A wise traveler never despises his own country. William Hazlitt Anyone who has passed through the regular gradations of classical education, and is not made a fool by it, may consider himself as having had a very narrow escape. William Hazlitt As is our confidence, so is our capacity. William Hazlitt Belief is with them mechanical, voluntary: they believe what they are paid for - they swear to that which turns to account. Do you suppose, that after years spent in this manner, they have any feeling left answering to the difference between truth and falsehood? by Joseph Epstein I n The Birth of the Modern H Romantic Cruxes W Reflections on the French Revolution . In politics, people of that day, as we should say today, played hardball. T he adolescent Hazlitt must have been a bit of a prig, moral-political division, so passionate, so full of politics was he, like those children who have been reading The Nation or The New Republic Tom Jones The Robbers . Even as a boy he was used to reasoning things out on his own. He had considerable powers of reflection, and would go off by himself and think things through. An opinion once taken on he seldom deserted. What Hazlitt did desert, not long after his entrance at New College, was the notion of following his father into the Unitarian ministry. For one thing, the world at large had great allure for him. For another, though Hazlitt would always remain respectful of the religion of his father, he was too set in his own difficult ways ever to hope to find and keep a living as a minister. He must early have sensed the oddity of his own personality. The man who would one day be known as one of the great practitioners of the essay was not, for example, able to write assigned essays in school; writing was already too important for him to expend it upon trivial classroom work. He lived with his father or sometimes with his older brother John, a painter of miniatures. Owing to a family connection, he knew William Godwin, author of

William Hazlitt
Profile
Essayist and critic; born at Maidstone the son of a minister and spent several years of his early life with his parents in America. A few months after their return to England in 1787 his father was appointed minister of the chapel in Noble Street, Wem , in Shropshire and William spent the rest of his childhood and youth here. His home, now called Hazlitt House, still stands in Noble Street as a private dwelling. He was educated at private schools and often accompanied his mother and sister to gatherings of ladies in and around Wem, part of the social and pastoral work expected of a minister's family. William was a great admirer of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and when the poet, about to become a minister himself, preached a probationary sermon at the Unitarian Church in Shrewsbury he walked all the way there in freezing weather to hear him. Hazlitt was bitterly disappointed when Coleridge received an annuity from Josiah Wedgwood, which enabled him to pursue a literary career, for this allowed him to leave Shrewsbury and prevented Hazlitt from making what he had hoped would be a close friendship. Hazlitt at this time was around nineteen years of age and of course, embarking on a literary career himself, was soon to become a friend of the Romantic poets. Among his own best works are Characters of Shakespeare's plays Lectures on the English poets (1818-19) and The spirit of the age From

We do not see nature with our eyes, but with our understandings and our hearts. Great thoughts reduced to practice become great acts. Simplicity of character is the natural result of profound thought. We are very much what others think of us. The reception our observations meet with gives us courage to proceed, or damps our efforts.

A RADICAL CRITIC'S VIEW OF HIS TIMES

20 May - 2 November
Room 16
William Hazlitt
by William Bewick, 1825 William Hazlitt (1778-1830) was the leading journalist, essayist and critic of the early nineteenth century. At the end of 1824 he published The Spirit of the Age, a volume of prose portraits of his most famous contemporaries. Far from celebrating their achievements, Hazlitt unleashed an opinionated attack on the vanity and hypocrisy of his times. This exhibition draws on the Gallery's collection of works on paper to illustrate and consider Hazlitt's critical portrait of the decades following the French Revolution.

The Selected Writings of William Hazlitt
The Pickering Masters 9 Volume Set Editor: Duncan Wu
Consulting Editors: David Bromwich Stanley Jones Roy Park and Tom Paulin - with an introduction by Tom Paulin While acknowledging the scope of P P Howe's Centenary Edition of Hazlitt's complete works, Duncan Wu is swift to demonstrate the difference in his approach and use of copy texts. Howe took as copy text a set by Waller and Glover published 1902 6, thus perpetuating the minor errors and editorial idiosyncrasies of the earlier edition.
Duncan Wu, Introduction to the edition The new edition takes all copy texts from early printed sources, collated with lifetime editions and manuscripts. We do not claim to supersede Howe, but wish to complement, and supplement, him. The new edition thus succeeds in its aim of providing today's Hazlitt scholars with a selection of highly accurate resource texts, further enhanced by editorial matter from eminent academics. The set is fit to stand alone as a primary resource in any library which does not have an older Hazlitt edition, and also has a place beside Howe as an authoritative, up-to-date collection, indispensable to modern research.
