Henry Sidgwick, 1838-1900
Henry Sidgwick was born in the year after Queen Victoria took the throne, and died six months before she died. Perhaps it was a fateful coincidence. In many ways, Henry Sidgwick was the quintessential Victorian, the perfect 19th Century English academic. Educated at Rugby, Sidgwick entered Trinity College, Cambridge , in 1855. Graduating in Classics and Mathematics in 1859, laden with prizes, Sidgwick was immediately elected Fellow of Trinity. He was to remain a teacher at Trinity College until his death. (although he temporarily lost his fellowship in 1869 over his refusal to make a religious oath; he was re-elected in 1885). Throughout the 1860s, he would undertake the study of philosophy, religious history and ethics. The outcome of his efforts was his famous Methods of Ethics (1874). Sidgwick was particularly influenced by the thought of John Stuart Mill . In this famous book, he attempted to reconcile Mill's utilitarian philosophy with the "intuitional" (i.e. "duty") theory of ethics. However, he recognized that one could not, a priori , reconcile either of these with the principle of self-interest. Sidgwick also proposed that the appropriate measure of social welfare was average utility multiplied by the size of the population. This solution was much applauded by

Editor's note: The majority of the text of the following article is derived from the writing, Albert Henry Krehbiel (1873-1945): American Impressionist, Muralist, and Art Educator Albert Henry Krehbiel (1873-1945): American Impressionist, Muralist and Art Educator By Donald T. Ryan, Jr. A lbert Henry Krehbiel, one of seven children, was born in Denmark, Iowa, in 1873 and moved with his family to Newton, Kansas, in 1879, where his father was a prosperous carriage and buggy maker and, later, a co-founder of Bethel College. Krehbiel graduated from Bethel College in Newton and studied for a year at the School of Design and Painting in Topeka, Kansas. In 1898, Art Institute of Chicago Director William Merchant Richardson French discovered Krehbiel's talents while on a lecture tour in Newton and encouraged him to further pursue a career in art by enrolling at The Art Institute. Heeding Mr. French's advice, he labored for the next four years at The Art Institute as a student and, in the fifth year, as a drawing instructor. In 1902, Krehbiel was granted an American Traveling Scholarship by The Art Institute to study abroad. During his last year abroad, Krehbiel made a walking and painting tour of Spain and, upon receiving special permission from Museo Del Prado in Madrid, he created several studies first hand of works done by Diego Velazquez. (Nine of the studies were later shown at The Art Institute of Chicago's

Henry Clay Profile: Statesman/Presidential Candidate Birthdate: April 12, 1777 Died: June 29, 1852 Birthplace: Hanover Co., Va. Credits: (See Below) Biographical Notes Clay, Henry (1777-1852), American statesman, who was secretary of state under John Quincy Adams and an unsuccessful candidate for the presidency in 1824, 1832, and 1844. He was one of the most popular and influential political leaders in American history. His genius in the art of compromise three times resolved bitter political conflicts that threatened to tear the nation apart, winning him the title The Great Pacificator. Clay was born on April 12, 1777, in Hanover County, Virginia, to a middle-class family. After studying for the bar with the eminent George Wythe, Clay, at the age of 20, moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where he developed a thriving practice. He was blessed with a quick mind, a flair for oratory, and an ability to charm both sexes with his easy, attractive manner. That he loved to drink and gamble was no drawback in an age that admired both vices. Clay, ambitious for worldly success, married into a wealthy and socially prominent family and soon gained entry into Kentucky's most influential circles. While still in his 20s, he was elected to the state legislature, in which he served for six years, until 1809. Clay established his great reputation in the United States House of Representatives, where he served intermittently from 1811 to 1825. In his first term, he became one of the leading "War Hawks"—the young men whose clamor for hostilities with England helped bring about the War of 1812. Clay was selected as one of the commissioners who in 1814 negotiated the Treaty of Ghent, ending that war.

Blick 1 (Überlegungen zu: Henry David Thoreau, Walden oder Leben in den Wäldern. Aus dem Amerikanischen von Emma Emmerich und Tatjana Fischer. Vorwort von Walter E. Richartz.
ISBN 3-257-20019-6. 341 Seiten. Diogenes Taschenbuch 20019

Henry Fitzsimon
(Fitz Simon). Jesuit , b. 1566 (or 1569), in Dublin, Ireland; d. 29 Nov., 1643 (or 1645), probably at Kilkenny. He was educated a Protestant at Oxford (Hart Hall, and perhaps Christ Church), 1583-1587. Going thence to the University of Paris, he became a zealous protagonist of Protestantism , "with the firm intention to have died for it, if need had been". But having engaged in controversy with "an owld English Jesuit , Father Thomas Darbishire, to my happiness I was overcome. " Having embraced Catholicism, he visited Rome and Flanders, where in 1592, he "elected to militate under the Jesuits' standard, because they do most impugn the impiety of heretics". In 1595 there was a call for Jesuit laborers for Ireland, which had been deprived of them for ten years. He at once offered himself for the post of danger, and he shares with Father Archer the honour of having refound that mission on a basis that proved permanent amid innumerable dangers and trials. Keeping chiefly to Dublin and Drogheda, he was wondrously successful in reconciling Protestants , and he loudly and persistently challenged the chief Anglican divines to disputation. With the same fighting spirit, he laughed at his capture in 1600. "Now", he said, "my adversaries cannot say that they do not know where to find me", and he would shout his challenges from his prison window at every passing parson. But his opponents, James Ussher, Meredith Hanmer, and John Rider, in spite of their professions, carefully avoided coming to close quarters with their redoubtable adversary.

Henry doubtful for Moscow showdown
Henry is a contender for FIFA's world player of the year award. Story Tools LONDON, England Arsenal face a nervous wait ahead of Wednesday's decisive Champions League clash with Lokomotiv Moscow at Highbury as Thierry Henry struggles to shake off a knee injury. The Gunners, who need to beat the Russian champions to reach the knockout stages, badly missed the French striker's creativity in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Leicester. But Arsenal will have midfielder Patrick Vieira back in the side after coach Arsene Wenger chose to rest his captain at the weekend. Henry, nominated last week for FIFA's World Player of the Year award, was the inspiration behind Arsenal's 5-1 win in their last Champions League match. That result re-ignited their campaign after picking up one point from their first three games. "It has come on slowly," Wenger said of Henry's injury. "There was a bit against Inter, but it's become worse with every game since then and then he had really pain last Friday and we decided to rest him at Leicester.
