Mini biography
At the age of 17, Heinlein graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri. He spent one year at the University of Missouri before he entered the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, from which he graduated as the 20th best among the 243 cadets. He spent five years in the Pacific Ocean until he had to retire because of tuberculosis in 1934. After his retirement he had diffrent kinds of jobs: silvermining in Colorado, land-agent, political speech-writer and a failed attempt to become an elected politician. He also married his first wife, 'Leslyn McDonald'.
His first story, 'Lifeline', was written as an entry for a magazine contest offering $50 for the best sf story by a new writer, but he sold it instead for $70 to the magazine 'Astounding Stories', where it was published in August 1939. During WW2 he worked as a research engineer for the navy in Philadelphia but he also wrote 25 novels and short stories. He also met his second wife 'Virginia Gerstenfeld' whom he married in 1948. Not much is known about his personal life. He once said that he wrote seven days a week, six months a year. The other six months he travelled or was lazy. At the end of the 1960s his health became weaker and he had to undergo several treatments. His health improved after a major operation in 1982 but his novel 'To Sail Beyond the Sunset', published in 1987, became his last.

Robert Heinlein was one of the leading science fiction writers of the twentieth century. Perhaps the main theme in Heinlein's work is the liberation of the individual from the mores and customs of his culture. People are "canalized" as children- their values, opinions, and beliefs are imposed upon them. These become limiting factors, pre venting any growth beyond a narrow range of cultural norms. But we can break free if we learn to objectify our culture, to see it from an outside perspective. Then we can critically examine the values and beliefs that were imprinted upon us as defenseless children, and having examined, choose what to keep and what to discard, and what to adopt instead. This is Robert Heinlein's vision of a free individual- the architect of one's own soul. Other recurring themes uniting Heinlein's works include individual dignity and the supreme value of personal liberty, the virtue of independence, science as a liberating factor, the perniciousness of bureaucrats, the hypocrisy of organized religion and the silliness of mysticism. Lyle, before he had learned to read. In 1924 he graduated from Kansas City High School and entered the University of Missouri for one year. He served in the navy from 1925-1934, beginning as a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, then serving as gunnery officer on a number of ships. In 1934 he retired from the Navy on a medical discharge for tuberculosis. The next five years of his life were spent doing graduate study in physics at UCLA, and in various attempts to find careers in such fields as architecture, real estate, mining, and politics. Once during this time he ran for California State Assemblyman.

Go to: Introductory Notes In each section, the first paragraph of bold text is the original prophecy, as given in the 1950 magazine article " Pandora's Box " by the S.F. writer Robert Anson Heinlein (author of "Starship Troopers" and "Stranger in a Strange Land"). Next I have appended comments of my own arguing for and against the accuracy of the prediction, and a score, running in each case from 0, a total miss, up to 1, utterly perfect. The first indented paragraph after this gives the postscripts from his amended version for 1966, " Where To? " Lastly come the afterthoughts for the 1980 version, as collected in " Expanded Universe ." Reactions and counter-arguments are welcome. Most of the material here was first posted in 1997 (which was of course a bit hasty see my page for an excuse), but updates have been added right up to the deadline.
