http://art-bin.com/art/ohearn1.html
Please note: Lafcadio Hearn: Chin Chin Kobakama
(Lafcadio Hearn's untitled Preface) The floor of a Japanese room is covered with beautiful thick soft mats of woven reeds. They fit very closely together, so that you can just slip a knife-blade between them. They are changed once every year, and are kept very clean. The Japanese never wear shoes in the house, and do not use chairs or furniture such as English people use. They sit, sleep, eat, and sometimes even write upon the floor. So the mats must be kept very clean indeed, and Japanese children are taught, just as soon as they can speak, never to spoil or dirty the mats. You ask me whether all, all Japanese children are as good as that? Well - no, there are a few, a very few naughty ones. And what happens to the mats in the houses of these naughty children? Nothing very bad - because there are fairies who take care of the mats. These fairies tease and frighten children who dirty or spoil the mats. At least - they used to tease and frighten such mischievous children. I am not quite sure whether those little fairies still live in Japan, - because the new railways and the telegraph-poles have frightened a great many fairies away. But here is a little story about them: - Read the story!

Hearn, Lafcadio
27 June 1850 - 26 September 1904
Born in Greece to an Irish father and Greek mother, Hearn spent much of his early life in Ireland and English, coming as a young man to America (Cincinnati, of all places, for eight years, then some time in New Orleans) where he developed and blossomed as a writer. Hearn spend much of his later life in Japan, becoming a naturalized citizen. His 1904 volume Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things is perhaps the work for which he is best known today; it continues to serve as an introduction of non-Western supernaturalism to a Western audience.

Etexts: Many of the stories below are from Hearn's collection Kwaidan , also available as a Project Gutenberg etext (234K).
Chin Chin Kobakama
This is Hearn's translation of a traditional Japanese fairy tale (or two tales, actually, w/ the shorter second one apparently a variant of the first). This site features nice images of this 1905 illustrated work - an e-facsimile, basically - along w/ the transcribed text. A real treat; the illustrations, by an unidentified artist, are an absolute delight. [The Art Bin]

"Lafcadio Hearn is almost as Japanese as haiku. Both are an art form, an institution in Japan. Haiku is indigenous to the nation; Hearn became a Japanese citizen and married a Japanese, taking the name Yakumo Koizumi. His flight from Western materialism brought him to Japan in 1890. His search for beauty and tranquility, for pleasing customs and lasting values, kept him there the rest of his life, a confirmed Japanophile. He became the great interpreter of things Japanese to the West. His keen intellect, poetic imagination and wonderful clear style permitted him to penetrate to the very essence of things Japanese."
from Tuttle's "publisher's foreword" to Hearn editions Biography
Hearn was born on the Greek island of Lefkas, on June 27, 1850, son of an Anglo-Irish surgeon major in the British army and a Greek mother. After his parents' divorce when he was six, he was brought up by a great-aunt in Dublin, Ireland. He lost the sight in his left eye at the age of 16, and soon after, his father died. A year later, due to his great-aunt's bankruptcy, he was forced to withdraw from school. At the age of nineteen he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where five years later he became a newspaper reporter. In 1877 Hearn went to New Orleans to write a series of articles, and remained there for ten years. Having achieved some success with his literary translations and other works, he was hired by Harper Publishing Co.

This list was compiled primarily from dealer offerings and descriptions on the WWW ( Links ), the extensive Hearn catalog of Jerrold G. Stanoff's Rare Oriental Book Company , catalogs of the holdings of various university libraries, especially Louisiana State University and Cincinnatti, and major public libraries. It is therefore a collation of lists rather than a first-hand description of the items themselves, and so is subject to the various inaccuracies and errors of "heresay." It is presented here in an effort to provide detailed on-line descriptions of (English language) works by and about Hearn in a convenient form, for others who share this interest. Corrections, suggestions, and comments are solicited.
