Elizabeth Haydon first began writing in the fourth grade. Writing a play was one option in a history assignment so, along with a couple of friends, she put on a play she had written which was called The Clue in the Diary. Writing fiction became a dream at that point. She took courses in college, but didn't believe she would be able to make a living from it.
She had read C S Lewis as a young child, J R R Tolkien as an older one, and some fantasy in college, but had lost touch with the field after that. She was working in educational publishing in 1994 when she met up with an editorial friend and mentor in New Orleans at the American Library Association conference. He asked her to write for him a fantasy that might cross over to other genres and contain some of their shared mutual interests: medieval music, history, anthropology, and herbalism among others. Since they had been drinking Dixie Blackened Voodoos, she was initially hesitant to take on the project, worried that he might have been a bit tipsy when he suggested it. But when it became clear he really wanted her to do it, The Symphony of Ages was born.

Requiem for the Sun is the standalone sequel to the USA Today-bestselling Rhapsody trilogy (Rhapsody , Prophecy , and Destiny ). This novel will please fans of Elizabeth Haydon's high-fantasy series, but it may confuse newcomers because numerous characters from the trilogy return, and most are introduced in the book's early pages. In the peace following the events of the trilogy, the singer Rhapsody believes she and her husband, the part-dragon Lord Cymrian, can at last start a family. Meanwhile, the assassin-king Achmed seeks to rebuild Canrif, his mountain capital. Then Lord Cymrian rejects Rhapsody's heart's desire; the giant Sergeant-Major Grunthor hears the earth itself screaming; the Dowager Empress of Sorbold, a realm of deep magic, dies under suspicious circumstances; and a powerful unknown enemy, as ancient and youthful as Rhapsody, seeks stealthily to steal her for himself. Haydon brings Rhapsody, heroine of one successful trilogy, back for another three-volume high-fantasy adventure, along with Achmed the assassin-king and Grunthor the seven-foot Bolg sergeant-major. The trio's exploits aren't as tightly interwoven as in the first trilogy because Rhapsody is now, three years after the end of

Elizabeth Haydon Interview (Mar 2000) Q: How do you explain the success of Rhapsody?
A: Hmmm. I guess I attribute whatever success Rhapsody has had to three things. First, the kindness of the readers; fantasy fans are a communicative and enthusiastic audience, and any book benefits most from good word of mouth. I think I have been fortunate enough to experience some of that. Next, the support of a visionary publisher and editor; no one at Tor ever said, "There aren't enough/there are too many battle scenes," or "Where are the spells?" They encouraged me to let the story develop as it needed to, however unorthodox it may be. Third, I think people enjoy the characters, which are not really the traditional hero types-in fact, at least two of the main characters are in many ways bad guys.
Q: Can you give us a sneak preview into your next novel, Prophecy?
A: Sure. Unlike Rhapsody, which had a fairly singular point of view and followed the main protagonists around all the time, Prophecy splits that point of view into two fronts-the overland journey undertaken by Rhapsody, with Ashe as her guide, to find the dragon Elynsynos, and the discoveries of ancient secrets made by Achmed and Grunthor back home in the mountainous lair of Ylorc. You will find more hints as to the identity of the F'dor, the hidden demon, and learn things about people you thought you knew that may change your mind about them. You will discover what the House of Remembrance was being used for. You will see much more of the world. It's creepier.

Rhapsody

Rhapsody by Elizabeth Haydon is the first book in an amzing series set in a world of immense fantasy, lore, and magic. Following Rhapsody, Achmed, and Grunthor as they start out by literally bumping into each other and end up in an inseperable friendship that spans contintents and centuries makes for a complete engrossing read.
Elizabeth Haydon makes the unbelievable, believble with a complex system of lore and magic, and most importantly, wonderful characters that are loyal to each other and at time, downright hilarious.
Submitted by Guiness (18. May 2003) Submitted by Danielle (4. Apr 2003) I'm only 13 years old and I haven't had much experience with books yet, but I just loved reading Rhapsody. At first, I was a bit intimidated by the size of the book because I usually get bored of it before I finish, but as soon as I read the first page I couldn't put it down. It is the best book I have ever read and probably will ever read. I could only find one flaw in this book, and that was the way she went on about Rhapsody's looks. Those details are for a man's book so he can dream at night...you understand. I am now halfway through the second book in the series and I'm enjoying it more than the first! I can't wait until I get to read the last two! I have nothing to complain about with this book except the unnecessary detail to Rhapsody's looks.

Interview with Elizabeth Haydon
Interview by Ciara Grey
Fiction Factor - Do you have a literary agent to represent you?
Elizabeth Haydon - Yes. My agent is Richard Curtis.
FF - Would you recommend that new authors try to find an agent first or approach the publishers directly.
EH - I tend to recommend the agent route, because an agent can give you advice about what needs to be fixed before an editor sees it. Also there are a lot of editors in genre fiction who only rarely even look at stuff that comes in over the transom. But if you can't find one to take you on at first, cultivate an editor and go directly to him/her. Once you're published, it's easier to find an agent to agree to represent you in future sales.
FF - What precautions should an author take when signing a contract with an agent and/or publisher?
EH - Agents should never charge a reading fee, and if they are members of the AAR (Association of Authors Representatives) they should follow accepted practices with their contracts. Don't get into a situation where your agent is charging you "editing" fees, and make sure that you have a time limit on the prospective part of your relationship. Ideally it should contain a clause that says, for example, if the agent has not procured a sale for you within one year's time, the agreement is void.

An Interview with Elizabeth Haydon Remember, all profits from the sale of PROPHECY go to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation NEWSFLASH : "Destiny: Child of the Sky," will be released August 11, 2001. Cover art by Artist Royo is available on Elizabeth Haydon's website Read an exclusive excerpt from "Destiny: Child of the Sky." Read an excerpt from "Prophecy: Child of Earth." Now on to the interview. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing a major new talent in the realm of fantasy fiction. In her debut novel "Rhapsody: Child of Blood," Elizabeth Haydon created a marvelously detailed world populated with exotic yet temptingly interesting characters. Her second novel, "Prophecy: Child of Earth" is due to be released soon. Epic : In RHAPSODY: Child of Blood you introduced us to three wonderful characters who get tossed across time escaping the fiery destruction of their homeland. Can you give us a hint of what you have in store for us in the second book, PROPHECY: Child of Earth? Elizabeth Haydon : A much faster, farther-reaching story. While RHAPSODY was told by and large from a single viewpoint, following the three main characters around as a unit, in PROPHECY the story splits onto two fronts, alternating between the overland journey of Rhapsody and Ashe as they seek the fierce, ancient dragon Elynsynos, and the startling discoveries uncovered by Achmed, Grunthor and Jo back in the Bolglands. The mystery of the hidden demon, the F'dor, unfolds; many questions asked in the first volume are answered. Secrets will be revealed. You may learn things about characters you've come to know that changes your opinion of them. You'll get to see more of the continent and learn its unique histories. You will meet a number of mythic beings in all their cantankerous and quirky glory. And you will see power come into its own.

An Excerpt from the upcoming book,
"Destiny: Child of the Sky"
by Elizabeth Haydon Haguefort, province of Navarne
The winter carnival was a tradition in Navarne, held in honor of the solstice and coinciding with holy days in both the Patriarchal religion of Sepulvarta and the order of the Filids, the nature priests of the Circle in Gwynwood. The duke of the province, Lord Stephen Navarne, was an adherent to the former but a well-loved friend of the latter, and so at his example the populace of the province, divided almost equally between the two faiths, put aside religious acrimony and differences to make merry at the coming of snow. In earlier years the festival had sprawled as far as the eye could see over the wide rolling hills of Narvarne. Haguefort, Lord Stephen's keep and the site of the celebration, was located atop a gentle rise at the western forest's edge with a panoramic vista of farms and meadowlands stretching to the horizon in all three other directions. Some of the other Orlandan provinces, notably Canderre, Bethany, Avonderre and even far-away Bethe Corbair, had long since given up their own solstice celebrations in order to combine their festivities with Lord Stephen's revels, largely because Stephen was unsurpassed as a merrymaker.
