Which?
The answer must be deferred just as I write this, a child comes into the room with a book always a little differently, he says, I don't like gloom, so much the better, I say.

She is often associated with the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets The L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets were probably the most significant avant garde grouping in United States poetry in the last quarter of the 20th century. In developing a poetic, they took as their starting point the emphasis on method evident in the modernist tradition, particularly as represented by Gertrude Stein and the Objectivist poet Louis Zukofsky.

Lyn Hejinian at the University of Auckland, 21 and 23 March 1995. Transcribed by Fredrika Van Elburg for online presentation April 2002. 1. A Talk to the MA Poetics class, 21 March 1995 Nothing but this can possibly name its delicate idiosyncrasy William James
Michele Leggott: If I can quickly locate the kinds of concerns that we have been looking at in the Poetics class, so as to make sense of where we are and where Lyn is coming in. In the previous couple of weeks we’ve read and discussed essays about the relative positioning of academic writing to the American experimental tradition we are exploring. It’s an interesting relationship in that that tradition has been oppositional to the codifications that tend to take place within academies, but not in the least oppositional to scholarship (which goes on within and without academies). There’s something problematic and interesting between what happens in this tradition as practice and as theorizing of its practice by poets, and what goes on in the university which is also the place we are, and where we are involved formally in a course looking at these issues. Lyn is a poet, an editor and a translator, and I’m hoping that she might tell you a little about each of those activities. Most of you know

Interview with Lyn Hejinian
Vicki Hudspith : In your letter to me last summer you said the new work you're doing feels "like war today." Does it still? Lyn Hejinian : Things are much better! (laughter) For a few months I couldn't get any work done at all. I got entangled in a lot of questions having to do with the difference between lines and sentences which determines whether the work is poetry or prose. That was an essentially formal problem but absolutely central to the work of writing itself. The other issue seems to be what one might call motivation for work. I dont mean my own I'm motivatedI mean the work's. Really, very very little of my work has ever been "motivated" or "occasional"occasionedthat is, written because of or about some occasion V.H. : Are you trying to pull content back into the work? Lyn Hejinian to read Thursday night
By Travis Petersen Published: Wednesday, February 4, 2004 Lyn Hejinian Information What: Lyn Hejinian reads her poetry Where: Hurst Lounge, Upstairs in Duncker Hall When: Thursday, Feb 5, 8 p.m. Thursday night at 8 pm in Hurst Lounge, located upstairs in Duncker Hall, acclaimed poet Lyn Hejinian will read her work. It is speculated that she will be reading new, as yet unpublished poems, hopefully works that will add yet another achievement to her towering canon. Born in the Bay Area in 1941, Hejinian is a poet, editor, translator and essayist. She has written and co-written numerous books of poetry, edited journals. Her most famous and well-regarded work is probably "My Life," a book of prose/language poems first published in 1980. When released in an expanded edition in 1987, "My Life" garnered heaps of praise, winning the 1987 San Francisco State Poetry Center Award and achieving finalist status for the Bay Area Book Reviewers Association Book Award. Library Journal described the book as "an intriguing journey that both illuminates and perplexes, teases and challenges." Poetry Flash wrote that it was full of "hypnotic power, obvious intelligence, and is astonishingly beautiful." It is the kind of book that is taught in college poetry courses not because it is required reading, but because teachers often like to expose their students to its unique power.
