Mary Hays
I sought earnestly for the privilege of addressing you on paper. My mind seemed to overflow with a thousand sentiments, that I had not the courage to express in words; but now, when the period is arrived, that I can take up my pen, unawed by your penetrating glance, unchecked by your poignant reply, and pour out my spirit before you, I feel as if its emotions were too wayward, too visionary, too contradictory, to merit your attention. I am perplexed with doubts; relieve the wanderings of my mind, solve the difficulties by which it is agitated, prepare me for the world which is before me. The prospect, no longer beaming with light, no longer glowing with a thousand vivid hues, is overspread with mists, which the mind's eye vainly attempts to penetrate. I would feel, again, the value of existence, the worth of rectitude, the certainty of truth, the blessing of hope! Ah! tell me not that the gay expectations of youth have been the meteors of fancy, the visions of a romantic and distempered imagination! If I must not live to realize them, I would not live at all.
from The Memoirs of Emma Courtney Ah! did he but know my tendernessthe desire of being beloved, of inspiring sympathy, is congenial to the human heartwhy do I blush and tremble at the mere idea? It is a false shame! It is a pernicious system of morals, which teaches us that hypocrisy can be virtue!

Mary Hays
Welcome to the Mary Hays Website
Mary Hays is remembered today primarily as the friend who introduced William Godwin to Mary Wollstonecraft. She was, however, an important intellectual figure in her own right who published polemical essays in the 1790s, and who wrote a number of sentimental novels, biographies, and histories. She was an ardent champion of women's rights and an advocate for better education and work opportunities for women. Two of most interesting novels of the 1790s which are available to modern readers are: Memoirs of Emma Courtney and The Victim of Prejudice Hays was a notable figure in the literary circles of London in the 1790s, and was known to writers like Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Thomas Holcroft, William Blake, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Elizabeth Inchbald, and Helen Maria Williams. Her life and philosophy were caricatured in Elizabeth Hamilton's Memoirs of Modern Philosophers (1800). Hays was also featured as a character in Charles Lloyd's anti-Jacobin, anti-Coleridge novel, Edmund Oliver More about Hays: Powered by counter.bloke.com

Valley Forge FAQs
Q. Can you tell me any thing about Molly Ludwig Hayes and if she had any responsibilities at Valley Forge or did she just follow her husband there for support. It is hard to find any information on Molly before the Battle of Monmouth.
Robin Mcbroom, Lancaster, Ohio
A. If you are using the Internet as your resource, you can find a few sites using the subject of Mary Hays/ Mary Ludwig Hayes/ Mary Ludwig McCauley and Molly Pitcher. "Molly Pitcher" was a nickname for women who carried water to the troops during the war. Here is a little background on Mary that I can share: Born in 1754, Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley was the daughter of a New Jersey dairy farmer. At the age of 13, she went to work as a domestic/servant. During the same year still at 13 she married a man by the name of William Hays (a barber). When the Revolutionary War began, William enlisted and became a gunner in the Pennsylvania Artillery. Mary eventually joined her husband as a campfollower during the Philadelphia Campaign (1777-1778) in New Jersey eventually wintering with the Army at Valley Forge. We all have come to know her as "Molly Pitcher." She gained this title later on at the Battle of Monmouth. The only contemporary witness to the scene in June of 1778 describes the scene of the husband and wife Mary and William working together: "A woman whose husband belonged to the artillery and who was then attached to a piece in the engagement, attended with her husband at the piece the whole time. While in the act of reaching a cartridge and having one of her feet as far before the other as she could stemp, a cannon shot from the enemey passed directly between her legs without doing any other damage than carrying away all the lower part of her petticoat. Looking at it with apparent unconcern, she observed that it was lucky it did not pass a little higher, for in that case it might have carried away something else, and continued her occupation."

The Story of Molly Pitcher An Artillery wife, Mary Hays McCauly (better known as Molly Pitcher) shared the rigors of Valley Forge with her husband, William Hays. Her actions during the battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778 became legendary. That day at Monmouth was as hot as Valley Forge was cold. Someone had to cool the hot guns and bathe parched throats with water.
For her heroic role, General Washington himself issued her a warrant as a noncommissioned officer. Thereafter, she was widely hailed as "Sergeant Molly." A flagstaff and cannon stand at her gravesite at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. A sculpture on the battle monument commemorates her courageous deed.
