Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way. Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) Never mistake motion for action. Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) American novelist and short-story writer There are some things which cannot be learned quickly, and time, which is all we have, must be paid heavily for their acquiring. They are the very simplest things, and because it takes a man's life to know them the little new that each man gets from life is very costly and the only heritage he has to leave.

Ernest Hemingway
BIO
From 1925 to 1929, Ernest Hemingway produced some of the most important works of 20th century fiction, including the landmark short story collection IN OUR TIME (1925) which contained "The Big Two-Hearted River." In 1926 he came out with his first true novel, THE SUN ALSO RISES (after publishing TORRENTS OF SPRING, a comic novel parodying Sherwood Anderson in 1925). He followed that book with MEN WITHOUT WOMEN in 1927; it was another book of stories which collected "The Killers" and "In Another Country." In 1929 he published A FAREWELL TO ARMS, arguably the finest novel to emerge from World War I.
In 1932, Hemingway published his book on Spanish bullfighting, DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON. He completed FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS in 1940, to great critical and commercial success. It was followed by Hemingway's masterpiece THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1953. In 1954, Hemingway won the Nobel Prize for literature. Hemingway committed suicide on July 2, 1961.
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois.

" A t 8 o'clock on the morning of July 21st. 1899 Ernest Miller Hemingway came to town wrapped in a light blue comforter. It was a very hot morning. The sun shone brightly and the Robins sang their sweetest songs to welcome the little stranger to this beautiful world "The little lad weighed 9 lbs., had thick black hair, dark blue eyes, black eyebrows, Mahogany colored complexion, a dimple in each cheek, Grandpa Ernest Hall's nose and mouth, like a cupid's bow, Hands and nails just like Grandpa Ernest's. Plump and perfect in form with a deep toned voice," wrote Grace Hall Hemingway of her second child's birth in the first of five lavishly annotated scrapbooks of photographs, newspaper clippings, and letters she made. The paper record that begins with her lovingly compiled scrapbooks comes full circle with the donations to the John F. Kennedy Library by Hemingway's fourth wife and widow, Mary Welsh Hemingway, and his sons, Jack, Patrick, and Gregory, of Hemingway's manuscripts, letters, scrapbooks, notebooks, photographs, and memorabilia. Fading French copybooks with handwritten drafts of

The Ernest Hemingway collection at the John F. Kennedy Library is the most comprehensive body of Hemingway material currently available in one place. Research in these materials is essential to anyone who attempts a definitive study of Hemingway and his writing. There are, however, gaps in the collection. In an effort to fill out the existing collection at the Kennedy Library, we try to discover caches of primary materials and obtain them (or copies), through gift, for the Hemingway collection at the Kennedy Library.
The Hemingway Research Room's mission is to serve first researchers, then educational groups and the general public. The room is not open for general interest or browsing but rather for researchers who require the use of the library's unique manuscript, audiovisual, and documentary holdings related to Ernest Hemingway.
