I believe this to be the most complete general reference to Heinlein and his work you'll find on the web. This FAQ is intended to answer most of the common questions asked about Heinlein and his works. A FAQ is inherently a repository of short, discrete questions and answers and not a smoothly comprehensive document. The other items in the Archives provide broader context in the form of biographies, complete bibliographies, and the like. This document is intended to supplement those foundation elements and provide a place for all the odd little questions that are commonly asked and which don't fit into a continuous account. I have elected to keep this document in one file. While a multi-file format has its advantages, it also makes duplication and printing much more difficult. The primary disadvantage - slow loading time - is not really a problem compared to the disadvantages of having to maintain a large number of files and their related links. With this revision (3.0) I have elected to go to a more traditional legal-numbering format. It is more difficult to maintain, but should be easier to use as a lookup document.

Carlos Angelo Double Star in '56; Starship Troopers in '60; Stranger in a Strange Land in '62 and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress in '67. He was the first to be chosen as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America, in 1975. Astounding Science Fiction , for which he earned seventy dollars. From then on, he wrote and published stories in large quantity, which caused him to have to adopt pseudonyms in order to prevent two stories from the "same" author being published in the same edition of a magazine. His pseudonyms were Anson McDonald, Lyle Monroe, Caleb Saunders, John Riverside and Simon York (this last was for a detective story). "Future History" as it was later known), which lent them even more verisimilitude by making them part of a fictional universe already known to his readers. He managed to make the future appear as believable as the present. Podkayne of Mars (1962) shows us a Venus colonized principally by Brazilians, a planet of capitalism carried to its extreme, where, in order to get anything, one has to grease a lot of palms. That is not to say that Heinlein took a jaundiced view of Brazil; indeed, he saw Brazil's future as a rosy one. As he noted in Tramp Royale (1954, published posthumously in 1992), Heinlein admired Brazil, believing it to have the same vigor, resources and pioneer spirit that had made his mother country a superpower; he predicted that Brazil would dominate the 21st century as thoroughly as the United States dominated the 20th. Heinlein visited Brazil in 1953, on one of his four voyages around the world and, later, in 1969, at the invitation of the Brazilian government.

The Robert Heinlein Interview and Other Heinleiniana
J. Neil Schulman In 1973, Robert A. Heinlein was sixty-six, at the height of his literary career; J. Neil Schulman was twenty and hadn’t yet started his first novel. Because he was looking for a way to meet his idol, Schulman wangled an assignment from the New York Daily News at the time the largest circulation newspaper in the U.S.to interview Heinlein for its Sunday Book Supplement. The resulting taped interview lasted three-and-a-half hours. This turned out to be the longest interview Heinlein ever granted, and the only one in which he talked freely and extensively about his personal philosophy and ideology. The Robert Heinlein Interview contains Heinlein you won’t find anywhere elseeven in Heinlein’s own Expanded Universe. If you want to know what Heinlein had to say about UFO’s, life after death, epistemology, or libertarianism, this interview is the only source available. Also included in this collection are articles, reviews, and letters that J. Neil Schulman wrote about Heinlein, including the original article written for the Daily News , about which the Heinleins wrote Schulman that it was, 'The best articlein style, content, and accuracyof the many, many written about him over the years.'

Heinlein Future History
The Heinlein Timeline , that precedes every book of the Future History mentions the date April 2, 1939, so I used April, 1939 for this short story. I have put some arrows to help the reader follow some characters that jump in time, or out of this timeline. Some of the dates are shown in intervals, for example 3050 There are too many chronological data in those books, and I'm sure I haven't got all of them. I would be very happy to know about any data that hasn't been added to this timeline. Please notify me of such Return to Alberto Monteiro's Home Page Return to other Heinlein Timelines

Please let me know if you find any errors or omissions or if you want to contribute. The hardest part about gaining any new idea is sweeping out the false idea occupying that niche. As long as that niche is occupied, evidence and proof and logical demonstration get nowhere. But once the niche is emptied of the wrong idea that has been filling it - once you can honestly say, I don't know, then it becomes possible to get at the truth.

and Tunnel in the Sky . As would be the case years later with a certain little old Russian lady's name, he didn't know how to pronounce "Heinlein".
The Green Hills of Earth formed my first coherent vision of the future, establishing the historical context for my own life, convincing me (as kids must be if they're to turn out civilized) that, just as millions of human beings preceded me in past ages, so millions more will follow in ages to come. At the same time, Methuselah's Children revealed to me that, yes, I do want to live forever, and that such a thing, given time and the stubborn application of reason, might just be possible.
Between Planets taught me that a kid never knows when the demands of adulthood will tap him on the shoulder. There are worse things that could happen. Starman Jones taught me that the adult world makes about as much sense as the average train wreck, and that it's the first duty of anyone who aspires to be a whole human being to start re-making the world the way he wants it. Toward that end
