Gerard Manley Hopkins 1844-1889
Gerard Hopkins was the eldest of nine children in a High Anglican family. He won a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford in 1863 receiving a first in both Classics and Greats. He thought about becoming a painter-poet like D. G. Rossetti, being strongly influenced by the aesthetic theories of Pater and John Ruskin and the poems of George Herbert and Christina Rossetti. However during his undergraduate years at Oxford he was deeply involved in an exploration of Catholicism, guided by John Henry Newman who had converted in 1845, and was received into the Catholic Church in 1866. Hopkins became a Jesuit (to the consternation of his parents) in 1868 and, feeling that poetry was an indulgence a priest ought not to allow himself, he burned the poems he had written up to that point. It was not until four years later, after studying the writings of Duns Scotus a medieval thinker, that he began writing again. A period of time spent in Wales in 1874 studying theology allowed him to learn Welsh which later became an important influence on his poems. The "sprung rhythm" that he invented was adapted from the rhythms of Welsh poetry. Many of his poetic inventions were considered too radical to be printed and with a few exceptions his poems were not published in his lifetime. Serving variously as a preacher, parish priest, and professor of Greek and Latin, Hopkins always considered poetry as coming second to his other duties. Consequently his output is small, especially in comparison to his contemporaries Tennyson and Browning.

Hopkins, Gerard Manley
English poet, whose work expresses an intense response to the natural world, and whose innovations in technique produced an intricately woven tapestry of language that embodied this response.
In 1877 Hopkins was ordained in the Jesuit order and served as a parish priest and teacher in England and Scotland before becoming a professor of Greek at University College, Dublin, Ireland, in 1884. His unhappy years in Ireland, shadowed by overwork and ill health, produced a series of poems known as the "terrible sonnets," the first of which was "Carrion Comfort" (1885?). They reflect the conflict between his religious vocation and his attraction to the world of the senses.
With a few exceptions, Hopkins's poems were not published during his lifetime; they were read only by friends and fellow poets. After his death his friend the poet laureate Robert Bridges anthologized a selection of Hopkins's work. The first collected edition was published in 1918; a second, complete, edition appeared in 1930, whereupon his work received due recognition and established its influence on 20th-century English poe try.

Inversnaid
      T HIS darksome burn, horseback brown,
      His rollrock highroad roaring down,
      In coop and in comb the fleece of his foam
      Flutes and low to the lake falls home.
      A windpuff-bonnet of fawn-froth
      Turns and twindles over the broth
      Of a pool so pitchblack, fell-frowning,
      It rounds and rounds Despair to drowning.
      Degged with dew, dappled with dew,
      Are the groins of the braes that the brook treads through,
      Wiry heathpacks, flitches of fern,
      And the beadbonny ash that sits over the burn.
      What would the world be, once bereft
      Of wet and wildness? Let them be left,
      O let them be left, wildness and wet;
      Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet.

      G LORY be to God for dappled things,
      For skies of couple-color as a brinded cow,
      For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
      Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls, finches' wings;
      Landscape plotted and pieced, fold, fallow and plough,
      And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.
      All things counter, original, spare, strange,
      Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)

Hywel Lloyd Web Wizard
A Victorian Jesuit Poet
28th July 1844 - June 8th 1889
Born eldest of 9 children, schooling Highgate, 1863, scholarship Balliol College Oxford, and was converted to Catholicism by John Henry Newman in 1866. In 1867 he was awarded First Class degrees in Classics and Greats (a rare double first). He became a Jesuit and burnt all his early poems as he felt that the practice of poetry was too self-indulgent. He began writing poems again after studying the writings of Duns Scotus, a medieval Catholic thinker. In 1874 he studied theology in North Wales and learnt Welsh. He was ordained and served as a preacher or assistant to the parish priest in Sheffield, Oxford and London. He was parish priest in Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow and after three months of spiritual study in London he taught classics at Stoneyhurst College, Lancashire. In 1884 he went to University College Dublin as Professor of Greek and Latin. He became very depressed partly because of his work load of exam marking and more importantly his belief that his prayers no longer reached God. Many of his best and most mature poems were written while he was in Ireland, for example "On the Portrait of Two Beautiful Young People" is about people from Monasterevin.

Gerard Manley Hopkins Naufrage du Deutschland "I am like a slip of comet"
    - I am like a slip of comet,
    Scarce worth discovery, in some corner seen
    Bridging the slender difference of two stars,
    Come out of space, or suddenly engender'd
    By heady elements, for no man knows ;
    But when she sights the sun she grows and sizes
    And spins her skirts out, while her central star
    Shakes its cocooning mists ; and so she comes
    To fields of light ; millions of travelling rays
    Pierce her ; she hangs upon the flame-cased sun,
    And sucks the light as full as Gideons's fleece : But then her tether calls her ; she falls off, And as she dwindles shreds her smock of gold Between the sistering planets, till she comes To single Saturn, last and solitary ; And then she goes out into the cavernous dark. So I go out : my little sweet is done : I have drawn heat from this contagious sun : To not ungentle death now forth I run. Gerard Manley Hopkins

As I look back over my research, the landscape is dominated by Hopkins. In a review of Michael Allsopp and David Downes, Eds.
