Herbert George Wells, 1866-1946 Herbert George Wells was the son of a shopkeeper and first worked as a draper's asistant. He later qualified as a teacher, studied hard at night school and took a degree in science. He settled in London and in 1891 he married his cousin Isabel and continued his career as a teacher in a correspondence college. In 1895 Wells left Isabel for one of his brightest students, Amy Catherine, whom he married in 1895. Wells lived through World War II in his house on Regent's Park, refusing to let the blitz drive him out of London. In 1945, his last book expressed real pessimism about mankind's future prospects. Wells died in London on August 13. 1946. Click on the cart to download your book / Haz clic en el carrito para descargar tu libro.

Science-fiction This famous novel is about an invasion of Martians. The story appeared at a time when the discovery of Martian "canals" arose speculations that there could be life on the Red Planet. The narrator in this book is an unnamed "philosophical writer" who tells about events that happened six years earlier. Martian cylinders land on earth outside London and the invaders, who have a "roundish bulk with tentacles" start to vaporize humans. The Martians build walking tripods which ruin towns. Panic spreads, London is evacuated. Martians release poisonous black smoke. Orson Welles' Mercury Theater radio broadcast, based on

Wells, Herbert George (1866-1946)
English writer whose science fiction stories played an important role in influencing popular conceptions of the nature of extraterrestrial life. The first novelist of his genre to receive a thorough scientific education, he held a bachelor's degree from the Normal School of Science (later renamed the Royal College of Science) in London, and had been tutored by none other than the biologist Thomas Huxley , famed for his epic public encounter with the creationist Bishop Samuel ("Soapy Sam") Wilberforce at Oxford in 1860. Huxley had been a close friend of Charles Darwin . Now, following Charles's death in 1882-the year that Wells first began attending Huxley's lectures-he was the new chief standard-bearer for Darwinism. Wells, therefore, could not have found a better teacher from whom to learn about the theory of evolution and all that it implied.
For Wells, as for his contemporaries, evolutionary theory was at the hub of biological thinking. It dominated much of what he wrote, both in the form of fiction and science journalism. In essay after essay, especially in his first decade of professional writing from 1887 to 1896, he attacked the traditional anthropocentric viewpoint that man was somehow special and that nature was teleologically oriented toward our species. What was

June 2 - July 8, 2000
Tues-Fri: 9:30 AM-5:30 PM

Fassbender Gallery 835 West Washington Blvd. Chicago, Illinois 60607 Telephone: 312/ 666-4302 http://www.fassbendergallery.com There is motion; but nothing moves. And change; yet the objects stand still in time. There is form, and mass; and the suggestion of form, a visibly defined absence of mass. Here, shadow and object meld. Above all, there is a deep, moving inspiration, expressed in faultless technique. Herbert George's current exhibition of sculpture and sculptural assemblage, "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures," is scheduled to run from June 2 through July 8, 2000 at Fassbender Gallery, 835 West Washington in Chicago's West Loop Gate Gallery District. "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures" rewards each repeated visit. The work in "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures" plays with the shifting perspective between a walking viewer and the sculptural object, and does this beyond the shaped masses, angles and coherent flow of the object's own physical form. As one circles a piece, one feels a cinematographic effect of sequence the dynamic of light and perspective a logic of perception which cyclically ends wherever a viewer first started, and in this process each sculpture permutes its identity and effects.

MASONIC BIOGRAPHIES FAMOUS FREEMASONS Herbert George Wells September 21, 1866- August 13, 1946 An early science fiction writer, Wells also wrote historical and scientific texts, and much fiction. Author of "The Rediscovery of the Unique", published in The Fortnightly Review (1891), Wells' early novels include The Time Machine The Invisible Man The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896) and The War of the Worlds His Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought The Discovery of the Future (1902) and Mankind in the Making (1903) lead to his membership in the Fabian Society. Leaving the society in 1908, and later disillusioned by what he saw in Russia, Wells published The Outline of History in 1920. His novel The Shape of Things to Come Conspiracy theorists have labelled Wells both an illuminati and freemason because of his 1929 book Imperialism and the open conspiracy. Although he parodied Freemasonry in The Inexperienced Ghost and his name has appeared in several online lists of famous freemasons, there does not appear to be any justification for claiming him as a freemason.
