His father worked as agardener shopkeeper and cricketer his mother as a maid and houskeeper. His carrer as an author was fostered by an unfortunate accident as a child. He broke his leg and spent the mandatory rest period reading every book which he could find. Wells was awarded a scholarchip and furthered his education at the Normal School of science. It was the Normal School that Wells came under the wing of the famous biologist Thomas H. Huxley. Wells‘ „science fiction“ was clearly influenced by his studies at the Normal School and his interest in biology. He worked in poverty in London at a crammer while experimenting in journalism and stories, and published textbooks on biology and physiography. H.G. Wells gained fame with his first major fiction work: The Time Machine in 1895. Soon after the publication of this book, Wells followed with The Island of Dr. Moreau (1895), The Invisible Man, and perhaps his most popular work: The War of the Worlds published in 1898.

Wells, Herbert George Biography
Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian, whose science fiction stories have been filmed many times. Wells's best known works are THE TIME MACHINE (1895), one of the first modern science fiction stories, THE INVISIBLE MAN (1897), and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1898). Wells wrote over a hundred of books, about fifty of them novels. "No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their affairs they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water." (from War of the Worlds Along with George Orwell's Nineteen-Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World , which was a pessimistic answer to scientific optimism, Wells's novels are among the classics of science-fiction. Later Wells's romantic and enthusiastic conception of technology turned more doubtful. His bitter side is seen early in the novel BOON (1915), which was a parody of Henry James Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley, Kent. His father was a shopkeeper and a professional cricketer until he broke his leg. In his early childhood Wells developed love for literature. His mother served from time to time as a housekeeper at the nearby estate of Uppark, and young Wells studied books in the library secretly. When his father's business failed, Wells was apprenticed like his brothers to a draper. He spent the years between 1880 and 1883 in Windsor and Southsea, and later recorded them in KIPPS (1905). In the story Arthur Kipps is raised by his aunt and uncle. Kipps is also apprenticed to a draper. After learning that he has been left a fortune, Kipps enters the upper-class society, which Wells describes with sharp social criticism.

HERBERT GEORGE WELLS
English author (1866-1946)
Biography:
Herbert George Wells, like Charles Dickens , was born in a modest bakground. As a self-taught student he attended the Sciences Faculty at University of London, where he met T. Huxley, Darwin's friend. After teaching and collaborating in some magazines, Wells began publishing his science-fiction books.
His first writings are scientific interviews to amuse his students. In 1895, he published a short tale: The Time Machine , followed by a series of novels and short stories inspired in Jules Verne, but rather more scientific than his.
The War of the Worlds The Invisible Man (1897) and The first Men in the Moon (1901) are premonitory views of a total world war and the conquest of the Space to reach hegemony. His works deal with the essential problems of men and women at the end of the 19th century.
Wells was considered a true prophet by his contemporaries, although they forgot to critisize his mistaken judgements. Wells is, nonetheless, one of the greatest English writers.
The Adventures of the Invisible Man , 1897, adapted in several films and TV series, were really worshipped.
