Where is the Mark Helprin column on the impeachment trial?

March 13, 1999
William L. Davis
I have seen references to a recent Mark Helprin column in the Wall Street Journal about the impeachment trial. It does not appear to have been posted here, or to be available anywhere on the Net (to those who do not subscribe to the WSJ web site). Please help!
It is time for Mark Helprin to write another piece. This situation is ripe for his comments!

I don't know about you, but I have read his novels and his articles and there is no way anyone can critique this administration better than him. His words are sheer poetry. We need a new piece on the Democrats selling of what is left of their soul for Bubba. Mr. Helprin, if you read the Free Republic, yours fans wait! Nothing follows...

Defend Civilization Itself
Mark Helprin
Mark Helprin, a novelist and a contributing editor of the Wall Street Journal, was raised on the Hudson and in the British West Indies. After receiving degrees from Harvard College and Harvard's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, he did postgraduate work at the University of Oxford, and he has served in the British Merchant Navy, the Israeli infantry, and the Israeli Air Force. He was published in The New Yorker for almost a quarter of a century, and his stories and essays appear in the New York Times, Commentary, American Heritage, Forbes ASAP, and many other publications here and abroad. Translated into more than a dozen languages, his books include Refiner's Fire, Winter's Tale, A Soldier of the Great War and Memoir from Antproof Case. The following speech was delivered to the graduating class of Hillsdale Academy, Hillsdale College's K-12 model school, on May 24, 2002.
I had wanted to speak to you tonight about defense, about the campaign in Afghanistan, and the war against terrorism to shower you with facts and figures, which would support my contention that, in regard to the defense of this country, three administrations in a row have not done, and are not doing, enough. Three administrations in a row have not appreciated, and still do not appreciate, the gathering storm. I had wanted to do that, but the president of a surrounding college said, wisely, "Remember the occasion." And I shall, for it is a most worthy occasion, and he is right, it must take precedence over policy, which not only blows with the wind, but disappears with it.

Issue 1.2
March 5, 2002
This time of year, the last thing I want to think about is winter. Like, oh, everyone, I don't even want to contemplate the approaching horror of sleet, slush, bulky sweaters, smelly heaters, and scraping frost off my car windows in the sub-freezing pre-dawn. But then I read a book like Mark Helprin's beautiful, profound Winter's Tale , and I find myself longing for a blizzard. Simultaneously a quest tale, a futuristic millennial fantasy (first published in 1983), a romance, a meditation on the uncompromising nature of justice, and a love poem to the city of New York, Winter's Tale is an absolutely breathtaking piece of work. In the late 1990s, Hardesty Marratta arrives in New York. He's on a quest of his own: he's looking for the Perfectly Just City, where, he believes, "all forces would smoothly align, and all balances would be brought even." He doesn't expect to be in New York for long. However, he's quickly drawn into the lives of the Penn family's descendants and their friends and that of Peter Lake, who has hurtled through time with Pearly Soames hot on his trail and Athansor nowhere to be found. Eventually the two men's efforts converge, while around them, the Millennium approaches and the city begins a remarkable transformation. The very best part, however, is Helprin's writing. In the wrong hands, this story could have been (depending on the writer) over-the-top, muddled and confusing, or hopelessly twee. But Helprin's style is pure poetry. He uses language like no one else, and he makes it look easy, and he makes it

70. SALON: Rewriting Bob Dole

M A R K H E L P R I N REWRITING BOB DOLE Novelist Mark Helprin talks about his fascination with war and death, his exile from the liberal literary establishment, and his greatest writing challenge making flatlander Bob into a figure of mythical stature. By MARK SCHAPIRO Illustration by
Zach Trenholm
M ark Helprin is more than just an accomplished novelist and sometime conservative commentator. He's also a would-be kingmaker. The novelist has been besieged by the press ever since it was revealed that he authored Bob Dole's Senate retirement speech an unusually lyrical oration by the Kansas solon's dry standards. Helprin's soaring words were widely credited with at least temporarily recharging Dole's languishing presidential campaign. After laboring unsuccessfully for an interview with the feted speechwriter, one recent afternoon I received a mysterious phone call. The caller challenged me to guess his identity, providing me with a series of obscure clues: he was calling from "the state with the second largest park service, after Alaska;" he lived in "the north of that state;" he was sitting at a "polished wooden desk with a clutter of papers in an office with rosewood panels;" he was "looking out the window onto a farm field of alfalfa." I finally realized that I was talking to none other than the elusive Mark Helprin himself. My acumen was rewarded with a nearly hour-long interview, as the novelist sat in his rosewood-paneled office in the farmhouse in upstate New York where he lives with his wife and two children.

    Mark Helprin on Iraq
President Bush's post-9/11 address to Congress is the most recent truly brilliant political speech. Before that, there was Bob Dole's announcement in 1996 that he would quit the Senate. Dole declared: I announce that I will forego the privileges not only of the office of the majority leader but of the United States Senate itself, from which I resign effective on or before June 11th. And I will then stand before you without office or authority, a private citizen, a Kansan, an American, just a man. You do not lay claim to the office you hold, it lays claim to you. Your obligation is to bring to it the gifts you can of labor and honesty and then to depart with grace. And my time to leave this office has come, and I will seek the presidency with nothing to fall back on but the judgment of the people, and nowhere to go but the White House or home. Wonderful prose. The speech and the idea that Dole would quit the Senate, not just resign as majority leader originated with Mark Helprin, a novelist and contributor to the Wall Street Journal. Today Helprin has written the definitive piece on Iraq.

One of America's most interesting novelists is also a conservativeand a crafter of powerful political rhetoric and commentary. Novelist Mark Helprin, 54, is one of the brightest lights in American letters. His fiction includes A Soldier of the Great War, the story of an old man who imparts his life's wisdom to a young boy; Winter's Tale, a fairy-tale about New York City; Refiner's Fire, a semi-autobiographical adventure about a young man serving in the Israeli Army during the Yom Kippur War; and Memoir From Antproof Case, about an investment banker/bank robber from the World War II generation. In 1996, Helprin made his public debut as a political speechwriter, crafting Presidential candidate Bob Dole's Republican Convention cri de coeur and powerful resignation from the Senate. I will run for President as "a private citizen, a Kansan, an American, just a man," said Dole, via Helprin.

So you've decided to read some Helprin... The place to begin is at the end, because that is where you will fall in love. You can work back from there. So start with Memoir from Antproof Case . If you don't like it, then you probably won't like Helprin at all. But if you adore it, you're in for a treat. You can also start with A Soldier of the Great War , but I have found in my evangelizing that the word "war" in the title tends to be a turn-off for some people I admit that I myself was slightly of that ilk at first. Of course, in the end, it doesn't matter a bit, since Soldier is less a war novel and more a novel of life and truth and beauty which is to say, a truly good book and anyone who will judge a book solely by its title needs to change his outlook. But it can create a cetain preconception that doesn't fit, and that makes the book a harder read in some ways, since you might think you know what to expect, but are incorrect. Winter's Tale , I find, is better understood and appreciated after having read something else by Helprin. The same is probably true for Refiner's Fire , but this is all specilation. The short stories well, you can throw those in as soon as you've read a novel. They're fantastic.

    a critical list with discussions
Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by Mark Helprin
This is a brief discussion of Mark Helprin and, of course, of some books by Mark Helprin.
This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Helprin; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the' title so you know what's what.)
I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Helprin tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Helprin worthy; in sum, to help you rank Helprin (and the works by Helprin listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.
