WE PROTEST PACIFICA'S NATIONAL LEADERSHIP ACTIONS AND SUPPORT THE DISSENTING BOARD MEMBERS In an action reminiscent of its closing of Berkeley's KPFA in 1999, the Pacifica Foundation's national leadership is now moving against New York's WBAI. The station's managers have been fired, door locks changed in the middle of the night, staffers banned from the station and protesters arrested. Security guards have been brought in to enforce the changes imposed without warning or explanation by Pacifica's Washington, D.C.-based executive director, backed by its board leadership. Another target of the action, Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, hangs on to her job amid harassment on air and off by Pacifica's national leaders and recently installed station management in New York. Meanwhile, WBAI's newly appointed morning show host has spoken on-air in support of the Pacifica board selling off WBAI. For most of its 50-year history, Pacifica has been a public resource for the progressive community. Recently, a self-selected, unaccountable and secretive board majority has acted as if it owns Pacifica and has ruled by fiat. In the

JIM HIGHTOWER
The WTO and Globaloney
In my last book, There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road But Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos , you're allowed an epigram page in which you can kill several trees just to put a single quote on this page and I chose an old cowboy saying out of West Texas that said "Speak the truth but ride a fast horse." And that is, I think, our job, to get out to the American people because we are pretty much the last to know. The media has deliberately, I believe, tried to hide this issue from we the folks because they are conglomerates. Elsewhere around the world ... the WTO, the MAI, the NAFTA and so on are at the center of a major political discussion and we've got a phenomenon in this country where, entering the 2000 elections ... the candidates of the two parties will not address this issue. You're not going to hear George W, you're not going to hear Al Gore, you're not going to hear Bill Bradley get into any conflict at all about this process of globalization. A global corporate coup against We the People is what we're really talking about here a coup to seize power so that they might reign as sovereigns. You say "Hightower, how is it that you come to such a conclusion as that." I say, well, no less a light than Renato Ruggiero has said so. You all know Renato, don't you, a high public official? "We are writing the constitution of a single global economy," said Renato.

NEWS YOU WON'T FIND ON CNN Democracy Now! Jim Hightower on Taking Back the Country Through Democratic Struggle
Jim Hightower argues that the U.S. is ruled by “thieves of justice and liberty,” and it is time for the people to take back their nation. CLICK PLAY TO LISTEN Click Here To Download “The kleptocrats have taken over.” That is how Jim Hightower starts the introduction to latest book, Thieves In High Places: They’ve Stolen Our Country and It’s Time to Take it Back . In it, he argues that the U.S. is ruled by “thieves of justice and liberty,” and it is time for the people to take back their nation. Hightower, who describes himself as America’s #1 populist, writes: “To jettison our nation's ideals for nothing more than the further enrichment of elites is no mere shift in policy it's a moral failure, a betrayal of what the American experiment represents. A fellow came up to me recently and politely introduced himself. After only a moment of chitchat, he clutched my arm and his eyes urgently sought mine, as though he might find confirmation there of what he instinctively thought to be happening. Leaning into me, almost in a whisper he said: "They're changing America, aren't they?"

Corrections How Florida Democrats torpedoed Gore If the vice president had locked up his party's traditional base in the Sunshine State, the election wouldn't be tied up in the courts. By Jim Hightower Not all computer errors involve vote counts in Florida. Writing in Funny Times, Richard Lederer tells about a computer glitch that forced the publisher of an economics report to issue an apology to subscribers. "Instead of the figures on the sales of soybeans to foreign countries," the sheepish publisher explained, the computer printed out "the chest measurements of the Female Wrestlers Association." Hazard your own guess as to why the soybean statistician had FWA chest measurements programmed into the computer, but the lesson here is that it's not only important to get your statistics right, but also to get the right statistics. In the aftermath of this election, the media and political pros have zeroed in on one set of election figures, while totally ignoring another set that may be even more revealing about the presidential race. The national focus, of course, has been on the few-hundred-vote difference between Gore and Bush a thin divide that was breathlessly termed a "crisis" for our democracy by assorted pipe-smoking pundits. Yet these same pundits didn't give a puff about a far wider electoral divide that I think poses an actual crisis for our democracy: the more than 100 million votes that went astray on Election Day.

Former Texas agriculture commissioner, former editor of the Texas Observer and, now, former radio personality? Jim Hightower hopes not, but even he's not sure what the future holds. Officials of the ABC Radio Networks recently notified the self-described "kick-ass populist" that they were dropping his weekly talk show, "Hightower Radio," which had 1 million listeners across the country. If Hightower can't find a new syndicator, progressives will lose yet another sympathetic voice in the media. On a mild day in early September, shortly after his meeting with ABC Radio, Hightower met with Mother Jones at Las Manitas, Austin's classic Mexican eatery. Over barbacoa tacos, he spokein his distinctive drawlabout his show, Bill Clinton, and the Republicans who would be king.

Georgia counties under state of emergency for G8

    Reuters, 05.24.04, 5:12 PM ET
    By Karen Jacobs
ATLANTA, May 24 (Reuters) - A state of emergency went into effect on Monday in six Georgia coastal counties as the state prepared to host world leaders at the G-8 Summit.
Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue signed an executive order this month establishing a central command to coordinate law enforcement operations for the summit, which will be held June 8-10 on Sea Island, located about 90 miles (144 km) south of Savannah.
"The expectation is that everybody will go down there and voice their protest in a very law-abiding, peaceful manner," said Harold Melton, executive counsel to Perdue.
"Knowing the sensitivity of having the world's leaders all in place, being extra cautious given the state of the world right now, you just want to be sure that you are prepared in the event something should go wrong," he added.
The governor's order brings together a number of agencies under the authority of one office and sets up a chain of command to govern communication in case of an unexpected event.
The Group of Eight includes the United States, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada and Russia.

There is no one like jim hightower on the American scene today. jim hightower We re drawing thousands of people, almost despite our inept organizing.
    http://www.progressive.org/nov03/intv1103.html
    November 2003 Issue
There is no one like Jim Hightower on the American scene today. Clever and impassioned, this folksy populist may be the best advocate for progressive politics in the country. Hightower began as an aide to the great Texas Senator Ralph Yarborough. In 1972, Hightower founded the Agribusiness Accountability Project. Four years later, he was campaign director for Oklahoma Senator Fred Harris in that populist's Presidential run. Following Harris's defeat, Hightower became editor of The Texas Observer The Hightower Lowdown , a newsletter with more than 100,000 subscribers. He's also a best-selling author. His previous books include There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road but Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos and If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote They Would Have Given Us Candidates. His latest is Thieves in High Places: They've Stolen Our Country and It's Time to Take It Back. (In Thieves , he mentions a telling comment George W. made at a dinner of his fat cat contributors back in 2000. Said Bush: "This is an impressive crowd. The haves and the have-mores. Some call you the elite. I call you my base.") Most of all, Hightower is an agitator in the tradition of Mother Jones and Big Bill Haywood. Or think of him as Woody Guthrie without the guitar. Hightower goes from town to town, visiting union halls, walking picket lines, and entertaining activists with his humor and his bite. On what he calls his Rolling Thunder Down-Home Democracy Tour, he holds huge public festivals that feature not just political speeches but music and food and beer "to lubricate the movement," he says.
