropshire Lad (1896), astounded them because of the contrast between the romanticism of the poems and the outward severity of the man they knew as their Professor of Latin.

Of all writers, Housman's name is the most closely associated with South Shropshire, and in particular with the Clun Valley and Ludlow. He was professor of Latin at Trinity College Cambridge, but grew up in urban Bromsgrove. Nearby, but worlds apart from the life of rural Shropshire which he idealised. Shropshire was the western horizon of his childhood, the 'Blue Remembered Hills', and he was inspired by the beauty of the landscape throughout his life. His best known work is the poem A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. Romantically pessimistic, it was not a success at first but gradually gained admirers during the years leading up to the first world war. Many of the poems were set to music by Vaughan-Williams and other composers of the time, bringing his works to a larger, international audience. The Housman Society was founded to foster interest in the poetry of Housman. They can be contacted at

And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide. Now, of my threescore years and ten,
