The power to declare war, including the power of judging the causes of war, is fully and exclusively vested in the legislature . . . the executive has no right, in any case, to decide the question, whether there is or is not cause for declaring war." - James Madison , 1793

Dirty Tricks On Jim Hightower by John Nichols
Texas populist Jim Hightower shouldn't be giving speeches, joining demonstrations and raising money for good causes in Madison this week. He should be down in Texas running things. Or maybe in the U.S. Senate. Or maybe even campaigning for president. But politics is a nasty business. And Hightower, who will be in Madison tonight and Friday for a busy schedule of rallies, book signings and radio shows, has seen politics at its nastiest. And the nastiness cost America one of its most promising contenders. Back in 1982, Hightower was a crusading editor and all-around rabble-rouser in Austin, the Madison of Texas. Like his friends Jesse Jackson and Ed Garvey, Hightower was inspired in those dark days of Reaganism to try his hand at politics. Jackson, Garvey and Hightower recognized that the limp Democratic challenge to Reagan's right-wing policies needed to be replaced with a left-wing populist appeal. Hightower ran for the obscure job of Texas commissioner of agriculture on a visionary platform that promised to side with small farmers against corporate agribusiness, defend farm workers and protect consumers. To just about everyone's surprise, he won and, even more surprisingly, he kept his promises.

Populist Jim Hightower has long been active in Texas politics. He is a witty, no-holds-barred commentator and the host of the Austin-based, nationally syndicated "Chat 'N Chew" radio show. He has little patience for what he calls "Republicrats" or "Demopublicans." Neither liberal nor conservative, he roots himself in the populist tradition, and he loves to use humor as a political weapon. He is the author of There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road But Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos and If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote, They Would Have Given Us Candidates. www.jimhightower.com

Under The Radar
Jim Hightower is a former Texas Agriculture Commissioner and author of If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote They Would Have Given Us Candidates This is the first of three excerpts we are publishing this month from Jim Hightower's forthcoming book, Thieves In High Places Hightower's upcoming tour schedule includes stops in New York, Chicago and Kansas City.
There are three things you never want to see:
  • Water coming out of your electrical sockets.
  • Flames shooting out of your sock drawer.
  • A press release coming out of the White House that begins: "The Bush administration today announced revised standards for..."

The Bush agenda is to disunite America. It doesn’t matter “for what.” When you see that eight-word lead you just know it’s going to be yet another piece of awful news, yet another revision of the rules that’ll let yet another industry or specific corporation have a free hand to clobber us regular folks. From inaugural day forward, the Bush White House has spewed out a torrent of “revised standards,” altering the rules to allow the Powers That Be more leeway to pollute our air and water, restrict our access to health care, invade our privacy, take away our rights on the job, raid our pensions, muffle our freedom of speech, privatize our public resources ... you name it. I’ve seen a torrent like this before. I grew up just a couple of miles from where the Denison Dam backs up the Red River to form Lake Texhoma. Occasionally, we’d get heavy rains upriver, causing the lake to rise, so the engineers would open the floodgates of this mile-long dam, and oh, God, the roar! We locals would rush out to see it (watching water being one of the more exciting things to do in Smalltown, Texas, in the 1950s). I’d stand just off to the side of the discharge pipes, as wide-eyed and open-mouthed as a gap-toothed hick at his first state fair, absolutely awed by the frightening power and sheer volume of water bursting through those massive pipes.

http://members.efn.org/~chrp/hightower.htm
JIM HIGHTOWER Populist Political Sparkplug J im Hightower has been described as that rarest of species: "a visionary with horse sense and a leader with a sense of humor." Today Hightower is one of the most respected "outside Washington" leaders in the United States. Author, radio commentator and host, public speaker and political sparkplug, this Texan has spent more than two decades battling Washington and Wall Street on behalf of consumers, children, working families, environmentalists, small business and just-plain-folks. Hightower has just finished working on a new book, IF THE GODS HAD MEANT US TO VOTE THEY WOULD HAVE GIVEN US CANDIDATES, due in bookstores in January 2000. His previous book about America's class war, THERE'S NOTHING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD BUT YELLOW STRIPES AND DEAD ARMADILLOS received rave reviews. It's also the title of one of his speeches on campuses which brings home a hard-hitting message while keeping his audience doubled up with laughter. Jim Hightower's wildly entertaining and informative talks invite his audiences to address the "outsider viewpoint" that the "insider media" usually ignores or trivializes. He highlights "crime in the suites" as well as "crime in the streets" and greedhead failures as well as grassroots successes.

HIGHER EDUCATION FREE FOR ALL? newdemocracyworld.org By John Spritzler Jim Hightower is a Texan famous for his left-of-center activism and writings, including his book, If The Gods Had Meant Us To Vote They Would Have Given Us Candidates , and a just-started newsletter called The Hightower Lowdown . The last issue of the Lowdown had a good exposé of Wal-Mart's anti-working class policies. The current issue (May 2002) is headlined, "Let's make higher ed. free for all Americans" and consists almost entirely of reasons why that would be a good idea. Having read the previous Lowdown 's Wal-Mart feature I was prepared to enjoy the next issue's article on higher education, but as I read the article I realized that there was something very disturbing about it. That feeling was confirmed when I got to the passage that read: Free higher education also is a natural fit for our new global order, a fast-spinning world in which employees can forget about such old-fashioned niceties as corporate loyalty and job security, no matter how much of yourself you've dedicated to the company. Washington and Wall Street tell us that we must expect to get dumped frequently and scramble for new work, usually requiring higher skills. Okay, so in a wealthy nation like ours, which has become the world model for this new chaotic economy, let's lead the way in providing secure footing for our people by making sure that an infrastructure of free education and training is always in place. If this is the way the new world is going to be, let's adjust for that world.
