Né le 18 juin 1932 à Bromsgrove dans le Worcestershire, Geoffrey Hill est allé à l'école dans le village voisin de Fairfield. La nuit du 14 novembre 1940, il a vu l'incendie de Coventry à l'horizon. En septembre 1942 il a commencé ses années de lycée à County High School à Bromsgrove, école où a étudié également David Jones. Hill a participé à la production de pièces de théâtre et a trouvé un critique pour ses premiers poèmes dans son enseignant d'anglais à qui est dédié King Log , Kenneth Curtis. Entré à Keble College, Oxford en 1949, le 13 septembre 1950, ses poèmes sont lus à la BBC (Midland Poets Program). Hill reçoit son Bachelor of Arts en 1953 et l'année suivante accepte un poste à l'Université de Leeds, où il reste jusqu'en 1980. Marié à Nancy Whittaker en 1956, il passe une année dans un poste à l'Université du Michigan (Ann Arbor) en 1959-60, puis à l'Université d'Ibadan, Nigeria, en 1967. Sa collaboration avec Inga-Stina Ewbank, qui donne une traduction en vers de la pièce Brand d'Ibsen, commence en 1976. La pièce a été jouée par le National Theatre à Londres en 1978. Churchill Fellow à l'Université de Bristol en 1980, Hill a été nommé Honorary Fellow à Keble College en 1981 et Teaching Fellow à Emmanuel College, Cambridge, de 1981 à 1988. Il a donné les Clark Lectures à Trinity College, Cambridge, en 1986. Il se marie à Alice Goodman en 1987.

Confronted by Hill's best poems, a reader is at first tempted to turn away, for the intellectual difficulty of the rugged, compressed verse is more than matched by the emotional painfulness and directness of Hill's vision. Hill does not comfort nor console, and offers no dialectic of gain through loss. His subject, like his style, is difficulty: the difficulty of apprehending and accepting moral guilt, and the difficulty of being a poet when the burden of history, including poetic history, makes any prophetic stance inauthentic. [* * *] Hill dislikes his early poems . . . . "Genesis," for which he has a particular dislike, is superb in itself, a perfect "first" poem and also a clear intimation of his largest debt to Blake's vision, which is the conviction that the Creation and the Fall were the same event. . . . . . . Read in Korea, it is hard to say which of these two living British poets, R.S. Thomas and Geoffrey Hill, will prove more accessible. This paper would like to bring the two poets together without giving the impression that we are going to end with a popularity contest or a comparative survey of approving opinion. Each of them is a firmly established figure with a clearly defined opus and needs to be approached in his own right. R.S. (as he is very often called) is still alive, but his work can be considered to be virtually complete. He was born in 1913, in the English-speaking Welsh city of Cardiff of our title, but his family moved to Holyhead on Anglesey, in the far north of Wales, when he was nearly six. Later they lived in England. As an adult, he served as priest in Wales in a number of rural parishes, during which time he finally learned the Welsh language, and since 1994 he has been living in retirement in Anglesey, in a conscious return to roots.

And there I find myself hoist on my own petard, having frequently raged against the obscurantism of authors like James Joyce , but now endorsing a poet who is nearly as impenetrable at times. So, first, let me acknowledge that I am willing to forgive more from Mr. Hill because I favor his dark moral/religious/political take on modern England, than I would be from someone who was just being obscure for obscurity's sake, say Joyce or Pynchon. Second, I do think we, justifiably, tend to give poets more leeway than novelists; after all, by the very effort they have to put in to achieving a chiseled brevity they earn some right to ask a little more effort of us readers. The nearly forty poems here do not fill even eighty pages, so if you have to read them once or twice, or ten times, it doesn't seem as onerous a task as trudging through hundreds of densely printed pages of a novel. Mr. Hill's themes and methods are signaled early on, in the title of the collection and in the epigraph :

He followed an academic career, lecturing at Leeds from 1954, becoming Professor of English in 1977. He left Leeds in 1980 to taking on a fellowship at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, before moving to Boston University in the U.S.A. in 1988. He makes extensive use of thematic connection within his work. Mercian Hymns (1971) is an example of such a sequence of linked prose poems based around the story of the ancient kingdom of Mercia under King Offa, thus drawing upon his childhood memories of Worcestershire and beyond.
