Famous Scots
- James Hogg (1770-1835) The Ettrick Shepherd
Born at Ettrick, Selkirkshire, in the Scottish Border country, Hogg was the son of a shepherd. He received a scanty education but at the age of 16 he was inspired to write poetry by hearing a reading of "The Gentle Shepherd" written by Allan Ramsay (1686-1758). His poetical life was further developed by a connection with Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Hogg supplied Scott with a number of ballads for his "Border Minstrelsy" collection. But it was not until 1807, when a volume poems entitled "The Mountain Bard" was published that he earned any recognition. It is interesting to note that he published a practical guide to the care of sheep in the same year! But the money earned from his published works were soon lost in unprofitable farming. He published "The Queen's Wake" in 1813, a series of ballads supposedly recited before Mary Queen of Scots at a competition of Scottish bards. This earned Hogg some recognition outside of the Borders as it possessed some real merit, showing a strong if rather fantastic imagination. Later Life
Hogg spent the latter half of his life partly in Edinburgh and partly at a farm at Altrive in Yarrow in the Borders. The farm had been given to him by the duke of Buccleuch.

Born in 1770 to a poor farming family, Hogg began to help with shepherding as a child. In the 1790s he was employed at Yarrow by Willie Laidlaw's father, and began to read and educate himself. A growing enthusiasm for Scottish poetry led to the publication of his dialect Scottish Pastorals in 1801, and to the friendship of Sir Walter Scott , whom he encountered over the Minstrelsy. In later years he published a number of volumes of verse, encouraged by Scott, and in 1824 his masterpiece, The private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. His popularity as a poet was due in part to his background as a shepherd, but this is his only professional treatise, about sheep, their care and diseases. It received a prize from the Highland Society. The surname of 'the Ettrick Shepherd' might be suppposed by English and American readers to have to do with pigs. In fact theword ' hog' in Scotland and parts of England, and as used in this book ('Of the Diseases of Hoggs, or young Sheep'), denotes a sheep older than a lamb but before its first shearing, and this probably reflects the ultimate derivation of the word (see OED).

James Hogg and The Unfathomable Hell
Author Richard D. Jackson Independent Scholar Abstract The use of opium, often in the form of laudanum, was a constituent element of the Romantic Imagination. Coleridge, Thomas De Quincey, and Charles Lloyd were all subject to its bondage. In Scotland the literati of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine were aware of its prevalence. James Hogg had a ‘perfect horror’ of the effects of laudanum and gave great offence to John Gibson Lockhart when, in his Anecdotes of Sir W. Scott , he revealed that Lady Scott had taken opium. In one of the ‘Noctes Ambrosianae’ published in Blackwood’s , probably written by John Wilson (himself possibly an opium user) Hogg’s persona, accompanied by De Quincey, also a Blackwood’s contributor, speaks eloquently about its horrid effects. Hogg parodied Coleridge’s poetry and was familiar with the unfathomable hell into which opium’s usage plunged its ‘eaters’. The nightmarish experiences of Robert Wringhim in Hogg’s

    Hogg in Youth
James Hogg was born in 1770 at Ettrick Hall, at the top of the Ettrick Valley. The second of four sons of an impoverished farmer, he left school after six months' formal education. Aged seven, he began to work on the lowest rung of the farming ladder - as a cowherd. But he had learned, at his mother's knee, the great oral tradition of ballads and folklore of the Borders. And her father, "the far-famed Will O'Phaup" was reputed to have been the last man to converse with the fairies. In his mid-teens, James Hogg taught himself to read and write, and to play the fiddle, and entered the skilled profession of shepherding. He began making songs and verses for local gatherings. The other young people of the valleys called him "Jamie the Poeter". His career had begun
    Hogg and Scott
At the turn of the eighteenth century, Hogg was working as a shepherd on the farm on Blackhouse in Yarrow for the Laidlaw family, who opened their hearts and library to the young shepherd poet. It was at this time that Walter Scott, the newly appointed sheriff of Selkirk, was roaming the Border Valleys in pursuit of the disappearing ballads of the Borders. Through the Laidlaws, he met James Hogg and his mother who had a rich store of the ballads.

Extempore Effusion upon the Death of James Hogg
Wordsworth's note WHEN first, descending from the moorlands,
I saw the Stream of Yarrow glide
Along a bare and open valley,
    The Ettrick Shepherd
was my guide. When last along its banks I wandered,
Through groves that had begun to shed
Their golden leaves upon the pathways,
My steps the Border-minstrel led. The mighty Minstrel breathes no longer,
    'Mid mouldering ruins low he lies;
And death upon the braes of Yarrow,
Has closed the Shepherd-poet's eyes: Nor has the rolling year twice measured
From sign to sign, its stedfast course, Since every mortal power of Coleridge Was frozen at its marvellous source; The rapt One, of the godlike forehead, The heaven-eyed creature sleeps in earth: And Lamb, the frolic and the gentle, Has vanished from his lonely hearth. Like clouds that rake the mountain-summits, Or waves that own no curbing hand, How fast has brother followed brother From sunshine to the sunless land! Yet I, whose lids from infant slumber Were earlier raised, remain to hear

Governor James Stephen (Jim) Hogg OVERNOR James Stephen (Jim) Hogg, in whose 1892 reelection bid House wielded considerable influence, was the first native-born governor of Texas, serving as the nineteenth governor of the state from 1891-1895. Hogg was born on March 24, 1851 near Rusk in Cherokee County, one of five children of Lucanda and Joseph Louis Hogg, an attorney and brigadier general in the army. His formal education was limited; he attended a private school for a short time and was tutored at home until the advent of the Civil War. In 1862, when Hogg was eleven years old, his father died and his mother died in the following year. Hogg, his two brothers and two sisters had to attend to the family plantation. In 1866, Hogg attended school in Alabama. Upon his return to Texas, he began working with Andrew Jackson's newspaper in Cherokee County, while continuing his self-education. The family estate was soon sold to pay taxes and Hogg went to work for the local sheriff. Incurring the ire of outlaws, he was followed over the Cherokee County line and shot in the back. He soon recovered, however, and from 1871 to 1873 worked at various newspapers in East Texas. In 1873, he became a justice of the peace in Quitman, Wood County. Two years later he received his license to practice law and married Sarah Ann (Sallie) Stinson.
