Co., Cambridge, MA. Discussion of the United States' land grant college system often focuses on the system's achievements. However, in the face of increasing production, an abundant food supply, and relatively low food prices, the question still arises, "Do the benefits of this research outweigh the costs?" Jim Hightower argues that there is reason to believe that they do not. Agricultural research has operated in a way that has benefited agribusiness yet ignored and even harmed most rural people and rural communities. Publicly supported agricultural research is heavily oriented toward the physical and biological production aspects of agriculture, giving much less funding and research personnel to the "people-oriented" aspects of agriculture. The products of this investment are more suited to the interests of agribusiness than to the interests of farmers and agricultural laborers. Research in mechanization, for example, has produced machinery too large and too expensive to be economical on most farms, while displacing agricultural labor.

INTERVIEWS WORLD MEDIA WATCH P.M. CARPENTER MAUREEN FARRELL ... FAQ Jim Hightower talks about his new book, "Thieves in High Places: They've Stolen Our Country and it's Time to Take it Back" A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW As a former statewide office holder in the Lone Star State, he well knows the Bush Cartel is nothing more than a contemporary incarnation of the Barbary Pirates. That's why he subtitled his book: " They've Stolen Our Country and It's Time to Take It Back ." To Hightower, the GOP is really the GKP, the Grand Kleptocratic Party, composed of corporate fat cats, right wing think tankers, empire builders, extremist media barons and "just plain greedheads." Of course, Hightower also uses his scalpel to lacerate Democrats who live in the shadow of the Republicans. This ignominious group of timid, reactive politicians, he calls "Wobblycrats." Hightower lost his statewide office in Texas a few years back as a result of dirty tricks carried out by Karl Rove and a rogue FBI agent. But Jim's not the kind of guy to get discouraged. He's the ultimate populist optimist. He believes in the greatness of America and its people, but he also has learned from watching the Bush Cartel at work to always keep one hand guarding his wallet. Otherwise, he knows, the "thieves in high places" will pickpocket him through tax breaks for the rich and taxpayer money spent on corporate welfare. Sound familiar?

May 16, 2004 American political commentator Jim Hightower argues that growing interest in nanotechnology could resemble the 1990s e-boom bubble, and presents a strong environmental threat potential. (thanks to Jordan) This time, before our leaders sink tons of our tax dollars in yet another high-tech, get-rich quick scam, shouldn't they ask a few pertinent questions about the price we'll pay for this so-called progress? Conscious Choice, December 2001 I am an agitator, and an agitator is the center post in a washing machine that gets the dirt out. Jim Hightower With a best-selling book and two radio shows with millions of listeners across the heartland under his belt, Jim Hightower surely counts as one of America's most influential progressive voices. He leads the charge against economic inequality, political corruption, environmental despoilment, and all manner of prejudice with hard-hitting opinionizing like this: "Some say we need a third party. I say we need a second one." And: "We ought to pass a law that says the board of directors and top management of a company that wants to build a polluting facility anything that spews or burbles would have to live within one hundred yards of that facility." And this: "If Paul Revere were to make his midnight ride now, it is not an invasion by redcoats he would warn us about, but the astonishing assault global corporate powers are making on our liberties, economic fortunes, way of life, and sovereignty." That's pretty strong stuff, especially in a political climate in which politically cautious Bill Clinton was hailed as a crusading idealist, and tepid centrist Michael Kinsley represented the left on TV's

VOL.20 NO.48 POLITICS : THE HIGHTOWER LOWDOWN
The Hightower Lowdown
BY JIM HIGHTOWER
July 27, 2001:
Clinton's Legacy
During his eight-year presidential tenure, Bill Clinton often wondered aloud what his "legacy" would be. NAFTA? The Wall Street Boom? King of soft-money fundraising? If he really wants to know, he could ask Debbie Delrio of Austin. A mother of two young boys, one 6 and the other a year old, she's a former welfare mom now being expelled from assistance, thanks to Clinton's highly ballyhooed Welfare Reform Act, which he boasted would "move America from welfare to work." It was a grand political scheme, grounded in classic Republican ideology, but while Clinton and the congress crowed about getting millions of Americans off the welfare rolls, they never wanted to talk about the "work" part of the equation ... and it's the Debbie Delrios who now are struggling to pay for the politicians' schemes. Various studies show that while about 2/3 of the welfare moms technically got "jobs," few of the jobs paid enough to make ends meet. Plus, the jobs provided no child care, no health care, or transportation to get to and from their jobs. The one mitigating provision in Clinton's welfare scheme was that it gave a temporary exemption to the disabled, the ill, and parents with young children. But now that exemption is expiring, and Debbie Delrio is one of millions of Clinton's legacies scrambling to survive. She got a job as a clerk in a boutique, but her gross pay is only $18,000 a year leaving her and her children one paycheck from poverty in high-cost Austin. Now, her child care costs are rising, which is a budget-breaker for her plus, the mall where she works is closing, so she might soon be on the street, trying to get another low-wage job at a time when the economy is tanking.

If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote They Would Have Given Us Candidates
Jim Hightower
Harpercollins (2000) BOOK DESCRIPTION
The author opines on the current political scene with humor and his own style of muckraking and agitating. If anything, in this presidential election special, he's madder than ever. In his earlier bestseller, There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road but Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos . Hightower only began to tap into the deep yearning that Americans have for a new politics that speaks to them from a real-world, kitchen-table perspective. Now, with the year 2000 being an especially significant marker for contemplating our country's direction, not only for the new year but for the new century and the new millennium, it's time for citizens to reclaim their political, economic, and cultural heritage. No one is spared in this insightful and engaging blend of horror and success stories, hard-hitting commentary, laugh-out-loud humor, useful facts, and sparkling language. An equal opportunity muckraker and conscientious agitator for "We the people," Hightower inspires us to take charge again, to build a new politics, and, together, to build a better tomorrow. Jim Hightower: Radio Populist To Be Muzzled?
By Jeff Cohen and Norman Solomon Media Beat , September 22, 1995 The most distinctive new voice on talk radio is in danger of being silenced. Populist Jim Hightower has built a following on 150 stations nationwide during the last 16 months while breaking most of the rules for talk radio hosts. Instead of shouting, he speaks with a soft Texas twang. He actually lets callers who oppose him be heard. And his barbs are not aimed at women, gays, minorities or the poor but at the rich and powerful. Other talk hosts fulminate about "welfare queens." Hightower dwells on the "welfare kings" the Fortune 500. Hightower has become talk radio's unabashed advocate for blue-collar workers, pensioners, family farmers and middle-class consumers. The real political spectrum, explains Hightower, is not right-to-left: "It's top-to-bottom, and the vast majority of people aren't even in shouting distance of the economic and political powers at the top." Although he's been likened to Will Rogers, Hightower
