There’s a quiet profundity in the work of Mirkka Rekola who mixes thought with feeling in brief descriptive pieces which frequently venture into the realm of the unsayable. Although this would suggest ‘vagueness’, the nebulous shade of a penumbral shadow rather than a crisply outlined form, her images are concrete and the similes direct even though what is being suggested is far from clear. The apparent evocation of a mood, a state of mind in isolation becomes a more general reflection on the phenomenological world: Sits at the table where I used to sit, Looks out at that street. Spoon in coffee cup, a tinkling like the one a moment ago in the shore wind by the sailboats.
