Sestina tends to have a scary ring to it, and I imagine many fall back with a look of fright at the mere sound of the word. We all have, it's all right. A little pactice and the sestina can be a very rewarding exercise for any poet looking for a challenge. The sestina is yet another fun, French form, and it is divided into 6 sestets (six line stanzas) and 1 triplet called an envoi which is just a concluding stanza that is half the size of the rest. Unless you wish to make the sestina harder than it already may be, it is usually unrhymed and works by repeating the end words of each line. The envoi contains, in any order, all of the six end-words. The catch is that one has to be buried in each line and another must be at the end of the line. The pattern for repeating the words is like this: (stanza A) 123456, (stanza B) 615243. This 615243 pattern is how each of the "next" stanzas are made. The first way to learn this pattern is to look at a sestina. "Sestina d'Inverno" by Anthony Hecht: Here in this bleak city of Rochester

Hecht, Anthony The Transparent Man
On-Line Text Genre Poem Keywords Abandonment Cancer Children Communication ... Suffering Summary The poem begins, "I'm mighty glad to see you, Mrs. Curtis." The speaker is a woman who is dying of leukemia and Mrs. Curtis is the lady who comes around periodically with the book-cart, offering patients something to read. While the other patients are celebrating the holiday with family or friends, the speaker, who has no visitors, feels conspicuous and lonely. Thus, she is grateful for Mrs. Curtis' regular visit, especially since the book-cart lady appears willing to sit down and listen. The patient's father is afraid to visit, since he knows "that I will predecease him / which is hard enough." Chemotherapy hasn't helped. The leukemia makes her so fatigued that she doesn't even feel like reading. So instead, she sits by the window and looks at the trees. Since the leaves have fallen, the trees look like "magnificent enlargements / Of the vascular system of the human brain."

Lot's Wife How simple the pleasures of those childhood days,
Simple but filled with exquisite satisfactions.
The iridescent labyrinth of the spider,
Its tethered tensor nest of polygons
Puffed by the breeze to a little bellying sail
Merely observing this gave infinite pleasure. The sound of rain. The gentle graphite veil Of rain that makes of the world a steel engraving, Full of soft fadings and faint distances. The self-congratulations of a fly, Rubbing its hands. The brown bicameral brain Of a walnut. The smell of wax. The feel Of sugar to the tongue: a delicious sand. One understands immediately how Proust Might cherish all such postage-stamp details. Who can resist the charms of retrospection? Excerpted from The Darkness and the Light Death the Whore I Some thin gray smoke twists up against a sky Of German silver in the sullen dusk From a small chimney among leafless trees.

    An Old Malediction
What well-heeled knuckle-head, straight from the unisex
Hairstylist and bathed in "Russian Leather,"
Dallies with you these late summer days, Pyrrha,
In your expensive sublet? For whom do you
Slip into something simple by, say, Gucci?
The more fool he who has mapped out for himself
The saline latitudes of incontinent grief.
Dazzled though he be, poor dope, by the golden looks
Your locks fetched up out of a bottle of Clairol,
He will know that the wind changes, the smooth sailing Is done for, when the breakers wallop him broadside, When he's rudderless, dismasted, thoroughly swamped In that mindless rip-tide that got the best of me Once, when I ventured on your deeps, Piranha. Close this window when finished.

    The Life of a Poet
A Conversation with Anthony Hecht NEH Chairman Bruce Cole spoke recently with Anthony Hecht about the writing of poetry and the relationship between poetry and art. Hecht has published seven volumes of poetry, among them The Hard Hours , which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1968. He is chancellor emeritus of the Academy of American Poets. Bruce Cole: Let’s begin at the beginning. How did you start out to be a poet? Anthony Hecht: When I was a college freshman, I had fallen in love with poetrythe poetry of others, to be sure, not my own. When I came home for a holiday weekend and announced with foolish bravura to my parents that that’s what I wanted to do, their silence was more appalling than any kind of recrimination. My father was a businessman and I expected to be told how stupid this was as a mode of life. But he didn’t say anything. Nor did my mother. I knew immediately that this represented the absolute epitome of disapproval. The next time I came home they had called in allies. The allies were, of all people, Dr. Seuss, who was a close family friend, and his wifeTed Geisel and his wife Helen. Nothing leading was said at any point during the course of the dinner conversation, but after the dinner was over, Ted walked in to the living room with me and put his arm on my shoulders and said, “Tell me what it is that you think you want to do with your life.” I knew immediately that this was a setup, that my parents were in up to their eyeballs. I saw no way of seeking some devious way out of it, so I simply confessed that I wanted to be a poet. Ted said, “I think that’s a wonderful ambition. Let me tell you what I think you should do first. I think you should read
