Anthony Hecht (b. 1923). Born in New York City, Hecht attended Bard College (B.A., 1944). After three years in the U.S. Army, serving in Europe and Japan, he continued his education at Columbia University (M.A., 1950). Hecht has taught at several universities, including the University of Rochester, where he was professor of poetry and rhetoric in 1967. He is presently a professor in the graduate school of Georgetown University. His awards include a 1951 Prix de Rome, and Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and Ford Foundation Fellowships, as well as the Bollingen Prize in Poetry. His first book of poetry, A Summer of Stones (1954), was followed by Hard Hours (1968), which won a Pulitzer Prize for poetry, Millions of Strange Shadows Venetian Vespers (1979), and The Transparent Man (1990). His most recent collection of poems is Flight Among the Tombs (1996). Hecht is also the author of a collection of critical essays, Obbligati Acclaimed for his technical expertise, Hecht was first devoted to traditional poetic forms, and his work was sometimes described as "baroque" and "courtly." More recently, his work has become less decorative.

by David Yezzi Click to buy the book(s). Few men speak humbly of humility, chastely of chastity, skeptically of skepticism.
S Collected Later Poems takes up where his magnificent Collected Earlier Poems leaves off. The two books span some fifty years of writing, from A Summoning of Stones in 1954 to roughly the present. Hecht, of course, is still very much with us and adding to his complete works, but, regardless of any poems that follow, these two volumes constitute one of the great achievements in poetry of the last hundred years. This will be even clearer, I suspect, in decades to follow, which is not to say that Hecht has suffered neglect. He is one of our most laureled poets. But the way The Later Poems en plein air
What do those distant thunderheads betide?
Nothing to do with us. Not our disgrace
That the raped corpse of a fourteen-year-old, tied
With friction tape, is found in a ditch, and a tide
Of violent crime breaks out. Yet the world grown
Wrathful, corrupt, once loosed a true floodtide

The Darkness and the Light

A Review by Jason Gray
Anthony Hecht's seventh collection, The Darkness and the Light , is a mesmerization by poetic prism. The light flashes, then goes dark, and we are under his spell. From love under a Florentine sunset to staring down the barrel of a NAZI rifle, there seems to be no subject on which Hecht cannot speak with passion and compassion.
Sight, the predominant idea of the book, announces itself with the voice of the mirror. A poetic tradition for centuries, Hecht's mirror is a jaded one:
"Beauty, your highness, dwells in the clouded cornea
Of the self-deceived beholder, whereas Truth,
According to film moguls of California,
Lies in makeup, smoke and mirrors, gin and vermouth. . .
The mirror lists attempts by various people to find the truth though glass, some successful, some not. In the final stanzas of the poem, the mirror admits: "It's when no one's around that I'm most truthful. . ." and continues: Light fades, of course, with the oncoming of dusk;

The perfect companion to his Collected Earlier Poems (continuously in print since 1990), this book brings the eloquent sound of Hecht's music to bear on a wide variety of human dramas: from a young woman dying of leukemia to the tangled love affairs of A Midsummer Night's Dream ; from Death as the director of Hollywood films to the unexpected image of Marcel Proust as a figure skater.

    Two Poems:
    Curriculum Vitae
As though it were reluctant to be day,
    Morning deploys a scale
    Of rarities in gray,
And winter settles down in its chain-mail, Victorious over legions of gold and red.
    The smokey souls of stones,
    Blunt pencillings of lead,
Pare down the world to glintless monotones Of graveyard weather, vapors of a fen
    We reckon through our pores.
    Save for the garbage men,
Our children are the first ones out of doors. Book-bagged and padded out, at mouth and nose
They manufacture ghosts, George Washington's and Poe's, Banquo's, the Union and Confederate hosts', And are themselves the ghosts, file cabinet gray, Of some departed us, Signing our lives away On ferned and parslied windows of a bus.
Eclogue of the Shepherd and the Townie
SHEPHERD Not the blue-fountained Florida hotel, Bell-capped, bellevued, straight-jacketed and decked With chromium palms and a fromage of moon, Not goodnight chocolates, nor the soothing slide Neither the yacht heraldic nor the stretch Limos and pants, Swiss banks or Alpine stocks

‘The work of Anthony Hecht shatters the cosy notion that a fragmented, fractured age should be reflected in the forms of its art, that ugliness and shapelessness demand payment in kind. Like Auden, he has absorbed the evils and grotesqueries of his unhappy century into a verse both highly formal and all-encompassing, stitching wounds with iambs, sculpting pentameters of sustained, Latinate beauty, sounding a healing music.’ Glyn Maxwell
