The Life of James Hogg
Taken from the Daily Mail, Saturday, May 20, 2000 by Jeremy Hodges In 1803, the successful poet and advocate Walter Scott invited a remarkable guest to dinner at his Edinburgh residence. The plaid-clad figure, hands stained with tar from doctoring the sheep he had just driven to market, ate and drank heartily before putting his feet up on the sofa and proceeding to entertain Scott and his wife with jokes, stories and songs. James Hogg was in his element, but next morning felt it prudent to pen an apology to his host: ‘I am afraid that I was at least half seas over last night, for I cannot for my life remember what passed when it was late ... I have the consolation, however, of remembering that Mrs. Scott kept us company all or most of the time, which she certainly would not have done had I been very rude.’ Scott’s guest was one of the greatest literary talents to come out of Scotland, more prolific a poet than Burns and arguably a more powerful teller of tales than Scott, yet Hogg’s outspoken manner and quaint rustic image as the Ettrick Shepherd kept him ultimately from the accolade he deserved.

James S. Hogg
James S. Hogg was born March 24, 1851 near Rusk, in east Texas. His birthplace would later give him the distinction of becoming the first native-born governor of Texas. Hogg was orphaned at the age of eleven when his father, a Confederate general, died in May 1862, and his mother died soon afterwards. To help support himself, he worked as a typesetter in a newspaper office at an early age. He later owned his own paper. Meanwhile, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1875. In 1878, Hogg held his first public office when he was elected county attorney of Wood County. He then ran and was elected district attorney for the seventh judicial district. In 1886, Hogg became Attorney-General of the State of Texas, then was re-elected to that post two years later. He easily won the Democratic nomination for governor in 1890, and went on to become governor of Texas from 1891 through 1895. Even among larger-than-life Texans, Hogg was an imposing figure. At six feet two inches and two hundred and eighty five pounds, the feisty governor was a popular advocate of the common citizen and did much to strengthen public respect for law enforcement in general. He sponsored anti-trust legislation and helped establish the powerful Railroad Commission during his tenure as governor. After retiring as governor, Hogg continued an active interest in good government, but held no other public office. He pursued his successful and growing business interests until his death in Houston on March 6, 1906. He is buried in Austin.

James Hogg
Hogg was born in 1770 at Ettrickhall farm in the Ettrick valley: the cottage where he was born does not survive, but a Victorian monument marks the spot. His father, a sheep-farmer, became bankrupt in 1777, and as a result the young Hogg's formal schooling came to a premature end, the rest of his childhood being spent working as a cowherd and later as a shepherd. During his twenties, Hogg was employed as a shepherd by a relative of his mother's, Mr Laidlaw of Blackhouse farm, in Yarrow. At Blackhouse Hogg had access to a good collection of books; and he began to read widely, and also to write. Thereafter Hogg earned his living partly through various farming projects, and partly as a professional writer. In these roles he divided much of his time between Edinburgh and his native Ettrick Forest. Hogg published mainly poetry until he was in his late forties. A particularly notable poem from this period is

HOGG ON SHEEP HOGG, James, the Ettrick Shepherd. The Shepherd's Guide: being a practical Treatise on the Diseases of Sheep, their Causes, and the best Means of preventing them; with Observations on the suitable Farm-Stocking for the various Climates of this Country ... Edinburgh: Printed by J. Ballantyne and Co. for Archibald Constable and Co. Edinburgh; and John Murray ... London. 1807. 8vo., pp. vi, 338; a fine copy in near contemporary half calf and marbled boards; bookplate of A. Lamont of Knockdow. First edition. Born in 1770 to a poor farming family, Hogg began to help with shepherding as a child. In the 1790s he was employed at Yarrow by Willie Laidlaw's father, and began to read and educate himself. A growing enthusiasm for Scottish poetry led to the publication of his dialect Scottish Pastorals in 1801, and to the friendship of Scott, whom he encountered over the Minstrelsy. In later years he published a number of volumes of verse, encouraged by Scott, and in 1824 his masterpiece, The private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. His popularity as a poet was due in part to his background as a shepherd, but this is his only professional treatise, about sheep, their care and diseases. It received a prize from the Highland Society. The surname of 'the Ettrick Shepherd' might be suppposed by English and American readers to have to do with pigs. In fact the word ' hog' in Scotland and parts of England, and as used in this book ('Of the Diseases of Hoggs, or young Sheep'), denotes a sheep older than a lamb but before its first shearing, and this probably reflects the ultimate derivation of the word (see OED).
