    The Rampage by Miroslav Holub
    The last time
    there was a genuine rampage,
    herds stampeding
    with the zest of hurricanes,
with the pulsations of a storm,
and the force of destiny, when the roar went up
    against the villous ceiling,
    when the stronger ones
    pushed forward to the cruel
thunder of whips while the zombies
fell back into permanent darkness, the last time the cavalry charged across the whole width of the enemy line into the gap between life and death, and not even one single droplet of misery dripped, the last time something really won and the rest turned into compost that was when the sperm made the journey up the oviduct. This was 'to be or no to be'. Since that time we've been tottering round with the embarrassment of softening skeletons, with the wistful caution of mountain gorillas in the rain; we keep hoping for the time-lapse soul, secreting marital problems and a stationary home metaphysics against which the adenosine triphosphate of every fucked-up cell is like the explosion of a star in a chicken coop.

Writing Samples The Prague Post January 10, 1996 The Man Who Won't Be Pigeon-Holed Profile of Poet Miroslav Holub by Rachel Sarah "There is poetry in everything. That is the biggest argument against poetry."
    - Miroslav Holub, "The Root of the Matter" For Miroslav Holub, a typical day begins with editing the literary magazine Nova pritomnost (New Present) at his office next door to the literary hangout Viola Cafe. Next, Holub hops on the metro where, scrunched between passengers, the compact, gray-haired, fast-talking 72-year-old might find a moment to scribble down a line of poetry. Nowadays, this is where he finds the time to write. Arriving at the Microbiological Institute of the Czech Academy of Science, Holub then sits down to dwell over another matter: his nude mice. About six years ago, Holub was observing the little rodents in the sex act. Today he's trying "to figure out what happens to them when they're cold" by measuring the skin temperature and observing the immunological systems of specially bred hairless mice. Although Holub has split his days between poetry and science throughout his career, he isn't just another lab man who dabbles in the arts. Both his scientific papers and his poems have earned him recognition locally and abroad. Just how does he manage to do it all?
