Proving that the classic Hammet/Chandler private eye plot can be enriched in even the most exotic setting, Arjouni continues his pungent series about the Turkish-German detective Kemal Kayankaya. Like his creator, Kayankaya is the son of Turkish guest workers, and he gets very little respect from his adopted country. A client, an "average schmuck from Frankfurt's West End" named Weidenbusch, wants Kayankaya to find his missing Thai ladyfriend, who seems to have been kidnapped by gangsters pre...

Sarajevo: A War Journal

Dizdarevic does a good job of showing the terror of everyday life in Sarajevo. What struck me about this book is how the population slowly accomodated itself to random shootings and starvation. As the population adjusted itself, you can feel the anger welling up inside the author against the world leaders and the UN. UN troops sat around and did nothing. These troops were Canadians and French who watched Serb troops shoot down innocent civilians. When the Bosnians tried to defend themselves, ...

A DOUBLE FOR JACK COLLOM Anselm Hollo Sort of a tough day, this, albeit sunny All the leaves positively shooting off their trees Where are my glasses? Where’s my bag of tricks? If you think this is me talking, you may be right But I too would rather listen to Karl Who speaking of Heinrich had this to say: “I love him as much as his works And do not mind his political weaknesses Poets, you see, are queer fish, and must be allowed To go their own ways. They should not be assessed By the measure of ordinary or even extraordinary men.” Thank you, Karl. I love you too, across the centuries. You my man. As is Heinrich, who unfortunately Loses more in translation than you do. But you, dear Jack, and I can read him in German and hope to share his self-savaging wit in Dichtkunst and Kunstdichtung ah to motor along the beaches of Boulder with you in a convoy of heroic young figures on skates past twenty-five foot plexiglass prairie dog with flashing red eyes above twenty-eighth street then return to our stille Kammer to dream up more verbal outrage here in the going-under of the evening land what a botched job terraforming Earth in our image has been but as long as we keep on throwing out the baby of sentimentality with the bath water of shlock there is hope and I don’t know about faith but love for sure Note: Karl Karl Marx. To date, he has written and translated more than 40 books. Hollo currently teaches creative writing at Naropa University, a Buddhist-inspired liberal arts college in Boulder, Colo.
