What is American About American Poetry?
Anselm Hollo
Are there essential ways in which you consider yourself an American poet? Having lived most of my adult life in the US of A, as a participant in an active community of [US]American poets, I have to say yes. But I prefer "american" (lower case). When you consider your own "tradition," do you think primarily of American poets? No, I don't. My conscious lineage includes Hipponax, Sappho, Arnaut Daniel, Walther von der Vogelweide, Francois Villon, Heinrich Heine, Guillaume Apollinaire, Pierre Reverdy, Bertolt Brecht, numerous other twentieth-century European as well as [US]American and other Western Hemisphere poets. Do you believe there is anything specifically American about past and contemporary American poetry? Is there American poetry in the sense that there is said to be American painting or American film? Do you wish to distinguish American poetry from British or other English language poetry? Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe, and Walt Whitman could not have written their works anywhere but in the [US]America of their day. Among contemporaries, the same applies to those in the Pound-Stein-WCWilliams-Loy-Zukofsky lineage.

One Death to Die: A Kayankaya Mystery

Proving that the classic Hammet/Chandler private eye plot can be enriched in even the most exotic setting, Arjouni continues his pungent series about the Turkish-German detective Kemal Kayankaya. Like his creator, Kayankaya is the son of Turkish guest workers, and he gets very little respect from his adopted country. A client, an "average schmuck from Frankfurt's West End" named Weidenbusch, wants Kayankaya to find his missing Thai ladyfriend, who seems to have been kidnapped by gangsters pre...

Chased into silver,
Side by side:
The images.
To have them tell you... A many-crested roof,
To cut the wind and the birds as they pass.
North
go the snow, the birds and the grass
(not much industry, there).
An aerial
arabesque or ear, Strung in the wind. Greetings, Goodbye. Tree tree tree and tree This is the song: No time, no time to see the green before it bursts open. Again it was spring, the bird tried to sing, but its voice was confusion, confusion: Helpless, Grass. And there was a house, And in it, a man, a woman, a child and an old woman. Nine holes in the soul. A chimney-cap, spinning. Three colours: Green, black and grey. The melting snow, the forest, the rushes, the river and the boats. Fir, and pine, and birch, Alder and willow, the willow a bush, And the hazel: Here it grows up to the height of a tree. Again it was spring. Long weeks the woman breathes into it, then it cries out: I am born! I am a girl! And I'll go out by myself and play in front of the house. Wooden birds: their beaks point at the sky.

Olen kirjoittanut eilen tässä samassa pöydässä pienen laulun. Tässä laulussa annan viisumin keväästä syksyyn. Tässä maassa kun kesä alkaa, alkaa jo syksy näkyä kesän lävitse. Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor
is a new section at JACK , culminating after we received feedback regarding a couple essays presented in Issue 4. We encourage suggestions, clarifications, criticism, rebuttals, and even praise from readers. Not all letters will be printed; much like the other contributions, letters should be well-written and relevant. It should be noted that authors freely express their own opinions, which may or may not be the view of the editors or the other contributors. We hope that JACK will be a dynamic magazine, one that encourages various ideas and welcomes debateall in the spirit of remaining open-minded and accepting of differing viewpoints. If you would like your letter to be considered for publication here, e-mail us at editor@jackmagazine.com Regarding Mark Spitzer's "Transcript of an Ed Dorn Rant "

Dear Michael, Both of your e-mails and subsequent query in hand. My "first-thought" response to your question "What do you think would be a good way to deal with this?" would of course be "Just remove the piece from the magazine." Since that, however, would most likely elicit yelps of "censorship," these are my thoughts: Spitzer is the author of a notorious character assassination piece on his erstwhile mentor. Poems by Anselm Hollo "Hollo is an epic poet. . . . Against explosions of carnage and fear, there is a persistence that is as close to heroic as I can imagine. It continues! Improvisational humor, smarter ‘n paint, counterpoints a profoundly mortal pulse. Equity. Compassion. Tenderness. He writes . . . out of hipness that knows staying alive was always a matter of exploiting the unexpected." - St Mark’s Poetry Project Newsletter ". . . it is in the short lyric where Hollo excels. With a sense of line derived from Williams and Creeley and a sense of humor straight from the New York school, he captures the possibilities of transient moments, becoming both commentator and object of comment." - John Stickney, Small Press "Anselm Hollo’s so sly and subtle he almost melts in your mind." - Richard Silberg, Poetry Flash

Five from Finland: Mirkka Rekola, Kai Nieminen, Laurie Otonkoski, Tomi Kontio, Riina Katajavuori Edited and translated by Anselm Hollo Reality street Editions, 4 Howard Court, Peckham Rye, London, SE15 3PH ISBN 1-874400-21-0 Leaving aside the problems of translation, especially given the abstract nature of some of the work, I have to say that I found this collection an enjoyable read. There’s a quiet profundity in the work of Mirkka Rekola who mixes thought with feeling in brief descriptive pieces which frequently venture into the realm of the unsayable. Although this would suggest ‘vagueness’, the nebulous shade of a penumbral shadow rather than a crisply outlined form, her images are concrete and the similes direct even though what is being suggested is far from clear. The apparent evocation of a mood, a state of mind in isolation becomes a more general reflection on the phenomenological world: Sits at the table where I used to sit, Looks out at that street. Spoon in coffee cup, a tinkling like the one a moment ago in the shore wind by the sailboats.
