Aquí sólo poetas de este mundo
Miguel Hernández (1910-1942)
"Miguel de España, estrella
de tierras arrasadas,
no te olvido, hijo mío!
pero aprendí la vida
con tu muerte:
mis ojos se velaron apenas,
y encontré en mí
no el llanto,
sino las armas
inexorables!
Espéralas! Espérame!"
Pablo Neruda
Alimentando lluvias, caracolas

11. Miguel Hernandez, "Lullaby Of The Onion"
Translation by Robert Bly.
http://www.worldbank.org/poverty/povlit/povlit2p18.htm
Miguel Hernandez, "Lullaby of the Onion"
Born into a peasant family in Spain in 1910, Miguel Hernandez had little formal education but succeeded in publishing his first book of poems by age 23. Arrested several times for opposing Franco, he died at 31 of tuberculosis contracted in prison. In "Lullaby of the Onion," he reflects on the present condition of and future prospects for his baby son. The poem was written after he received a letter from his wife stating that she had only bread and onions to eat.
Lullaby of the Onion Lines for his son, after receiving a letter
from his wife in which she said that all
she had to eat was bread and onions. An onion is frost
shut in and poor.
Frost of your days
and of my nights.
Hunger and onion,
black ice and frost
huge and round.
My son is lying now
in the cradle of hunger. The blood of an onion is what he lives on. But it is your blood, with sugar on it like frost, onion and hunger.

15. Miguel Hernandez
Cuestionario evaluativo final.
http://www.gened.arizona.edu/polsani/hernandez.htm

Washington Post Book World Three poems from
Translated by Ted Genoways
Sitting upon the Dead Sitting upon the dead
fallen silent these two months,
I kiss empty shoes
and make an angry fist
with the heart's hand
and the soul that drives it. That my voice climb the mountains
and descend to earth as thunder:
this what my throat begs
now and forever. Come close to my clamor, people fed from the same breast, tree whose roots keep me in prison, because I am here to love you and I am here to defend you with my blood and with my mouth like two faithful rifles. If I came out of the earth, if I was born from a womb, pitiful and poor, it was only that I would become the nightingale of the pitiful, echo of bad luck, to sing and to repeat to those who must hear me everything of pain, everything of poverty, everything of earth. Yesterday the people woke stripped and with nothing to cover themselves, hungry and with nothing to eat, and now today has dawned justly hateful and justly bloody. In their hands the rifles long to become lions to finish with ferocity those who have been so many times ferocious.
