    Beyond A Passion for Narrative
I think of that preacher quite often. It seems to me he has a good deal in common with the writer. Nobody asked us to do this thing we do. And there's certainly no guarantee that anyone will be interested in what we have to offer. He has much in common with the teacher of writing, as well - a certain presumptuousness that is inevitably tempered with a dose of humiliation every once in a while. A certain foolishness, too, if Gore Vidal is right and the act of teaching writing has ruined more writers even than booze. And of course, he has much in common with the writer who not only teaches writing but has the audacity to write a textbook on writing. It is as if that priest had, in the madness of his isolation, unilaterally declared himself Bishop of the Klondike and started training others to follow his lonely path! There are plenty of reasons NOT to do it, of course. Writing a textbook, I mean.
    • Teaching colleagues may sneer: ‘What makes him think HE's the one to do it?’ Fellow writers may sneer: ‘Just proves he's more of an academic than a REAL writer,’ though some will condemn you for spoiling the myth that all REAL writers are natural-born geniuses who don't NEED to understand what they're doing. Students may read your published work in order to find proof that you don't always practise what you preach. And fans of your fiction may feel betrayed to discover that your books did not arrive, fully formed on ‘official heaven-produced paper’ lowered from the clouds.

    THE MACKEN CHARM
    by Jack Hodgins
    Reviewed by Peter Buitenhuis
In the Macken Charm , Jack Hodgins has returned to the old stamping ground of his most successful novels the eastern coastal region of upper Vancouver Island. The novel has a wonderful cast of eccentric and wild characters, most of whom are Mackens. Extended to hell and back, the Macken family is a powerful and cohesive social unit. The family is drawn together in the novel for one purpose, an event that unifies the book: the funeral of Glory, young wife of the wildest of the Macken bunch, Toby. The present time of the novel is the summer of 1956 a time of innocence, or at least of naivety. Much of the narrative, however, is taken up with flashbacks of when Glory was alive and brought her spectacular beauty to unsettle and amaze the Macken clan. One of the most unsettled of her admirers is the narrator of the novel, Toby's nephew Rusty, a young man who is shortly to leave the island to attend university. Rusty has long been a star-struck movie fan with dreams of becoming a famous director. He carries around a broken Bell and Howell movie camera, and sees and "shoots" the world as a long-running film. Glory, to him, is "Rita Hayworth . . . Breathtakingly frail and pretty, mysterious as a star." The scenes of the novel often appear as sets, and Hodgins is at his best when describing the tumultuous beauty of the island shoreline, the untidy clutter of its fields and streams, the endless green forests, or the towering glacier above the town.

    Lucan History
The Lucan Area Before European Contact
Back in 1648, the area within a 90km radius of London, Ontario was occupied by the Attawandrons or Neutrals, a native tribe with Iroquois origins. They were known as the Neutrals because they often acted as a mediator between the warring Huron and Iroquois tribes. This was a result of the Neutral's control of the local supply of flint, which was needed by both of these tribes for arrows and tool-making. This neutrality was broken after war broke out in the Autumn of 1650 between the Attawandrons and the Iroquois. The Iroquois wiped out the Neutral villages with their superior fighting skills and the few survivors fled to other regions. The Huron Tract
The Canada Company, incorporated in 1824 by a Scottish man named John Galt, was instated to purchase large tracts of land in Upper Canada that could be sold to colonists (mainly English, Scottish and Irish) at affordable prices. The area that is now Lucan was a part of the Huron Tract, which began at the north boundary of London Township and extended westward to include Huron County, and Perth, Lambton, Williams, McGillivray and Biddulph Townships in Middlesex County.
    The Wilberforce Settlement
To American slaves, Canada provided them with an opportunity to flee the cruelty of their owners. In the early 1830's, 460 slaves came to the Wilberforce Settlement, a black colonization project using Canada Company land within Biddulph Township. Unfortunately, because of the following problems the project was not greatly successful and attracted few black settlers:
