Classroom Issues and Strategies
It's important to get students to fully appreciate Hayden's effects of sound, image, and atmosphere. For better appreciation of the poems' aural qualities, have students read such selections as "Summertime and the Living" and "Mourning Poem for the Queen of Sunday" out loud. Discuss a condensed narrative poem such as "Tour 5" as a short story. This should permit a discussion of the evolving point of view of the travelers and the evolving psychological quality of the imagery. Point out also Hayden's control of voice. "Mourning Poem," for example, is spoken in the idiom of the black church, as if by a chorus of mourners; and if one reads the final lines to mean that the congregation did suspect her of misbehaving, then the poem becomes a masterpiece of wryness and irony. Students are interested in questions like the following: 1. Is it possible to be both an ethnic and a universal (or liberal humanist) writer? What constitutes universality? What constitutes successful treatment of ethnic material? 2. Can a writer from a minority group write for a general educated audience without giving up in resonance what is gained in breadth of audience and reference?

Biography
Robert Hayden
Introduction Early Years Literary Career Last Years and Legacy
Introduction
For many years, Robert Hayden occupied a difficult and ambiguous position in American poetry. Marginalized by the literary mainstream at the start of his career as a "Negro poet," he was considered not black enough by more militant writers and theorists in the 1960s. Such issues of literary identity had an upsetting parallel, the full extent of which he would only belatedly discover, in his personal life. Throughout decades of neglect and scorn, he clung steadfastly to his artistic and human values, producing a body of work whose artistry and emotional richness placed him at or very near the front rank of an especially talented generation of American poets.
Early Years
Until Hayden's late teens, his neighborhood was racially mixed, and his playmates included Jewish and Italian children ("The Rabbi" and "Elegies for Paradise Valley" are among several fine poems to emerge from this aspect of his experience). His extreme nearsightedness limited the scope of his physical activities, and was also responsible for his being sent to Northern High School, a largely white institution. Having written and made up stories from a very early age, he discovered modern poetry at the age of sixteen, and refocused his literary energies in that direction. He graduated from high school in 1930, the year that America began to feel the full effects of the stock market crash of the previous October. He worked a number of odd jobs, including typing, clerking in a grocery store, and even issuing policy slips for an illegal numbers game. Meanwhile, he continued to take postgraduate classes.

Blue jays scream in the trees.
Winter's late snow begins to fall.
All nature seems to grieve for you.
Yet I know it is only I,
I and others who also disbelieve
the feared and all-too-sudden change
that has left us with nothing but
delayed and swirling gusts of winter snow.
And even they will soon be gone.

Robert Hayden's Epic of Community. (African American poet)
Author/s: Benjamin Friedlander
Issue: Fall, 1998 As early as 1941 Robert Hayden prepared himself for the task of writing a "black-skinned epic," an ambition he formed after reading Stephen Vincent Benet's long Civil War poem, John Brown's Body. Interviewed in 1972, Hayden spoke of this ambition in the following manner: I've always been interested in Afro-American history, and when I was a young poet, since I knew that our history had been misrepresented, I wanted to contribute toward an understanding of what our past had really been like. I set out to correct the misconceptions and to destroy some of the stereotypes and cliches which surrounded Negro history. (Collected Prose 162) Speaking here of "our" history and "our" past, Hayden shifts easily from the first person singular to first person plural, a reminder that all historical epics are first of all affirmations of community. Yet readers familiar with Hayden's concerns, with the care of his writing, will hear in this particular affirmation a quiet but important ambiguity. For while he speaks in this passage in the first person plural, it is not entirely clear whether his "our" is meant to encompass all of America, or only the Negro portion. As I shall try to show, the possibility afforded by this ambiguity is a major theme of Hayden's later work. Over the years Hayden's planned epichis ambitious corrective to cliches and misconceptions about black historywould assume many forms, reaching temporary completion as a collection of poems called The Black Spear, "a mixture of styles, idioms" submitted to various publishers but eventually withdrawn (Collected Prose 187). Asked about the genesis of this collection, Hayden recalled:

University of Pittsburgh In October 1998 NATO faced a dilemma while its member states were threatening air attacks against Yugoslavia in response to Yugoslav attacks on Kosovo Albanians, they also recognized that Kosovo is clearly within the sovereign territory of Yugoslavia. On March 24, 1999, NATO resolved this dilemma by committing the first unprovoked, opposed military aggression in Europe since Soviet troops invaded Hungary in 1956. The attacks were clearly contrary to international law and to the UN charter. The aggression took the form of intensive bombing of the Yugoslav "infrastructure," the first such massive use of air attacks in Europe since World War II. As of May 23, after 60 days of bombing, NATO had mounted 7,000 air attacks on more than 500 targets, with munitions alone costing about $20 million per day. While Yugoslav military casualty figures in the first 60 days of the attacks were estimated at being "in the hundreds," NATO had in that time killed as many as 1500 civilians. Further, in the third week of May NATO began to commit textbook war crimes, aimed at depriving the civilian population of Serbia of water and electrical power, and explicitly not aimed at military forces in Kosovo.

An examination of the poetry of Robert Hayden in Light of the Revelation of Bahá'u'lláh
    by Duane L. Herrmann , U.S.A.
Robert Hayden was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1913. His early life was marked by the poverty and deprivation common to any non-white person growing up in the United States in the 1920s and 30s.
Not only was day-to-day living an economic and emotional struggle for the family, but Hayden's own poor eyesight kept him from participating in neighborhood activities with the other children. It was an added agony to his life. He sought refuge in the world of books. He taught himself to read before entering public school and kept on reading. Hayden developed a passion for learning which was encouraged by his natural mother when they had contact. The foster family she placed him with did not share this passion and did not even understand it. The differences between these two attitudes were an additional tension in Hayden's childhood. Eventually Ma and Pa Hayden did accept the literary yearnings of the young Robert. Later in life the failure of the Hayden's to formally and legally adopt him also caused Robert Hayden anguish.
When he applied for a passport no record could be found of the birth of Robert Earl Hayden. Instead records indicated that his legal name was Asa Earl Sheffey, the name his natural mother had given him. She divorced Hayden's father shortly before he was born, and placed him in the care of the Haydens to raise while she went to work. The pull on his life between the Haydens, his natural mother (whom he saw frequently) and his natural father (whom he saw only a few times) was a major force on Robert Hayden's life.

    4 July 1996
Dear Harryette, the sallow vendeuse of prepared tarnishes and jokes of nacre and ormolu, what but those gleamings, oldrose graces, manners like scented gloves? Contrived ghosts rapped to metronome clack of lavalieres. In fact, however, this "baroque" mode (to use Hayden's term) is just one element in his own "richly human" presence, and even after he recalls coming to himself amid those eldritch voices, he incorporates their lovely grotesqueries in his concluding dedication to an old friend and academic: And therefore this is not only a ballad of remembrance for the down-South arcane city with death in its jaws like gold teeth and archaic cusswords; not only a token for the troubled generous friends held in the fists of that schizoid city like flowers, but also, Mark Van Doren, a poem of remembrance, a gift, a souvenir for you. There's no question, it seems to me, that he revels in the densities, the crossroads, sonic and otherwise, of "arcane city ... archaic cusswords" and "the fists of that schizoid city like flowers" and that the pleasure he takes is in large part responsible for his "true voice."

and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.
I'd wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he'd call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Born Asa Bundey Sheffey, Robert Hayden spent his childhood in a Detroit ghetto nicknamed 'Paradise Valley,' shuffled between his parents home and that of a foster family living next door. Childhood events would result in times of depression he would call 'my dark nights of the soul'. A nearsighted boy, he was often ostracised by his peers and was excluded from many physical pursuits. Reading -however- occupied a great deal of his time.
Hayden finished high school in 1932 and through a scholarship attended Detroit City College. Post graduation, he worked for the Federal Writer's Project, researching black history and folk culture. In 1941, he enrolled in a master's English Literature program at the University of Michigan, where he studied under W.H.Auden - who would become a guide in the development of his writing. After finishing the degree in 1942, he taught for several years at Michigan before transferring to Fisk University; in 1969, he would return to Michigan to complete his teaching career.

An interview with Professor Robert Hayden
By James Brookfield 17 May 1999 This chilling and shocking allegation has been repeated by US and NATO spokesmen from the first week of the bombing, although with no credible supporting evidence. Revived after each new atrocity in the air war, this claim has been parroted uncritically in the American media. If it is shown one day to be false, virtually the whole of official Washington will have to answer for it. To establish whether these charges have any credibility, the World Socialist Web Site recently interviewed a leading US expert on the former Yugoslavia, Professor Robert Hayden, director of the Russian and East European Studies Department at the University of Pittsburgh, who is sharply critical both of the American-NATO air war and the American media coverage of the crisis. Hayden and others familiar with the history and politics of the Balkans were interviewed by the Boston Globe Globe Professor Hayden elaborated this comment in his discussion with WSWS All Things Considered . In the space of half an hour they had two stories. The first reported great numbers of missing Kosovar Albanian men. The second was an interview with a KLA commander who said that the KLA was conscripting the men. But no connection was made between the two stories!

Born Asa Bundy Sheffey in Detroit, Michigan, Hayden grew up in a poor, racially mixed neighborhood. Because his parents were divorced when he was quite young, his mother left him with neighbors, William and Sue Ellen Hayden, who gave him their name and raised him. His mother’s periodic reappearances coupled with the jealousy of his foster mother made him “a divided person,” and his art includes images of warring forces within the self.
Nearsighted and introverted, Hayden spent many hours reading and writing, and published his first poem at eighteen.
