86. Memories Of Forty-Eight Years Service
A personal account of service during the Zulu War, the Boer War and World War One, written by General Sir horace SmithDorrien.
http://www.richthofen.com/smith-dorrien/
MEMORIES OF FORTY-EIGHT YEARS SERVICE
GENERAL HORACE SMITH-DORRIEN
British General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien is famous for his part in two famous events; the Battle of Isandhlwana in 1879, and the Battle of Le Cateau in 1914. At Isandhlwana, he was one of only five soldiers to survive the Zulu Army's envelopment of an invading column of British troops. At Le Cateau, he successfully guided the Second Corps of the British Expeditionary Force in France through one of the most difficult operations possible, that of a fighting withdrawal.
In 1915, as the vicious trench fighting of the western front heated up, he was one of the first senior Allied officers to request a change of methods in order to reduce the appalling casualties already being suffered. Instead of being encouraged in his efforts, he was removed from command by his less than imaginative superior, Sir John French. It will never be known how differently the war in the trenches might have developed had Smith-Dorrien remained on the scene. But the loss of such a capable commander of long experience most likely caused more hardship than otherwise might have occurred.
The excerpts below are from Smith-Dorrien's 1925 book Memories of Forty-Eight Years Service . This 500 page memoir begins with his service as a young man in Africa during the Zulu War, moves on to Egypt, India, Malta, further African service during the Boer War, and finally his famous tour of duty in Belgium and France during World War One. Note that due to its great length and the wide variety of subjects, select chapters will be presented in regular installments.

Quintus Horatius Flaccus was born 8 December 65BC in Venusia, a Roman military colony in southeastern Italy on the border between Apulia and Lucania (Vita). His full name is attested in his poetry and an inscription on the "Carmen Saeculare," a poem commissioned by Augustus for performance at the Secular games of 17BC: (1) Quintus (S.2.6:37), Horatius (C.4.6:44; E.1.14:5), Flaccus (I.15:12, S.2.1:18); (2) carmen composuit Q. Hor[at]ius Flaccus ("Q. Horatius Flaccus wrote the poem" [Carmen Saeculare] ILS 5050). His father was a manumitted slave (S.1.6:6 and 45-46) who worked as a coactor argentarius, or auction broker (S.i.6:86-87), and acquired a small holding (S.1.6:71) which Horace with disingenuous humility calls a "starveling farm." Horace says nothing about his mother, but does mention the name of his nurse, Pullia (C.3.4:10). His father had in fact enough money to take Horace while still young out of the local Venusian school run by Flavius and personally supervise his education at Rome under the strict disciplinarian Orbilius (S.1.6:71-88). Horace notes in the same passage (ll. 78-80), and in contradiction to S.1.6:71, that his clothing and attendant slaves suggested the son of a man with great ancestral wealth (rather than the acquired wealth his father had earned). During his secondary schooling in these Roman years, Horace studied the poetry of Livius Andronicus (E.2.1:69-71) and Homer (E.2.2:41-42).

[Back to People With a Story
Suetonius (?): The Life of Horace
This Life, is published with the lives of other poet, but is not directly attributed to Suetonius. [Loeb Translation, 1913]
QUINTUS HORATIUS FLACCUS of Venusia had for a father, as he himself writes, a freedman who was a collector of money at auctions; but it is believed that he was a dealer in salted provisions, for a certain man in a quarrel thus taunted Horace: " How often have I seen your father wiping his nose with his arm !" Horace served as tribune of the soldiers in the war of Philippi, at the instance of Marcus Brutus, one of the leaders in that war. When his party was vanquished, he was pardoned and purchased the position of a quaestor's clerk. Then contriving to win the favour, first of Maecenas and later of Augustus, he held a prominent place among the friends of both. How fond Maecenas was of him is evident enough from the well known epigram: If that I do not love you, my own Horace, more than life itself, behold your comrade leaner than Ninnius. " Seeing that single-handed thou dost bear the burden of tasks so many and so great, protecting Italy's realm with arms, providing it with morals, reforming it by laws, I should sin against the public weal, Caesar, if I wasted thy time with long discourse."

Horace Lamb 's father, John Lamb, was the foreman of a cotton mill who had become well known for his improvements to spinning machines. However, John Lamb died when Horace was young and after his mother remarried, Horace went to live with Mrs Holland who was his mother's sister. She was kindly lady but nevertheless brought Horace up in a severe Puritan manner. Horace was educated at the Grammar School in Stockport. In 1866, when Horace was only 17, he won a scholarship to read classics at Queen's College, Cambridge but declined the scholarship to spend a year studying at Owens College, Manchester. It was at Owens College that Lamb's interests turned firmly towards mathematics so that, when he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, the following year it was to study mathematics. Lamb was taught by Stokes and Maxwell at Cambridge and graduated as Second Wrangler in 1872 (meaning that he was second in the ranked list of those students awarded a First Class degree). The same year he was awarded a Smith's Prize and he was elected a Fellow and Lecturer at Trinity College.

The artist was born in Paris, in the galleries of the Louvre on 30th June, 1789 where his parents were lodging during the occupation of the palace in the revolution. He attained early distinction and quickly developed a disdain for the classical school of David. He set about therefore to develop his own style and his taste led him to military subjects. Taking nature as his guide, Vernet depicted the French soldier as he really was rather than in an idealised fashion. His pictures Dog of the Regiment, Trumpeter's Horse and Death of Poniatowski along with similar compositions gave him universal popularity.

Texas Recognized School Welcome to Horace Mann Junior School Pride and tradition are trademarks of Horace Mann Junior School. Established in 1927, Horace Mann has educated junior school students in Baytown for over 70 years. The original building, located on Pruett Street, served students until the 1993-94 school year when the current state-of-the-art facility was opened on the outskirts of Baytown at 310 South Highway 146. Many positive changes have taken place in the eight years since the move to the "new" Horace Mann. However, citizens of Baytown can be assured that one thing has not changed - - the high quality of education that has become the tradition of Horace Mann. Our mission and goals… Horace Mann Junior School is committed to providing a safe educational environment that will meet the needs of all students. Every student will have the opportunities to meet the challenge, achieve success, and prepare for responsible citizenship. We strive for the following:
