Hemingway, Ernest A Clean, Well-lighted Place
Genre Short Story (4 pp. in alternate source) Keywords Aging Depression Loneliness Suicide Summary This is another of Hemingway's dense vignettes, filled with nuance but spare in style. The anecdote revolves around the difference between a clean, bright cafe and a dark, not-so-clean, bar as a place for lonely men to spend the long, sleepless nights. Two waiters discuss a lingering patron in a cafe who overstays his welcome as the night wears on. The old man gets quietly drunk each night; just last week he tried to kill himself, but was rescued. Tonight he tries to pass the night in a clean, well-lighted place. The young waiter, impatient, to get home to his wife, does not comprehend the importance of this place to this old man's survival. The older waiter, who does understand, walks into the night himself, unable to find his own clean, well-lighted place in which to pass a lonely and sleepless night.

Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, July 21, 1898, the son of a doctor. He became a reporter in Kansas City after leaving school and volunteered on ambulance duty in Italy in World War I, where he was wounded and won the Croce de Guerra. He became a reporter in Toronto for The Star after the war and in 1921 moved to Paris among literary Americans such as Ezra Pound. Fewer than a hundred poems survive from his hand, but his first published book, entitled

The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center, located at 1021 W. Cherry St. in Piggott, AR, is an off campus program of Arkansas State University designed to contribute to the regional, national and global understanding of the 1920s and 1930s by focusing on the internationally connected Pfeiffer family of Piggott, AR, and their son-in-law, Ernest Hemingway. The properties of the museum associated with Hemingway include a barn studio and the family home of his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer. Her parents, Paul and Mary Pfeiffer, were prominent citizens of Northeast Arkansas and owned more that 60,000 acres of land. During the 1930s the barn was converted to a studio to give Hemingway privacy for writing while visiting Piggott.

American Literature Web Resources: Ernest Hemingway
      Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961)
Compiled by Will Carroll, Millikin University
"I always try to write on the principal of the iceberg. There is seven-eights of it under water for every part that shows. Anything you know you can eliminate and it only strengthens your iceberg... It is the part that doesn't show." Ernest Hemingway,1958 The short, strong sentences of a journalist and the stripped, simple prose that was his to create made Hemingway one of the most stylistic writers of modern times. Hemingway sought inspiration in writers such as Twain and Crane, and from works such as the King James Bible. Hemingway hid nothing from the reader, though the reader did have to work to find it. He created reality on the page and was obsessed with such topics as war, nature, and the human spirit. He captured the "American Hero" and is the finest example of a realistic writer. One reporter said that Hemingway "writes as if he had never read anybody's writing, as if he had fashioned the art of writing himself."
Hemingway was famous for his complex characters and iceberg style stories. One of the best examples of this style is Hills Like White Elephants in which he records a simple conversation and leaves the rest to the reader. Hemingway was said to be a compulsive liar, but his fiction was his only truth. He painted a hard and clear picture of the world and the human experience and captured the spited perfectly with his complex character, the most complex being Hemingway himself.
