Genre - Epic
Literary works are divided into various categories called genres in accordance with their characteristic form and content. The Iliad belongs to the genre of epic. An epic is a long poem which tells a story involving gods, heroes and heroic exploits. Since the epic is by its very nature lengthy, it tends to be rather loosely organized. Not every episode is absolutely necessary to the main story and digressions are not uncommon. You will notice how different in this regard is the genre of drama, in which every episode tends to be essential to the plot and digressions are inappropriate. The events narrated in epic are drawn from legend rather than invented by the poet and are typically of great significance as in the case of the Iliad , which relates an important incident centering around the greatest hero of the Greeks in the Trojan War, the most celebrated war of Greek legend (see Troy for more information on the Trojan War). The epic poet tends to present his narrative impersonally, not drawing attention to himself except occasionally, as in the first line of the

It happens John to live also in Ohio, and that was not a problem to visit him and after so many years I saw again Wutas to do what they know the best, from any other birds even Hawks to dive! John's birds when up, and he let them go out of site, and then put out the droppers, and from the clouds the Wutas where coming down so fast, they were living a long trail of a father dust, like a diving jet plane . I estimate the speed 180 to 200 hundred miles an hour! John Liagris import those birds from Greece, and did so, that more than a dozen times since then. Also, John helped a dozen or more pigeon flyers with Wutas in the US. and still does, he sent me some real good looking birds, and also some direct from Greece.I also bought some few birds from Paul Maywald, which have start Wutas from John Liagris also Now days, John, have two loft's one Wutas, and the other import Donecks from Greece.

The Homeric Hymns

Homer was the major figure of ancient Greek literature and the author of the earliest and finest epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey . Tradition has it that he lived in the 12th century B.C., around the time of the Trojan War, in an Ionic settlement, either Chios or Smyrna, where he made his living as a court singer and storyteller. But modern archaeological research has uncovered artifacts similar to those described in the poems, providing evidence that Homer wrote at a later date. Most scholars now suppose that Homer was Ionian of the 8th or 9th century BC. Homer writes nothing of himself in his poems, but similes in the Iliad and the Odyssey frequently make reference to the humble lives of farmers and artisans, so it is sometimes conjectured that Homer was of this class.
Both epics deal with legendary events that were believed to have occurred many centuries before their composition. The

HOMER WAS NOT A PERSON: HE WAS AN AGE AND A PEOPLE, AND THE LITERATURE THEY PRODUCED

HOMERIC TROY AND HOMERIC ITHAKA
All the descriptions of Ilios and its environs contained in the Iliad , like all the descriptions of Ithaka and its environs contained in the Odyssey , reflect geographical and archaeological realities to be found along the length of Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, where the town of Gabela on the right bank of the Neretva River corresponds with the celebrated Ilios of the Iliad , and the ruins of Donja Vrucica situated at the far end of the Peljesac Peninsula with the Ithaka of the Odyssey THE TROY KNOWN TO THE GREEKS That the Greeks identified Troy with Hissarlik at the southern entrance to the Dardanelles, and Ithaka with an island by the same name at the mouth of the Gulf of Patras has nothing to do with what the Iliad and the Odyssey have to say about these places, for these identifications were not made until some four centuries after the fact, once Homer had appeared suddenly on the Greek literary scene.

137. A Sea Change: The Life And Art Of Winslow Homer
Short article from Smithsonian Magazine.
http://smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues95/oct95/homer.html
document.write(''); Winslow Homer, the quintessential American artist By the time he was in his mid-40s, a decade after the end of the Civil War, Winslow Homer was already successful as a painter. His reputation had been firmly established with masterpieces such as Prisoners from the Front (1866), hailed by the New York Evening Post as "a complete summation of the most vital facts of the Civil War," and The Carnival (1877), one of a series in which he documented the lives of the newly freed blacks in Petersburg, Virginia. Yet, from the late 1870s on, Winslow Homer seemed to change in a fundamental way. Some scholars speculate that there was a failed romance that caused his withdrawal from society. In any case, this great painter of the American scene did not lose the edge when it came to the probity and drama of his art. Eventually moving to the coast of Maine, he limited his socializing to occasional trips to town to pick up his mail. In works such as Fox Hunt (1893) and Right and Left (1909), Homer dealt with profound issues of existence, while in his paintings of the pounding surf of the Maine coast he brought nature to center stage. Now, these works and other masterpieces by Winslow Homer are included in a major retrospective that opens at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., on October 15, where it will continue until January 28, 1996. It will then travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (February 21 to May 26, 1996), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (June 20 to September 22, 1996).
