Russell Hoban
4 February 1925 ? Biography
Russell Conwell Hoban was born on February 4, 1925 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania to Abram T. and Jeanette (Dimmerman) Hoban, two Jewish immigrants from the Ukraine. His father was an advertising manager for the Jewish Daily Forward . His mother became a store owner to support her family after her husband died when Russell was 11 years old. He has two sisters named Tana and Freeda. Hoban was born into an artistic family. To stimulate his children's development, Hoban's father would reward them with nickels for witty remarks, exceptional drawings, and similar activities. His father, who worked in Philadelphia, also directed amateur productions of plays. From the age of five, Hoban drew and sketched as much as possible. His older sister Tana was a successful illustrator whose work included covers for the Saturday Evening Post . She was a major influence on Hoban's art. He graduated from Lansdale High School in 1941 when he was sixteen. Upon graduating, he entered Temple University, but dropped out after only five weeks. He decided to attend the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art. He took classes there for a year and a half. It was here that he met his future wife, artist and illustrator Lillian Aberman.

Lillian Hoban with a few of her grandchildren, 1993 Lillian Hoban is one of America's best loved author/ illustrators of children's books. She is perhaps best known for her lovable I-Can Read hero Arthur, a young chimpanzee and his little sister Violet. Together the pair explore the ups and downs and ultimate humor of early childhood.
She also illustrated Russell Hoban's six books about Frances the badger- widely recognized as one of the great classics of children's literature.
But those are only a few of her many, many books for children (see catalog link below). Hoban worked non-stop until her death in 1998, leaving behind a wealth of books for young readers to enjoy for many generations to come. Lillian Hoban's Book Catalog Biography Order Lillian Hoban's books from:

Russell Hoban
Russell Hoban was born in Pennsylvania and at one point worked as an advertising copywriter. For the last several decades he has lived in London and written children's books, which I can heartily recommend to readers of any age; his adult novels have a similar whimsical disrespect for normal reality. An advertising background is evidenced by a series of unforgettable catchphrases - from "You gotta be your own ardship and your own black dog" (from Riddley Walker ) to "Out among the out among the out among the dots .. BEYOND THE LAST VISIBLE DOG." (from The Mouse and his Child ) (most other sentences do not include dogs). If you're looking for more information, you should go directly Dave Awl's comprehensive Hoban site, The Head of Orpheus DAn's recommendations:
Riddley Walker
Set amongst the ruins of society some centuries after nuclear armeggedon, this novel is written in a highly inventive pidgin and includes lots of neat corruptions of today's world. But the underlying darkness is less easily decoded.
Pilgermann
The 'sequel' to Riddley Walker (in spirit alone), the narrator travels around the European world of the eleventh century. More hallucinatory and disturbing than Riddley Walker.

Riddley Walker
Russell Hoban
(Expanded Edition, 1998) Riddley Walker is the story of a young man of the same name who comes of age in a long-post-nuclear war Britain. But that's like saying that The Lord of the Rings is about a war in a fantasy land. It's true, but it rather misses the point. Really, the plot of this book is secondary to the language. Riddley Walker is written entirely in a demotic form of English, long-debased from what we speak today (the story is set thousands of years in the future). A small sample, chosen nearly at random, a passage where Abel Goodparley, the Pry Mincer, is speaking to Riddley: He said, 'Whats the use of helping qwirys on him that poor simpo I dont think he knows nothing to tel no moren any of them ever do. I do like other Pry Mincers done befor me becaws thats what the Mincery wants. Im terning them frontwards in a woal lot of ways only I cant do it all at 1ce. We aint none of us what you cud call qwick but mos of them roun me theyre 2ce as unqwick as I am Iwl tel you that. May be you ben thinking Im your nemminy but that aint how it is. You think like I do you feal like I do we aint nemminys. Its them as cant think nor feal none of them things theyre the nemminy. Them peopl as jus want to hol on to what theyve got theyre afeart to move even 1 littl step forit. I dont care if its Mincery of forms or fentses its them as wont move theyre the nemminy. Riddle may be you dont know it but you dont have no better frend nor me?"

http://www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/score/bread/breadtg.html CyberGuide by Beverly Nelson and Susan D. Murphy Last revised by Susan D. Murphy, August 23, 2002
    Introduction
This supplemental unit was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP). The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the World Wide Web change continuously. It is advisable that teachers review all links before introducing CyberGuides to students. This unit, designed to supplement the teaching of Bread and Jam for Frances by Russell Hoban , consists of five Internet activities in which students explore the following questions:
    • What are badgers?
    • Why is bread and jam not a complete meal choice?
    • What choices can the student make to eat healthily?
    • How are bread and jam made?
    During this unit, students will:
    • Create a scientific journal containing facts about badgers or other small wild animals.
    • Learn about healthy eating choices and the food pyramid.
