Almost a dialogue with Lyn Hejinian: quotations and phantom limbs . . .
Lyn Hejinian, in a recent email written in response to a poem entitled “Insides”, which I had dedicated to her, asked: “Do you think poetry is physiological?” I’m still to reply in full – and maybe this is my answer. I dedicated the poem “Insides” to Lyn because many years earlier she’d told me about attending autopsies. Back then I’d written the following: In the dissection of the corpse of this poem I recall Lyn Hejinian telling me how she’d gone to watch autopsies with Mike Patton, the lead singer of Faith No More. I wouldn’t have mentioned Mike but his music on world tour I’d have tried to solicit material for the literary journal I edit. Lyn said that in this de-sensitized environment (actually that’s my word, I can’t remember what she said specifically but its effect on me was to suggest this) the body wasn’t that frightening. I think she held a liver. I asked if it was like a collection of artefacts being removed carefully from a tomb. I think she laughed.

"Lyn Hejinian's work increasingly explores poetry's relation to knowledge... . But rather than abstract frameworks, one finds in [ A Border Comedy, a serial poem in fifteen 'books' A Border Comedy ... . One of the interesting oddnesses of the book, one that forces us to catch our breath and occasionally to huff, is that quasi-transcendental or a priori insights (often linked to continental philosophy) find their way skillfully and unpredictably into what is otherwise a radically nominalistic, context-dependent intellectual setting." —Lytle Shaw. Lyn Hejinian from The Fatalist Dog isn’t right, poetry isn’t wrong — words in themselves
can’t be right or wrong. If writing is to serve as their chief
interrogator it must ask the very questions
regarding puppets or cookies that we would ask
with a three year old dashing toward us
with confidence. We would have to be armed
with questions and the artistic courage
that is required to sustain them. Then things will surface
like the scraps of paper on which they are written and ambition
afloat on mineral water left over from the party – we all remember
the preparations before and the cleanup after the fire. Brown by day and red at night, the sky came within 500 yards of the conscripted convicts. We gave them everything they asked for when they approached the fire through miles of brush in prison garb and guarded by deputies thinking us naive to be grateful for something they’d been condemned to do. Things weren’t yet working but I knew how to fix the problem. It was structural as when I was in high school sitting in the town cemetery which lay pretty much midway between the sentimental verses on the gravestones and my fear of death. Figures distinct

"Hejinian's essays are a keystone of postwar North American poetics. They are also a great pleasure to read, for Hejinian is an extraordinarily resonant stylist whose work combines the lushness of her poetry with an engaging aesthetic and philosophical inventiveness. This is writing that avoids closure in the pursuit of unfolding, multifaceted, restive thought. The Language of Inquiry's meditations on the possibilities of poetry create an experience in which each reader is at the center. To engage with this work is to be put in touch with oneself as if anew."Charles Bernstein, author of My Way: Speeches and Poems "From 1975, when she wrote 'A Thought Is the Bride of What Thinking' the first 'essay' in this collection Lyn Hejinian has always regarded poetry and poetics as intimately interwoven: her poetry has sometimes been highly theoretical even as her theoretical and critical peices are nothing if not poetic. The Beginner Lyn Hejinian Spectacular Books, PO Box 250648 Columbia University Station, New York, NY 10025 www.spectacularbooks.com [$6, 16pp. Pub.2001 ISBN 1-930068-08-5] Wishing to know what my favourite poet was up to I bought this. ‘The Beginner’ is a single poem/text written in discursive prose style and arranged in conventional paragraphs and sentences. The formality of a ‘poem’ is simply a matter of the indentation of every new paragraph which means that sometimes a single sentence is a paragraph and so sits there like a line from a poem. The same effect is achieved between groups of paragraphs separated by a wider space; it gives such groups the look and feel of a stanza. If you are familiar with Hejinian then you will know that such things are not trivial or accidental, they are as important as any other poetic arrangement. The poem concerns ‘beginnings’. On first reading it I had the sensation of experiencing - or it induced the memory of being told the stories of - the creation story and such myths up to and including the ‘big bang’. I felt as if I was child again: an effect not unconnected with the entire feel and project of this wonderful piece of writing, where the state of childhood is often the focus (but always in memory). Subject wise it is familiar Hejinian territory – most of her work is orientated around the relationship between her ‘life’ and the language world that infuses it. The poem could be described as a string of philosophical hops, poetic skips and childlike jumps; which brings me to this…

ISBN 1-931157-02-2 According to the author, the poem Slowly was instigated slowly and simultaneously from several sources. Prominent among them are the films of Peter Hutton and the Tai Chi practice of Lin-yi Wu, under whom the author studied briefly. It is only under the pressure of slowness that the temporal nature of a place or of the action taking place in it is revealed. The slow are recalcitrant, resistant, suddenly. They frequently delay, linger, and digress. The slow rarely reach a terminus and if they do they do so late, which puts them in time to see that what one does is equivalent all at once to how one does it.

The Beginner
Lyn Hejinian
42 pages
ISBN 1-931157-03-0 Originally published in a limited edition of 300 copies in 2001 by Spectacular Books, The Beginner forms the middle section of a trilogy (without a name), whose first part is Happily (Post-Apollo Press, 2000) and whose last part is Slowly. Tuumba Press is pleased to bring the book back into print. It is significant that, despite its title, The Beginner , forms the middle section of the trilogy: "This is a good place to begin," the poem announces in its first line. "From something." Beginnings never depart from the midst of the things they find themselves among nor from the midst of the things they begin.
