English Literature Fonds/ Collections Inventory to the Sir Herbert Edward Read fonds prepared by the staff of Special Collections, 1986. SC 100 Title Sir Herbert Edward Read fonds.1918-1965. Extent 4 m of textual records. Biographical Sketch Sir Herbert Edward Read was a poet, art critic and champion of modern art in Britain, and produced approximately 1,150 titles on a broad range of topics. His 80 monographs include 26 on art and artists; 14 literary criticisms; 13 collections of poetry; 10 on politics, primarily on anarchism; 7 "belles lettres" and biography; 5 on education, most notably "Education Through Art"; and 5 autobiographies. Scope and Content The fonds consists primarily of correspondence with many individuals, including Richard Aldington, Wilfred R. Childe, Alex Comfort, Edward Dahlberg, Bonamy and Valentine Dobree, T.S. Eliot, Naum Gabo, Rayner Heppenstall, Barbara Hepworth, David Jones, Jacob Kramer, Percy W. Lewis, Henry Miller, Henry Moore, Frank Morley, Edwin Muir, Ben Nicholson, Alfred R. Orage, Robert Payne, Kathleen Raine, Stephen Spender, Adrian Stokes, Allen Tate, Arthur W. Papers include correspondence relating to his non-payment of the General Unemployment Levy, 1932-1935; New Zealand Timber Workers' Union records; reminiscences of Mount Eden Prison; eight volumes of newspaper clippings. The collection also includes: Efford, Lincoln Arthur Winstone, 1908?-1962. Papers , 1943-1950. 26 items. The papers include 1943 election ephemera and letters to H.E. Thatcher concerning pacifism and social reform. Herbert Thatcher was a pacifist and union official who served a three months' prison sentence for an act of civil protest during the Depression. Lincoln Efford was a socialist and pacifist who conducted a negotiated peace campaign in Christchurch East, 1943. The William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections Back to P Index Palmer, Herbert Edward, 1880-1961 Letter to L.A.G. Strong / by Herbert Edward Palmer. [194-?] Herbert Edward Palmer, lyric and narrative poet and critic, was born in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire on 10 February 1880 and educated at Birmingham and later Bonn Universities. For many years he worked as a schoolmaster. In 1921 he relinquished his post as English master at St. Alban's school to devote himself to a full-time literary career. His Collected Poems were published in 1933. He published an autobiography, The Mistletoe Child, in 1935. Palmer died on 17 May 1961. The recipient of his letter was Leonard Alfred George Strong (1896-1958), author, journalist, and a director of Methuen Ltd. from 1938 to 1958. In the letter Palmer makes an assessment of his own poetry. Title based on content of item. Provenance and date of acquisition are not known.
