We know the creatures are dead, we know the creatures are sliced, we know they're splayed on the pathologist's slides. Are they microbes? Are they "bits of animals"? Are they cancer cells? No one asks "whether these creatures wouldn't have preferred" to live "their disgusting life / in bogs / and canals" or to eat one another. No one asks any questions, "because it's all quite useless . . . like everything else in this world," a world in which the poet meets "a lonely girl," a general, a rat, even "my own self at every step." Commentary Holub is one of the fine Czech poets of the 20th century and also a practicing scientist and clinical pathologist. His poems are generally spare, free-form, and anti-literary. MIROSLAV HOLUB Alkotó írás Az írás mestersége talán az utolsó a hivatások közül, amit csak úgy magunktól fejleszthetünk ki. Elméletileg lehetséges, hogy az ember kiáll a porondra, kikiáltja, hogy író vagyok, és kész. Ahogy Karel C¡apek mondta, a legderekabb emberrel is megeshet, hogy író lesz belõle. Különösen az olyan országokban van ez így, ahol az emberek lehengerlõ rögtönzõkészséggel vannak megáldva, de az az ösztönük, hogy tökéletes és mindenestül befejezett teljesítményt mutassanak fel, már csökevényesebb. Más országokban, ahol fordított a helyzet, lépten-nyomon és egyre sûrûbben módszerek és megoldások alakulnak ki, hogy foglalkozássá változtassák az írást, s ezzel közös nevezõre hozzák más humán szakokkal és tudományokkal. Az ilyen törekvések bölcsõje az Egyesült Államok. De a jelenség már Európa több országában is felütötte fejét. Az Egyesült Államokban az a szabály, hogy ami sikeresen, pontosabban gazdaságilag sikeresen megszervezhetõ, azt hamarosan meg is szervezik. Ez az írók magzati fejlõdésére is érvényes, mely Vergilius, Dante, de még Whitman óta is éppolyan természetes és önkényes folyamat, mint ahogy az ebihalból béka lesz. Az írásmesterségbõl egyetemi szak lett. Tanulmányi szak, mint a mineralógia, biokémia vagy a középkori történelem. Nálunk az ilyen szakot úgy neveznék el, hogy teszem azt: kezdõ írók képzése. Az Egyesült Államokban az alkotó írás elnevezés honosodott meg; az amerikai angol nyelvben az alkotó szó nem olyan kínosan fellengzõs, mint a csehben.

The Death of Miroslav Holub by Howard A. Landman It must have been evening: the sky, already flat and lifeless, blanketing the day's fumbles and missteps in welcome obscurity. Yet in that burgeoning darkness, one light shone bright, a naked bulb piercing the attic window, engraving your room on the retinas of night. A chair. A typewriter. What will become of them now? Who loves the scalpel that has fallen from the surgeon's hand? Who mourns the microtome, when the last specimen has been fixed and sectioned? Silence swallows them, now that you are gone. Where once grew flowers of vision - stamen! sepal! - flows now the smooth concrete of a road going nowhere. Nowhere. Into the sea. Nowhere. Off a cliff. It must have been evening. The sky, pressing skyscrapers down like grass, and the caryatids complaining, because they know that tonight, with you gone, they each have a bit more weight to carry. July 29, 1999 Miroslav Holub was one of my favorite modern poets. He died in 1998 but I didn't find out until a year later. You can see one of his poems here.
