122. A History Of Photography, By Robert Leggat: TALBOT, William Henry Fox
Detailed biography from A History of Photography, by Robert Leggat.
http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/talbot.htm
TALBOT, William Henry Fox b. 11 February 1800; d. 17 September 1877 His signature is Henry Talbot, and though he is said to have disliked being called Fox Talbot, that name has stuck. Though Fox Talbot was not the first to produce photographs, he made a major contribution to the photographic process as we know it today. Talbot studied the classics and mathematics at Cambridge, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1822, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1832. He was also an MP, Biblical scholar, a Botanist and Assyriologist, making a contribution to the deciphering of cuneiform inscriptions brought to England from Nineveh. Though some of his pictures show a measure of artistic taste, it was his inability to draw which caused him to experiment with a mechanical method of capturing and retaining an image. Talbot attempted to draw with the aid of both a camera obscura and a camera lucida when producing his sketches, one of which was Villa Melzi. Later he wrote:

127. William Henry Jackson
Biographical page presented by the National Park Service.
http://www.nps.gov/scbl/whj.htm
William Henry Jackson
Frontier Photographer and Artist William Henry Jackson was an early photographer of the American West, as well as an accomplished artist. He traveled the Oregon-California Trail in 1866 and 1867, and later in life painted a series of watercolors based on his experiences. Scotts Bluff National Monument houses 63 of Jackson's historic paintings and many are on display in the monument's museum.
The Life of William Henry Jackson - 1843-1942
Born in Keeseville, New York, on April 4, 1843, William Henry Jackson was a self-taught artist who, at the age of 15, was working as a retoucher in a photographer's studio. He was successful in this pursuit and later moved to a more prosperous studio in Rutland, Vermont. He honed his artist's skills with the retouching work, but also learned a great deal about the young art of photography, a skill that would stand him in good stead later in life. In 1860, with the onset of the Civil War, Jackson enlisted in the Union Army. His unit spent most of its time on garrison duty. Though present at the battle of Gettysburg, he was stationed in the rear areas guarding supply trains and saw no action. Mustered out in 1863, he returned to Vermont where he went to work in Style's Photographic Gallery in Burlington.

Review Summary
M. Schreiner, Resident Henry V Scholar
This was Kenneth Branagh's first Shakespeare movie, a very successful war movie. Young King Henry V, having recently assumed the throne of England, is urged by the church to claim the crown of France. The French Dauphin sends him an insult, so he decides to go to war. he proves himself to be a brave and forthright leader, leaving the irresponsibilities of his youth behind, and leading the English to great victories at Harfleur and Agincourt. He also successfully woos the Princess of France. Really good and bloody battle scene.

Blessed Henry Suso
(Also called Amandus , a name adopted in his writings). German mystic, born at Constance on 21 March, about 1295; died at Ulm, 25 January, 1366; declared Blessed in 1831 by Gregory XVI , who assigned his feast in the Dominican Order to 2 March. HIS LIFE Constance , where he made his preparatory, philosophical, and theological studies. From 1324 to 1327 he took a supplementary course in theology in the Dominican studium generale at Cologne, where he sat at the feet of Johann Eckhart, "the Master", and probably at the side of Tauler, both celebrated mystics. Returning to Constance , he was appointed to the office of lector, from which he seems to have been removed some time between 1329 and 1334. In the latter year he began his apostolic career. About 1343 he was elected prior of a convent, probably at Diessenhofen. Five years later he was sent from Constance to Ulrn where he remained until his death. Suso's life as a mystic began in his eighteenth year, when giving up his careless habits of the five preceding years, he made himself "the Servant of the Eternal Wisdom", which he identified with the Divine essence and, in a concrete form, with the personal Eternal Wisdom made man. Henceforth a burning love for the Eternal Wisdom dominated his thoughts and controlled his actions. He had frequent visions and ecstasies, practised severe austerities (which he prudently moderated in maturer years), and bore with rare patience corporal afflictions, bitter persecutions and grievous calumnies.

131. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Biography.
http://www.auburn.edu/~vestmon/longfellow_bio.html
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Biography
written by Roberto Rabe Probably the best loved of American poets the world over is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Many of his lines are as familiar to us as rhymes from Mother Goose or the words of nursery songs learned in early childhood. Like these rhymes and melodies, they remain in the memory and accompany us through life. There are two reasons for the popularity and significance of Longfellow's poetry. First, he had the gift of easy rhyme. He wrote poetry as a bird sings, with natural grace and melody. Read or heard once or twice, his rhyme and meters cling to the mind long after the sense may be forgotten. Second, Longfellow wrote on obvious themes which appeal to all kinds of people. His poems are easily understood; they sing their way into the consciousness of those who read them. Above all, there is a joyousness in them, a spirit of optimism and faith in the goodness of life which evokes immediate response in the emotions of his readers. Americans owe a great debt to Longfellow because he was among the first of American writers to use native themes. He wrote about the American scene and landscape, the American Indian ('Song of Hiawatha'), and American history and tradition ('The Courtship of Miles Standish', 'Evangeline'). At the beginning of the 19th century, America was a stumbling babe as far as a culture of its own was concerned. The people of America had spent their years and their energies in carving a habitation out of the wilderness and in fighting for independence. Literature, art, and music came mainly from Europe and especially from England. Nothing was considered worthy of attention unless it came from Europe.

A Study of Twentieth Century Multiplicity
Even though Henry Adams lamented that his education failed to prepare him for the trials of the twentieth century, there still may be aspects of his nineteenth century education that elude our own twentieth century schooling. In order to fill those gaps, this page aims at providing a helpful guide and primer for Adams' numerous allusions and references. The complete e-text of The Education of Henry Adams is available on-line from the American Studies Program at the University of Virginia. Other helpful links include a chronology of his life as well as an on-line version of his novel, Democracy . 135. THE INTERNATIONAL DISCOGRAPHY OF THE AMERICAN NEW WAVE By Henry Weld

THE INTERNATIONAL DISCOGRAPHY
OF THE AMERICAN NEW WAVE
VOLUME 3
Hi and welcome to the US punk discography. Firstly my apologies to those who tried to find this throughout 2000 when the server it previously sat on was functionally dead. Many, many thanks to Justin who has offered to house this at CollectorScum.com for the forseeable future and is also doing a lot of work with the web side of things - spending many hours uploading sleeve scans for one thing. The one thing this discography needs now is annotation, just so you don't see something listed in here, run off and spend a week's wages on eBay, only to find it is mediocre new wave. I'm not sure of the best mechanism to do this - maybe email short pithy descriptions to me and I'll eventually incorporate them.
Inspiration
Without doubt the most amazing book I own is B. George and Martha DeFoe's International Discography of the New Wave Volume 1982/83, usually just referred to as Volume (or the Bible in some households). That they were able to compile such an incredible discography in virtual real time (ie as it happened) on a computer that while it may have been advanced for the time was, let's not kid about it, incredibly primitive, verges on the unbelievable. Yet they did it and generations of record collectors tips their collective hat to them. There are mistakes and omissions though, and bands are included that have no place (Haircut 100 anybody?). So, following on from the Texas discography that Paul Routenberg and I compiled I started on Ohio and then everywhere else in the states.

Henry Conwell
Second Bishop of Philadelphia, U.S.A., b. at Moneymore, County Derry, Ireland, in 1745; d. at Philadelphia, 22 April, 1842. After the death of Bishop Egan, in 1814, the Bishopric of Philadelphia was offered successively to the Rev. Ambrose Marechal and to the Very Rev. Louis de Barth, the administrator, but both these clergymen, deterred by the contumacious attitude of the trustees of St. Mary's church, returned the Bulls; whereupon the Holy See Holy See appointed an administrator and summoned the bishop to Rome. His explanations were pronounced unsatisfactory and he was forbidden to return to his see. He did return to Philadelphia and received permission to perform episcopal functions, without interfering in matters of administration. In 1830 Francis Patrick Kenrick arrived as coadjutor and administrator, and Bishop Conwell spent his remaining years in seclusion and prayer. JAMES F. LOUGHLIN

Henry Simmons is becoming a regular on 'NYPD Blue'
By ALLAN JOHNSON
The Chicago Tribune Henry Simmons has made quite an impression since his introduction on ABC's "NPYD Blue" several weeks ago some of it coming in the 15th Squad's locker room. There has been more than one occasion when Simmons, as young detective Baldwin Jones, has stripped to reveal a well-toned torso on his 6 foot, 4 inch frame. Jones, who is a runner on the series, seems to have undressed in the locker room more than any of the other cops. And there's more to come, according to the 29-year-old actor. "I'm sure by the end of the season it will be bare butt," he reveals, adding that co-creator "David (Milch) is not ashamed, as he says, to use whatever we have here." But Simmons, whose character has become a commanding addition to the series, hastens to add that he doesn't feel as if he's being exploited. He realizes "if that (beefcake shots) is something that pulls (viewers) to the show, I think it's great. But I'm very confident that the story and the writing itself are what will keep people.

Henry Cowell

Henry Cowell
A tireless musical explorer and inventor, Cowell was born 11 March 1897 in Menlo Park, California, where he grew up surrounded by a wide variety of Oriental musical traditions, his father's Irish folk heritage, and his mother's Midwestern folktunes. Already composing in his early teens, Cowell began formal training at age 16 with Charles Seeger at the University of California. Further studies focused primarily on world music cultures. His use of varied sound materials, experimental compositional procedures, and a rich palette colored by multiple non-European and folk influences revolutionized American music and popularized, most notably, the tone cluster as an element in compositional design. In addition to tone clusters evident in such works as Advertisement and Tiger , Cowell experimented with the "string piano" in works like The Aeolian Harp and The Banshee where strings are strummed or plucked inside the piano. Studies of the musical cultures of Africa, Java, and North and South India enabled Cowell to stretch and redefine Western notions of melody and rhythm; mastery of the gamelan and the theory of gamelan composition led to further explorations with exotic instruments and percussion. Later, Cowell developed the concept of indeterminancy or "elastic form" in works like the Mosaic Quartet (where performers determine the order and alternation of movements).

Silk and Satin
Images of romance and gaiety abound in the art of the 18th century through the works of Watteau, Boucher and Fragonard. The idle rich, dressed in silks and satins, were captured in their beautifully groomed gardens or elegant interiors in situations that captured the imagination with stories of love and romance.
Many of the late 19th century artists looked back to the 18th century with enthrallment. Artists like Charles Soulacroix, Vittorio Reggianini, Maurice Leloir, Edouard Toudouze, Jean Meissonier, Marcus Stone, Johann Hamza, Luis Jiminez y Aranda and Henry Victor Lesur, who came from diverse cultural backgrounds, were among the many artists who chose to paint these beautifully detailed costume paintings. The artist Alfred Stevens once remarked that: the public are attracted to costume subjects in the same way that they fall in love with the fancy dress of a masked ball.
