Add to a Notebook Robert Herrick In August 1591 Robert Herrick was the seventh child and fourth son born to a London goldsmith, Nicholas, and his wife, Julian Stone Herrick. When Herrick was fourteen months old, his father died. At age 16, Herrick began a ten-year apprenticeship with his uncle. The  apprenticeship ended after only six years, and Herrick, at age twenty-two, matriculated at Saint John's College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1617. Over the next decade, Herrick became a disciple of Ben Jonson , about whom he wrote five poems. In 1623 Herrick took holy orders, and six years later, he became vicar of Dean Prior in Devonshire. His post carried a term for a total of thirty-one years, but during the Great Rebellion in 1647, he was removed from his position because of his Royalist sympathies. Following the restoration of Charles II, Herrick was reinstated at Dean Prior where he resided from 1662 until his death in October 1674. He never married, and many of the women mentioned in his poems are thought to have been fictional. His principal work is Hesperides; or, the Works Both Human and Divine of Robert Herrick, Esq.

Robert Herrick
Robert Herrick worked initially for his uncle as an apprentice goldsmith in London before attending Cambridge. In 1623, he was ordained as a priest and acted as chaplain to the Duke of Buckingham on the expedition to La Rochelle. In 1629 he was appointed to the living of Dean Prior in Devon by Charles I, but was ejected in 1647 under the Commonwealth for refusing the Solemn League and Covenant. He was restored to the living in 1662 after the Restoration of the monarchy, having lived in the meantime in Westminster. Herrick wrote some 2,500 poems, publishing his major collection, Hesperides , in 1648, which contains about half of them. His poetry shows considerable diversity of form, with imitations of the Roman poets Horace and Catallus, epistles, epigrams, love poetry, and folk songs, many of which were later set to music. Herrick was a consummate craftsman and "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying" are his best-known lines. He died a bachelor at the age of 83. Robert Herrick
Robert Herrick was born in London in 1591. The son of a goldsmith, he was apprenticed to his uncle, also a goldsmith but went to Trinity Hall, Cambridge at the age of 22. He graduated in 1620 and took holy orders and commenced duties in a parish in Devon. As a Royalist he was forced to give up the parish in 1647. He was restored to it in 1662 and died in 1674. Herrick wrote on a number of themes. Often, and most famously, on the attributes of young women but also on rural life, religious themes and in his later life on his approaching death. Many of his poems also concern themselves with 'making much of time' or carpe diem, sieze the day as made famous in the film Dead Poet's Society. Here you will find a large selection of his work, including many of the poems to Julia and, importantly, his finest work: Corinna's Going a Maying.

Robert Herrick (1591-1674)
"Compared to such contemporaries as John Donne and George Herbert, Herrick seems light and tripping, going out of his way to demonstrate no very complex philosophical thought or religious passion (though his devotional verses are suitably austere), and never writing a love poem that speaks profoundly or intimately of the beloved." GET up, get up for shame! The blooming morn
Upon her wings presents the god unshorn.
See how Aurora throws her fair
Fresh-quilted colours through the air:
Get up, sweet slug-a-bed, and see
The dew bespangling herb and tree!
Above an hour since, yet you not drest;
Nay! not so much as out of bed?
When all the birds have matins said
Nay, profanation, to keep in,
Whereas a thousand virgins on this day Spring sooner than the lark, to fetch in May. Rise and put on your foliage, and be seen To come forth, like the spring-time, fresh and green, And sweet as Flora. Take no care For jewels for your gown or hair: Fear not; the leaves will strew Gems in abundance upon you: Besides, the childhood of the day has kept, Against you come, some orient pearls unwept. Come, and receive them while the light Hangs on the dew-locks of the night: And Titan on the eastern hill Retires himself, or else stands still

    CHAPTER I
FROM time to time the door opened to admit some tardy person. Then the May sunlight without flooded the dim, long hall with a sudden radiance, even to the arched recess in the rear, where the coffin was placed. The late-comers sank into the crowd of black-coated men, who filled the hall to the broad stairs. Most of these were plainly dressed, with thick, grizzled beards and lined faces: they were old hands from the Bridge Works on the West Side, where they had worked many years for Powers Jackson. In the parlors at the left of the hall there were more women than men, and more fashionable clothes than in the hall. But the faces were scarcely less rugged and lined; for these friends of the old man who lay in the coffin were mostly life-worn and gnarled, like himself. Their luxuries had not sufficed to hide the scars of the battles they had waged with fortune. When the minister ceased praying, the men and the women in the warm, flower-scented rooms moved gratefully, trying to get easier positions for their cramped bodies. Some members of a church choir, stationed at the landing on the stairs, began to sing. Once more the

  • The author of "The Master of the Inn" having received many inquiries as to what foundation in fact this tale has wishes to state explicitly that both incidents and persons are purely imaginary, and that so far as he is aware there is neither Master nor Inn in existence. Chicago, Ills., 12 May, 1909.
    THE MASTER OF THE INN
    I
IT was a plain brick house, three full stories, with four broad chimneys, and overhanging eaves. The tradition was that it had been a colonial taverna dot among the fir-covered northern hills on the climbing post-road into Canada. The village scattered along the road below the inn was called Albanyand soon forgotten when the railroad sought an opening through a valley less rugged, eight miles to the west. Rather more than thirty years ago nevertheless an ever-widening stream of humanity mounted the winding road from White River and passed through the doors of the Inn, seeking life. . . . That first summer the Doctor brought with him Sam, the Chinaman, whom we all came to know and love, and also a young man, who loafed much while the Doctor worked, and occasionally fished. This was John Herringnow a famous architectand it was from his designs, sketched those first idle summer days, that were built all the additions to the simple old housethe two low wings in the rear for the "cells," with the Italian garden between them; the marble seat curving around the pool that joined the wings on the west; also the
