Vienna, Austria 1956) Josef Hoffman was born in Pirnitz, Moravia (now Chechoslovakia) in 1870. He studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Carl von Hasenauer and Otto Wagner, whose theories of a functional, modern architecture profoundly effected his architectural works. He won the Rome prize in 1895 and the following year joined the Wagner's office. Hoffman established his own office in 1898 and taught at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule from 1899 until 1936. He was a founding member of the Vienna Secession, a group of revolutionary artists and architects. He actively supported the group by designing its exhibitions and writing for the magazine Ver Sacrum. In 1903 he helped found the Wiener Werkstate. Although Hoffman's earliest works belong to a Secessionist tangent of the Art Nouveau, his later works introduced a vocabulary of regular grids and squares. The functional clarity and abstract purity of his later works mark him as an important precursor of the Modern Movement. A highly individualistic architect and designer, Hoffman's work combined the simplicity of craft production with a refined aesthetic ornament. He died in Vienna in 1956.

Whilst Hoffmann's complete works have been translated many times in France and proved strongly influential on French writers, particularly in the 1830s and 1840s, Hoffmann is only known in extracts in the English speaking world. There has not been a universal, homogenous translation of his works into English, mainly translations of individual short stories or collections of stories. In the 19th century the majority of translations appeared in literary periodicals and had been translated anonymously by amateurs with an enthusiasm for literature. Hoffmann/Klaus Deterding Der Feind Das fertige Fragment 2002/05 Ixlibris Wenn Schriftsteller mitten in der Arbeit an einem neuen Werk sterben, so ist das für die Literaturwissenschaft eine große Herausforderung. Man forscht, welche Intention der Dichter hatte und wie er weiter vorgehen wollte. Meist sind Briefe, Notizen und Tagebucheintragungen hilfreich. Doch E.T.A. Hoffmann lässt uns da völlig im Stich. Es gehört also eine große Portion Mut dazu und vor allem eine immense Kenntnis des Hoffmann´schen Gedankengebäudes, wenn ein Autor sich daran macht, ein noch sehr unausgefeiltes Fragment vollenden zu wollen. Klaus Deterding ist beides zu Eigen und er erreicht es, dass ohne den Hinweis im Anhang wohl niemand den Finger auf die Nahtstelle legen könnte. Das allein ist schon eine großartige Leistung. Doch fragen wir uns, welches Werk entstand dabei. Hat es sich gelohnt für den Leser, dass hier eine vor beinahe 200 Jahren angelegte Novelle fertiggeschrieben wurde? Die Handlung spielt im Jahre 1524 in Nürnberg. Der Renaissance-Maler Albrecht Dürer und ein imaginärer Pflegesohn namens Raphael, Mathilde, eine bezaubernde Patriziertochter sind die Hauptfiguren sowie eine dunkle Gegengestalt, der Ritter Solfaterra. Hoffmann legt die einzelnen Erzählstränge so an, dass sich letztlich alles um Liebe und Hass dreht, aber auch um die Selbstzweifel eines genialen Künstlers. Es muss eine Geschichte vor der Geschichte geben, die in der Novelle ans Licht kommen und zu einem Ende geführt werden soll.
