Hauptmann's dramatic genius is incontestable, but he has never seemed able to settle on any one form as best suited to express his dramatic intentions. THE WEAVERS , for example, a play that caused considerable stir on its presentation in 1892, is most unusual in that it is concerned with a whole community and has neither hero nor heroine. June 6, 1946, Agnetendorf, Ger.), German playwright, poet, and novelist who was a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912. Hauptmann was born in a then-fashionable Silesian resort town, where his father owned the main hotel. He studied sculpture from 1880 to 1882 at the Breslau Art Institute. He then studied science and philosophy at the university in Jena (1882-83), worked as a sculptor in Rome (1883-84), and studied further in Berlin (1884-85). It was at this time that he decided to make his career as a poet and dramatist. Having married the well-to-do Marie Thienemann in 1885, Hauptmann settled down in Erkner, a rural suburb of Berlin, dabbling in political, theological, and literary studies and associating with a group of scientists, philosophers, and avant-garde writers who were interested in naturalist and socialist ideas. In October 1889 the performance of Hauptmann's social drama Vor Sonnenaufgang Before Dawn ) made him famous overnight, though it shocked the theatregoing public. This starkly realistic tragedy, dealing with contemporary social problems, signaled the end of the rhetorical and highly stylized German drama of the 19th century. Fortunately, my Breslau school period did not crush me, but it left scars from which I only slowly recovered. I should have perished if there had not been a way out. I went to the country and began to study agriculture. The tortures of school, begun in 1874, ended in 1878. But agriculture remained an episode. Once in solitude I reamed to stand on my own feet and have my own thoughts. I grew conscious of myself, my value, and my rights. In this way I gained independence, firmness, and a freedom of intellect that I still enjoy today. Hungry for culture, I resumed to Breslau where I spent a second, happier period. I attended the art academy, did sculpturing, learned what youth, hope, and beauty are, the value of friends, masters, and teachers. I drew, sculptured, drank, wrote poems, made plans, and built castles in Spain. In this mood I exchanged the art academy of Breslau for the University of Jena in Thuringia. November 1862 wurde Gerhart Hauptmann zu Ober-Salzbrunn (Niederschlesien) im Hotel "Zur Krone" geboren. S eit 1901 lebte Hauptmann mit seiner zweiten Frau, Margarete Marschalk, einer Schauspielerin und Geigerin in Agnetendorf, Kloster auf Hiddensee, in der Südschweiz und an der Riviera. 1907 machte er eine Reise nach Griechenland, die für seine Dichtung von Bedeutung war. 1932 machte er seine zweite Reise nach Amerika, wo er als Repräsentant der deutschen Dichtung gefeiert wurde. Er gewann zahlreiche Ehrungen, einschließlich Ehrendoktor der Universität Oxford 1907 und Nobelpreis für Literatur 1912. Am 6. Juni 1946 starb er in seinem Haus in Agnetendorf.
