[HAZLITT, William]. A Reply to the Essay on Population, by the Rev. T. R. Malthus. In a Series of Letters. To which are added, Extracts from the Essay; with Notes. London, Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1807. 8vo, pp. iv, [3]-378; a very nice copy, bound without the publisher's catalogue in contemporary half calf, flat spine stamped and lettered gilt, joints and corners rubbed, a few cracks to spine. Rare first edition, with C8 cancelled (i.e. removed) and gathering D reduced to four leaves as usual. 'Hazlitt's spirited Reply to Malthus consists of five Letters, the last of which is much the longest. The first three shorter Letters had been published on March 14 and May 16, 23, 1807, in Cobbett's Political Register and the rest of the material was added in the book, which was announced for publication in the Edinburgh Review for October 1807' (Keynes). It has been said of Hazlitt that 'he is almost certainly responsible for much ... misunderstanding not only of Malthus, but of his reputation' (Patricia James, Population Malthus, p. 349). Hazlitt's criticism of Malthus, however, was part of a much larger reaction, led by Southey, Coleridge and Godwin. Unlike those who attacked Malthus because they believed his proposals were contrary to the commandment to be fruitful and multiply, these objectors resented the implication that, in Southey's words, 'lust and hunger are alike passions of physical necessity'. Hazlitt also presents the view that the increase of population is not 'like a stone hanging suspended over a precipice, which if it once loses its balance will be hurled furiously down, rolling and bounding ... till it reaches the bottom, but like a balance suspended by a check-weight, where you cannot increase the pressure on one side without increasing the resistance proportionably on the other' (p. 116).

On Familiar Style Argument, again, is the death of conversation, if carried on in a spirit of hostility: but discussion is a pleasant and profitable thing, where you advance and defend your opinions as far as you can, and admit the truth of what is objected against them with equal impartiality.
On the Conversation of Authors An honest man speaks the truth, though it may give offence; a vain man, in order that it may.
Characteristics Poetry is the universal language which the heart holds with nature and itself. He who has a contempt for poetry, cannot have much respect for himself, or for anything else.
Lectures on the English Poets A nickname is the heaviest stone that the devil can throw at a man. It is a bugbear to the imagination, and, though we do not believe in it, it still haunts our apprehensions.

Page numbers are given in the web text, in square brackets, at the start of each page. This edition was reprinted from Stereotype Plates from the 1869 edition, which itself collated all Shakespearean quotations "with the late Mr. Dyce's revised and final text of 1868. In all the former editions these quotations were corrupt beyond measure. A few Notes have also been added". http://shakespearean.org.uk for more details.

    **HAMLET**
This is that Hamlet the Dane whom we read of in our youth, and whom we may be said almost to remember in our after years; he who made that famous soliloquy on life, who gave the advice to the players, who thought "this goodly frame, the earth," a sterile promontory, and "this brave o'er-hanging firmament, the air, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire," "a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours;" whom "man delighted not, nor woman neither;" he who talked with the grave-diggers, and moralised on Yorrick's skull; the school-fellow of Rosencraus and Guildenstern at Wittenburg; the friend of Horatio; the lover of Ophelia; he that was mad and sent to England; the slow avenger of his father's death; who lived at the court of Horwendillus five hundred years before we were born, but all whose thoughts we seem to know as well as we do our own, because we have read them in Shakespear.

    Acting and Actors
W e must overact our part in some measure, in order to produce any effect at all.
    Action
T he more we do, the more we can do; the more busy we are, the more leisure we have.
    Appearance
F irst impressions are often the truest, as we find (not infrequently) to our cost, when we have been wheedled out of them by plausible professions or studied actions. A man's look is the work of years; it is stamped on his countenance by the events of his whole life, nay, more, by the hand of nature, and it is not to be got rid of easily.
    Candor
T here is an unseemly exposure of the mind, as well as of the body.

    William Hazlitt
    Quotations
The true barbarian is he who thinks everything barbarous but his own tastes and prejudices. A grave blockhead should always go about with a lively onethey shew one another off to the best advantage. When a thing ceases to be a subject of controversy, it ceases to be a subject of interest. Envy among other ingredients has a mixture of the love of justice in it. We are more angry at undeserved than at deserved good-fortune. One shining quality lends a lustre to another, or hides some glaring defect. Our friends are generally ready to do everything for us, except the very thing we wish them to do. We are not hypocrites in our sleep.
