Holly Holets The Land Afton Historical Society Press has released its third annual Christmas reader, Underground Christmas by Jon Hassler. Underground Christmas is the story of a man named Jay who is struggling with changes in his life, including a recent divorce and his son's suicide attempt. Nearing 50 and seeking stability, Jay accepts a teaching position at his former college. Jay has become terrified of change. With Christmas approaching and his friend Charlie's decision to leave the seminary just before ordination into the priesthood, Jay is on the edge of a breakdown. Underground Christmas reminds the reader that holiday miracles are not usually the sort of fairy tales, but of real life, that real Christmas miracles lie in our ability to accept, forgive and reestablish our relationships. Hassler is author of 11 novels, including

INTRODUCTION In her eightieth year, Agatha McGee is feeling her age, more tired and less a part of daily life in town. When an article in the local paper tells the whole town about her failing health, Agatha decides she's spent enough time in the house. During her attempts to return to society, a flood hits the Badbattle River, engulfing every house except hers. Staggerford needs Agatha like never before, and seven neighbors, friends, and former students seek refuge with Agatha for four days and nights. ABOUT JON HASSLER Jon Hassler is the author of eleven novels, two short-story collections, and two works of nonfiction. He is Regent's Professor Emeritus at St. John's University, Minnesota. He and his wife, Gretchen, divide their time between Melbourne Beach, Florida, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. AN INTERVIEW WITH JON HASSLER What made you want to return to Staggerford again?

THE STAGGERFORD FLOOD.
By Jon Hassler.
Viking, $24.95; 199 pp. DIE-HARD fans of Jon Hassler's Staggerford stories will welcome his latest, The Staggerford Flood. It's a brief tale that brings together beloved characters from several previous novels, ties up a few loose ends and introduces a new subplot or two. Problem is, there's a summing-up quality that will discourage newcomers. This isn't the best route into the little Minnesota town Hassler created 11 novels ago. The Staggerford Flood is Hassler's first book for Viking. The plot is a model of simplicity: The Badbattle River is on the rise, flooding is imminent, and it's left to retired schoolteacher and active busybody Agatha McGee to provide refuge for assorted friends and neighbors in her high and relatively dry home.

Because Agatha McGee's penmanship had become shaky with age, she relied on her younger friend Janet Meers to do her handwriting for her. "Janet, are you coming into town today?" she asked over the telephone. "I have some invitations I'd like you to copy out for me and address the envelopes." "Sure, what time?" "Before two. Lillian comes over at two." "I can come at eleven or one; take your pick." "Come at eleven; we'll have lunch." "Good, I'll bring sandwiches and soup." Agatha protested, but not enough, fortunately, to sway Janet.

Ballantine. $14. W hat is any artist but the dregs of his work?" the author William Gaddis said. I wish Jon Hassler had remembered that before publishing "My Staggerford Journal," the tearings from his diary he kept in 1975 when he took a sabbatical from his English professorship to write his first novel. While the book is only 100 pages long, there is very little that is of interest to anyone but fans of his work.
Those interested in the artistic process will find little here of interest. Hassler recounts the decisions underlying the writing of "Staggerford" in the fashion of a carpenter building a chair ("Coach Gibbon will talk about sports. Stella about the press box and her dentist. Imogene? Knowledge.").
The best parts of the book are things that have nothing to do with writing. He visits Emily Dickenson's home in New England, and spends three weeks in Great Britain and Ireland. He recounts a vacuous committee meeting at the community college where he taught. After a week writing alone, he goes out into the Minnesota snow seeking any kind of social connection. When the book is accepted by Atheneum, he worries that he doesn't know how to pronounce the name. But overall, the best part of Hassler is found in his novels.

NEWS RELEASE

SCREENPLAY READING OF JON HASSLER'S "SIMON'S NIGHT"
(Minneapolis) A screenplay based on the novel "Simon's Night" by Minnesota favorite son Jon Hassler will receive a staged reading January 27, at 7:30 pm, at the Crown Theaters in Block E, on Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. This is a free event and open to the public.
"Simon's Night" is the tale of retired English Professor Simon P. Shea, who has resigned himself to living out his days in an old folks home when a series of bizarre events and strange encounters propel him on a journey to regain his autonomy and independence. The New York Times Book Review said of the novel, "Jon Hassler's themes are mature and important - the tenacity of mind and love, the unforgivable waste of good brains and useful people simply because they are no longer young, the unarguable fact that there is truly no half-way station, like the Norman Home, between life and death."
The project was awarded a 2001 Minnesota Independent Film Fund Award to assist in its development. The film adaptation is by writer and Minnesota native Emil Kresl who has been mentored by screenwriter Barry Morrow (Rain Man) for this project. Two other Minnesota natives are set to direct and produce the project - award-winning director Ali Selim and veteran film and TV producer Kate Lehmann.

59. Ashgroveaudiobook.com - John Hassler
Maybe it s because jon hassler is a softspoken, almost shy fellow with none of the eccentric characteristics that mark our modern icons.
http://www.ashgroveaudiobook.com/grove/info_authors_hassler.html
How is it that an author whose work enjoys a word-of mouth cult status among English teachers, whose rich, uncluttered style earns rave reviews, whose novels and short stories are recommended by knowledgeable booksellers and librarians countrywide, who was named distinguished Minnesotan of the year 2000 how is it this man is not yet famous and his name familiar to the well-read everywhere? Maybe it's because Jon Hassler is a soft-spoken, almost shy fellow with none of the eccentric characteristics that mark our modern icons. Maybe it's because he writes about ordinary lives, often of the middle-aged or elderly, and renders his tales with deft clarity and splendid sympathy, but without the larger-than-life drama we've come to expect. editor Steven Anderson notes that Minnesota's most famous literary luminary, F. Scott Fitzgerald, once said, "American lives have no second acts," and that this observation was certainly true of Fitzgerald's own stories and lives. But Jon Hassler, the most prolific Minnesota writer working today, calls the general truth of that statement into question with his life and work. Hassler's writing is almost exclusively about second acts, second chances. And decidedly American second acts: The characters who people his novels are strong and likeable, but ordinary and oh-so-human. Hassler first published two young-adult novels before beginning what he calls his "serious" writing. "I think I always intended to do it [write serious novels], but it was something easy to put off as I was earning a living and raising a family. Maybe it was because I sensed the sort of commitment it would take. Once I began I've been working hard at it and have published 10 novels since then." His first novel, the soulful

  • you remind me of you
In this eloquent and moving poetic memoir, Corrigan recounts her descent into anorexia. In and out of hospitals and treatment facilities for several years, she was unconvinced that her life was worth sustaining despite the frantic efforts of her family and boyfriend. The author's prose poetry is interspersed with interviews between herself and an unnamed therapist. The unusual format sharpens each word, making readers savor and examine each poetic piece.
