The battle of Okinawa was one of the most fiercely contested theaters in the history of World War II. The Japanese war machine was crumbling, and the Okinawans were ordered to fight to the death, or to be executed themselves as traitors to the Emperor. In fear and despair fed mightily by Japanese propaganda, hundreds of women, children, and the old committed suicide rather than surrender to the blue-eyed "barbarians." Because of this sacrifice, forced upon a group of people that considers itself separate and apart from mainland Japan, feelings of anger remain: anger at Japan for a long history of dominance and discrimination, and anger, of course, at the United States, for its war-time policy of decimation, and post-war military presence. Ghosts abound in beautiful Okinawa, and Jayne Hitchcock knows exactly where they can be found. She tells of the ghost of an American G.I. dressed in full combat gear, who repeatedly approaches a base gate and after asking for a light for his cigarette, disappears. She tells of the underwater ghosts that will chase you if you swim off Cape Kyan-one scene of mass suicide. In a high security area at Kadena base, hundreds of ghosts of Japanese soldiers still march at night, she says. In southern Okinawa, Nakanishi Junior High School, built in the middle of a battlefield, is the scene of strange sights and cold spots. A partly-built theme hotel was abandoned by workers because of "restless spirits" from a nearby cave. Curtains still hang at the windows, unused furniture sits in the middle of this elaborate complex, left to weather and rot. A lone monk lives there performing rites to placate the spirits of the dead.

Chance Encounter in Chat Room Leads to Stalking Across Two Continents Sabine Iber is an art director. When she met Mohamed El Bedewy in a chat room, they spoke about business, not romance. And when she accepted his invitation to meet her for lunch while he was visiting her area, she never envisioned what would happen over the next two years. He started stalking her on the Internet, moved to her town, rented a parking space next to hers, and would bombard her daily with phone calls. Despite a restraining order in Munich, he continued to stalk her and she fled to Australia, but her stalker followed her there, even occasionally stalking her friends. El Bedewy, 47, has been jailed by a Warrnambool (Australia) magistrate for four months, with three months suspended, for stalking. He will be deported later in June 2003 when he is released.

An online posse tracks down an Internet stalker
By Jack Mingo Somebody was stalking Jayne Hitchcock on the Internet. Last December, as Jayne and her husband Chris were sitting down to a quiet holiday dinner with friends in their Crofton, Maryland, home, the first in a string of mysterious phone calls jangled the Hitchcocks' nerves. "It was just odd at first," Jayne Hitchcock recalls, "but it became terrifying. We had no idea what was going on." Some calls were hang-ups, but others were far stranger "Loverboy" phoning collect from somewhere unknown, a student calling from Germany and wanting, he said in halting English, to discuss his "sexual fantasies." As December melted into January, the calls built to a crescendo of 25-30 a day. If she had been able to distance herself from this sudden, disturbing attention, Hitchcock might have found these sex-tinged inquiries ironic. She is, after all, a published author of childrens' books, with five non-fiction titles and one fiction work to her credit. Why would anyone want to harass her? It wasn't long before a clue arrived, in the form of another phone call, this one from a helpful stranger. "Do you know your name is being 'spammed' on sex ads all over the Usenet?" he asked.

Hunting an Internet stalker ... by Jack Mingo A cyberstalker on the Internet, a victim caught in the Web. It's the fare of paperback techno-thrillers and Sandra Bullock movies. In real life it hardly ever happens but when it does, it can be terrifying. Hitchcockian, in fact. Coincidentally, it's been happening to Jayne Hitchcock of Crofton, MD author of six books. After weeks of distress, Hitchcock filed a civil suit on January 13 against the literary agency she believes is responsible, in what might become a landmark case about what's acceptable in cyberspace. The harassment started on December 20. Jayne and husband Chris were hosting a holiday dinner for friends when they began receiving a deluge of mysterious phone calls. Some were hang-ups, but others were odd, like "Loverboy" calling collect from somewhere or a student from Germany wanting, he said in halting English, to talk about his sexual fantasies. "It became terrifying," says Hitchcock. "We had no idea what was going on." Another phone call provided a clue: "Do you know your name is being 'spammed' on sex ads all over the Usenet?" Despite sensational stories, the Internet is generally benign. In its Usenet area, you can find thousands of discussion "newsgroups" on every imaginable subject from quilting to body piercing, where people read and answer messages from others of similar interests. Most malicious behavior is confined to "flame wars" stinging exchanges of sarcasm or insults.

The trouble started last December 21. Jayne Hitchcock and her husband Chris were sitting down to a holiday dinner with friends when they got the first of what would become a deluge of mysterious phone calls. Some were hang-ups, and some were more bizarre "Loverboy" calling collect from somewhere unknown; a student calling from Germany wanting, he said in halting English, to discuss his "sexual fantasies." "It was just odd at first, but it became terrifying," recalls Hitchcock, the author of six nonfiction and children's books. "We had no idea what was going on." Another phone call, this one from a helpful stranger, provided a clue: "Do you know your name is being `spammed' on sex ads all over the Usenet?" This news that Hitchcock's name, phone number, and address were being disseminated indiscriminately on the Internet was the first sign that she was a victim of a new kind of harassment, one that exploits the breadth and interconnectedness of cyberspace to turn someone's life into absolute hell. The Internet has long operated according to its own generally accepted codes of conduct, and Usenet is no exception. Usenet is a vast network of newsgroups, categorized discussions on every imaginable subject from quilting to body piercing. And newsgroup members adhere to certain tacit standards of behavior. Most maliciousness, for instance, is confined to "flame wars" stinging online exchanges of sarcasm or insults.

Vera Jayne Palmer visited Hollywood for the first time when she was thirteen. After a tour of Twentieth Century Fox Studios, she and her mother went to the Brown Derby for lunch. Jayne spotted The Great Gildersleeve radio stars Dennis Day and Harold Peary, and asked for their autographs. "You know Mama," she said when she returned, "one day some other young girl is going to make her way across this room and ask for my autograph."
Jayne's desire to become a star was not ignited that day; the trip only fanned flames that had always burned within her. Her parents, Herbert and Vera, were witness to her enthusiastic performances at an early age. When she was five, Jayne was singing for anyone who would listen, including her gigantic collection of stuffed animals. At seven, she would stand in her driveway and play the violin for passers-by. Though her idols changed over the years- from Shirley Temple to Gene Tierney, Hedy Lamarr, and Jean Harlow - they were always movie stars.

Internet spam has nothing to do with its namesake, the canned luncheon meat. The cyber variety of spam are those annoying e-mail messages that seem to fill e-mail boxes with offers for Viagra, wrinkle cream and work-at-home schemes. Most spam is nothing more than a nuisance, providing the recipient doesn't fall for the too-good-to-be-true offers they contain. But spam's dark cousin, Internet harassment, can pose bigger problems. York, Maine, author Jayne A. Hitchcock knows first hand about Internet harassment, and she regularly lectures on the subject to corporate executives, law enforcement agencies and the general public.

It started in 1996 when Hitchcock responded to an advertisement posted by a literary agency. After dialoging with the agency, she sent in a book proposal and promptly received a $75 bill for a reading fee. Apparently the fictitious agency had been charging unsuspecting consumers bogus fees. The interaction quickly turned sinister, with Hitchcock being stalked by the "literary firm." In December 1996, Hitchcock and UMUC received an "e-mail bomb," an attempt to render an e-mail account useless by overloading it with messages. The agency then tried to obtain Hitchcock's new, unpublished phone number by contacting UMUC by mail, claiming to be interested in hiring Hitchcock but failing to provide information beyond a company name in the form of an acronym. UMUC immediately contacted Hitchcock and the proper authorities.
