We invite you to browse through the Village of Homer, New York. Our unique character comes from our small-town, rural atmosphere, our broad, charming tree-lined streets, a rich and varied collection of eighteenth and nineteenth century homes and commercial buildings, and the Victorian business district. Our picturesque village green and its gazebo serve as the hub for many of the cultural, educational, and religious affairs of the village.

word for word (over 25,000 lines of poetry); it may be possible that the Homeric poems were memorized with more exactitude than scholars believe. No matter what the case, by the end of the Greek Dark Ages, these bards or story-tellers were probably the cultural center of Greek society; their status improved greatly as Greeks began to slowly urbanize.
Homer , and that he sung ten epic poems about the Trojan War, of which only two survived (although the Greeks seem to have known them). As a group these poems told the entire history of the Trojan War; each poem, however, only covered a small part of that history. Many classicists believe that the two surviving Homeric epics (probably the only Homeric epics) were in fact composed by several individuals; in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, most classicists accept the overall Greek idea of a single author. Whatever the compositional history of the poems, they were set down into writing within a few decades of their composition; the growing urbanization of Greek society led to the rediscovery of writing (learned from the Phoenicians this time), and the Homeric poems were committed to writing very quickly. Time and transmission added much extraneous material to the poems, but in their basic character and outline they seem to be the original compositions.
Iliad is the story of a brief event in the ninth year of the war (which the Greeks claim lasted ten years); the great hero

Her catalogue is a landmark in Homer studies. It puts Homer in his true relationship to illustration, to other American art and to the European and English examples he followed, from Ruskin to Millet ; its vivacity of argument matches that of the paintings. Cooper has brought together some two hundred watercolors-almost a third of Homer's known output. It is a wholly delectable show, and it makes clear why watercolor, in its special freshness and immediacy, gave Homer access to moments of vision he did not have in the weightier, slower diction of oils. "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors," Homer once remarked, and he was almost right. He came to the medium late: he was thirty-seven and a mature artist. A distinct air of the Salon, of the desire for a "major" utterance that leads to an overworked surface, clings to some of the early watercolors-in particular, the paintings of

Homer Tonight!
"Homer Tonight!" is a one-man show in the manner of the ancient Greek rhapsodists. I recite Book I of Homer's Iliad, with or without slides accompanying the show. This "act" is appropriate for Greek festivals, arts festivals, schools, and colleges. To learn more about the show, the "rhapsodist," and Homer's Iliad, continue down the page. What's your Homer essay about?
The Trojan War
According to Greek myth, one day when the gods were gathered on Olympos, "Discord," who had not been invited, came long and threw among them a golden apple inscribed "To the fairest." The goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite argued about who should receive the prize, but since no god was stupid enough to allow himself to get drafted as a judge in this divine beauty contest, the goddesses turned to a mortal (poor wretch), Paris, a prince of Troy.
Paris's qualifications for the job are irrelevant, since all three goddesses planned to bribe the judge anyway. Offering Paris the most beautiful human woman, Aphrodite succeeded in buying Paris's vote. However, that woman, Helen, already had a husband (worse luck). So the Trojans went to visit Helen and her husband, Menelaos, at their home in Sparta, and at the end of the visit, Paris took Helen back to Troy with him.

Welcome to
The Village of Homer Glen
The Village of Homer Glen is located just 11 miles southwest of Chicago in Will County, Illinois. The Village was incorporated in 2001, and soon afterward volunteers crafted the Village’s first mission statement: “The Village of Homer Glen is committed to preserving, protecting, and enhancing our community’s quality of life through responsible residential and economic development while utilizing sound fiscal management. We will strive to maintain open space, preserve our unique rural character, and safeguard our natural resources. The Village encourages community involvement in order to maintain and cultivate a balance of family, agriculture, business, environment, and cultural diversity for present and future generations.” At 22 square miles, Homer Glen is Will County’s third largest municipality. The current estimated population is 22,269, with continuing steady growth. The recent NIPC 2030 forecast projects a population of 40,588, which is a 54% increase. Housing construction continues to boom as carefully reviewed subdivisions are approved. The Village is bisected by three major creeks that are home to a multitude of wildlife such as beavers, coyotes, deer, and woodchucks. The gently rolling terrain is dotted with prairie grasses, stands of trees, and cultivated fields. Two 18-hole golf courses help the Village attain its rolling vista. A sizeable number of residents have horses on their property.

Frustrated because you have to read the Iliad or the Odyssey and are having trouble understanding them? Have to write a paper and wish there were easier ways to gather your information? Tired of Cliff notes (tm)? This page was designed to make the information given by Homer easier to access. It gives background about the factual information about the start of the Trojan war , as well as the mythos behind it. You can also access what life was like for the Greeks and the Trojans of the time. To understand how the Greeks thought and why Homer wrote what he did, there is also the section on Greek mythology. Here, a Deity family tree is given. Also synopses of the individual deities nentioned in the lliad and Odyssey. Of course, the most important section deals with the poems themselves. There is a character breakdown which detais who everyone is and what type of person they are, plot summary, and possible themes for both poems. *Cliff notes (tm) are a registered trademark of Cliffs Notes inc.
