HOLMES, OLIVER WENDELL, JR.
, associate justice, U.S. Supreme Court. Holmes was the son of an important Boston family. Through his father, a distinguished doctor and writer-poet, he was brought into contact with leading New England thinkers, drawing from them not only ideas but also the desire to achieve great things intellectually. Holmes graduated from Harvard College in 1861, but the most formative influence on his life was his service in the Civil War. He was seriously wounded three times, experiences that led him to develop a harsh, unsentimental view of life as endless conflict, with an individual's destiny in the hands of an almost whimsical Fate. After graduating in 1866 from the Harvard Law School (which he found a notably uninspiring institution), Holmes briefly practiced law and then devoted the next decade to the preparation of lectures on the history and structure of the common law. These lectures, published as The Common Law in 1881, brought him lasting fame. He emphasized both that the "life of the law has not been logic: it has been experience" and that the law develops according to the "felt necessities of the time" rather than according to any set of deductive premises.

, physician and author. Known for his witty essays, poems, and novels, Holmes wrote the poem "Old Ironsides" in protest of the navy's plan to scrap the Constitution , which helped save the ship. In 1857 his column "The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table," which appeared in the Atlantic Monthly , made him famous. As a physician and professor at Harvard Medical School from 1847 until 1883, he wrote influential articles on medical subjects. His most important article, "The Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever" , urging cleanliness during childbirth, saved many lives.

48. HOLMES' 1884 MEMORIAL DAY SPEECH
oliver wendell holmes, Jr. In Our Youth Our Hearts Were TouchedWith Fire . An address delivered for Memorial Day, May 30, 1884
http://www.people.virginia.edu/~mmd5f/memorial.htm
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. "In Our Youth Our Hearts Were Touched With Fire" [An address delivered for Memorial Day, May 30, 1884, at Keene, NH, before John Sedgwick Post No. 4, Grand Army of the Republic.] Not long ago I heard a young man ask why people still kept up Memorial Day, and it set me thinking of the answer. Not the answer that you and I should give to each other-not the expression of those feelings that, so long as you live, will make this day sacred to memories of love and grief and heroic youthbut an answer which should command the assent of those who do not share our memories, and in which we of the North and our brethren of the South could join in perfect accord. But Memorial Day may and ought to have a meaning also for those who do not share our memories. When men have instinctively agreed to celebrate an anniversary, it will be found that there is some thought of feeling behind it which is too large to be dependent upon associations alone. The Fourth of July, for instance, has still its serious aspect, although we no longer should think of rejoicing like children that we have escaped from an outgrown control, although we have achieved not only our national but our moral independence and know it far too profoundly to make a talk about it, and although an Englishman can join in the celebration without a scruple. For, stripped of the temporary associations which gives rise to it, it is now the moment when by common consent we pause to become conscious of our national life and to rejoice in it, to recall what our country has done for each of us, and to ask ourselves what we can do for the country in return.

By Oliver Wendell Holmes September 16, 1830 Ay, tear her tattered ensign down! Long has it waved on high, And many an eye has danced to see That banner in the sky; Beneath it rung the battle shout, And burst the cannon's roar; The meteor of the ocean air Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck, once red with heroes' blood, Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o'er the flood, And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee; The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! Oh, better that her shattered bulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every threadbare sail, And give her to the god of storms, The lightning and the gale!

Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought."
