    Jack Hodgins
Born in 1938, Jack Hodgins grew up, as his parents did, in the small town of Merville which is located in the Comox Valley of Vancouver Island. He started writing as a young boy and left home in 1957 to study English literature at the University of British Columbia. There, he took a course in creative writing taught by Earle Birney, an experience which validated his dreams of becoming a published writer. Marrying in 1960 and graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Education, Hodgins returned with his wife to Vancouver Island where he took a position teaching High School English in Nanaimo, a job he held until 1979. Despite a busy teaching career and family life with his wife and three children, Hodgins still managed to find time to write and submit his works for publication. It was not until 1968, however, that one of his submissions did not elicit a rejection slip. After that first appearance in print, his stories were accepted by a number of publications, including Descant The Capilano Review , and Canadian Forum . This series of successes culminated in 1976 with the publication of his first volume of short stories

A Portal Interview with Jack Hodgins: an Excerpt
    by Vivian Moreau
Jack Hodgins was born and raised on Vancouver Island. He taught high school in Nanaimo for nearly twenty years and now teaches Creative Writing at the University of Victoria. His latest novel, 'Broken Ground', was published in 1998. Portal: Do you still remember what it felt like when you recieved your acceptance for "Every Day of His Life"? Hodgins: Yeah. My daughter was with me when we went to pick up the mail; it was rural route out there. Our mailbox was way down at the bottom of the hill. She swears that when I opened the letter I did cartwheels down the side of the road (laughs). I'm sure she's wrong, because I can't do cartwheels, but she thinks that I did them anyway, unconsciously, the way that somebody else can pick up a car if they need to save somebody's life. I don't know. I have no memory of that, but I do remember the overwhelming sense of having crossed a line with the before and after. Maybe they're not so popular now, but it seems in those days a lot of advertising was done with before and after pictures: before you paint your house, after you paint your house. You'd see them in the magazines. I remember thinking that in writing, there is a before and after; there is no half-way between. You're either a wannabe or you're a published writer. And I never told anybody but my family that I wrote, because I was afraid of the inevitable: oh, that's interesting, have I seen anything of yours? And then you have to say well, actually I haven't published anything yet. And then they say, rolling their eyes, another one.
