Hoffmann, E.T.A. Djävulselixiret Hoffmann var den tyska romantikens sista stora geni. Då Djävulselixiret utkom hade romantiken till stor del redan spelat ut sin roll som litterär rörelse. Hoffmann var egentligen jurist till yrket men ödet ledde honom in på den konstnärliga banan. För Hoffmann skrev inte bara böcker. Han var även känd musiker och tecknare. I Djävulselixiret finner vi flera av de klassiska attributen för den romantiskt groteska romanen, såväl formellt som till innehåll. Bokens huvudperson är kapucinermunken Medardus och det är också han som skrivit denna text, till vilket Hoffmann enbart framställer sig själv som utgivare. (Detta meta-litterära drag används flitigt av bland annat svenska 90-talsförfattare i den groteska genren, se Nikanor Teratalogens Äldreomsorgen i Övre Kågedalen och Alexander Ahndorils Jaromir Medardus framställer sig som en mycket foglig och fridsam munk till den dag han frestas att dricka det elixir som bevaras på hans kloster och som sägs ha överlämnats av Den Onde självt till den helige Antonius för att fresta honom. Väl påverkad av denna dryck ger sig Medardus ut i världen för att söka upp sin stora (och genom klosterlöftet förlorade) kärlek, Aurelia. Medardus färd leder honom genom flertalet synder, med mord som den yttersta. Hans personlighet är mångfacetterad och kan ses som en personifikation av synden, eller snarare syndaren (= enligt den kristna tron, genom arvssynden, alla människor).
