World Civilizations The Reader's Companion to American History HENRY, PATRICK Yet after the war Henry urged restoration of the property and rights of Loyalists, arguing that they would make good citizens of the new Republic, and he bitterly opposed the Constitution as a threat to the liberties of the people and the rights of the states. Actually, Henry had seen the union of the rebellious colonies as a marriage of convenience, a kind of defensive alliance to protect already achieved liberties. He believed that once the war had been won a strong central authority was no longer needed. Times were hard in Virginia and he favored tax cuts and the issuance of paper money by the state as a way of providing relief for debtors and small farmers, policies that Virginia nationalists like James Madison and George Washington opposed. When their concerns resulted in the calling of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Henry was elected as a delegate, but he refused to serve. After the new Constitution was published he dismissed it as an affront to "the spirit of republicanism" and the "genius of democracy." The preamble, beginning "We the people

We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it. It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Patrick Henry Chapter Martinsville, Virginia established 1905 2-090 VA - Disstrict VII Chapter History In June of 1779, Patrick Henry and his family arrived in Leatherwood in Henry County, Virginia. He represented Henry County in the House of Delegates, where he served numerous terms and later became Virginia's first governor. On January 1, 1785, Henry was given a Commonwealth Grant for 2,125 acres of land in Henry County. The thirteen women who met and organized the Patrick Henry Chapter, DAR on June 15, 1905, were aware of the rich heritage in Martinsville and Henry County. They agreed unanimously to name the chapter "Patrick Henry" because of his many ties with the state and the area. In 1922, the Patrick Henry Chapter erected a monument on land that was once Patrick Henry's farm. That portion of the land was deeded to the Virginia DAR. In 1976, a historical marker denoting the former homeland of Patrick Henry was placed on U. S. 58 East by the Highway Department at a cost of $475 which chapter members raised. Each year the chapter gives a scholarship to a student at Patrick Henry Community College.
